As a young man who aspires to sing, I find this recording inspirational. I'm searching for a way to get "out of my head" and let my (still developing) technique work for me. This task is anything but easy with the great vocal demands of classical repertoire. This performance lets me know that what is difficult is still very achievable. A singer with heart heroically revealing it for the world to do as it may, and her technique allows her to do it with remarkable grace and precision. Brava!

Ewa Podles started her career as a mezzo, singing Rossini and other roles, and her voice naturally deepened as she grew older. I think there's a clip of her from the 80's on YouTube. For anyone who's confused, she is a true contralto with an unusual high extension, though I've heard the Swedish alto Anna Larsson sing close to her high range.  What everyone's aware of here is that she is a fearless singer who knows how to sing a trouser role with great skill & aplomb. Well done!

I think instead it will suffice to state the blatantly obvious: "Wow, she really sings the hell out of that aria, doesn't she!" A standing ovation is certainly in order here!

The Contralto voice returns!

For too long now the true Contralto voice has been out of fashion,many mezzos (who were truly contraltos) feared to sing in this register because opera managements and recording companies would not entertain such a voice.

Of course she is a phenomenon,you cannot shove her into one category,and just say "Contralto" her range is to great for that,she is a singer of great flexibility, intelligence and purity of voice.

May she continue to delight us.

she's good at negotiating vocal weight. she knows the right amount of vocal weight to use in the upper, middle and lower registers (if you notice, her singing in the lower register is more deliberate and her singing in the upper register is more released and spinning)

Ewa Podles was to have sung this role in San Francisco production of Ariodante. I just checked their website and discovered she sadly won't be there afterall. Very disappointing as I think she is incredible.
