I think his passion is incredible! this repertoire fits him well in a musical manner.but unfortunaly he givs a little to much to sta y healthy vocally. He sings in a bit heavy registration. But he is really a true artist anyway:)
Surprisingly I really enjoyed this rendition of Carreras. His voice does sound fresh, potent and clear, specially in his low and middle register. He could never really get to manage well or dominate technically his high register, and it shows including in this rendition, when his voice was clearly in it's prime.
The problems with his upper register are quite evident here already, but the voice was still quite fresh. Carreras had an amazing voice. Incredible passion.
Those who only know Carreras from the 3 Tenors can now see that prior to his tragic illness he was perfection. A compelling matinee idol, with poetic expression and the most thrilling tenor voice of his generation. These particular videos from "fabiantenor" are the best documentation of the Jose Carreras who was knocking New Yorkers on their uhh "ear" at the NYCO in the early 70s. If he and Sills were doing "Lucia", a lot of smart opera goers were taking a left turn at the fountain.
I'm sure you're right. He looks so young. His hair thinned out after the cancer treatments. 1984 was before that of course. I first heard him live in the seventies.
During 1974 - 1984 Carreras created his best legacy and that is exceptional!
Phrasing,musicality,drama is very attractive.

Carreras is simply a treasure. It seems so natural that Karajan treated him with special respect and almost paternal tenderness.

His illness I know didn't help! But his voice was deteriorating prior to that, sadly. I love him in his prime.
He sounded quite good at this concert.

Una combinación perfecta: maravillosa voz,
bella aria, caballero galante y educado,
gran calidad histríonica, seguridad en sí
mismo, juventud, elegancia, etc.
Muy probablemente el mejor Cheniér.
Felicidades fabiantenor!! Y gracias por compartir esta joya.
Viva carreras!!

Is this really 1984? I would have guessed 1974.

Jose Carreras is probably the best Andrea Chenier of the opera world and this aria is his "visit card"!
