For those asking why he did not use a field drum; this was written over 40 years ago. Back then a field drum was larger than the modern version, had catgut snares and it was tuned about half as tight as now.
When I saw the composer perform this, he was using a concert snare. In order to achieve the nuance of dynamics, I think the concert snare is a must. Playing on a rock hard modern field drum is pointless. You might as well play it on a practice pad...you'll get about the same response.
wow someone's in a bad mood! r u just here to rip everyone up?how many other people did u dig into that day?that's 2 so far...did u spend the day just trashing people on youtube?
No, I gave a legitimate criticism on this piece. And yes, you should buy the music of pieces you want to play - that way composers are able to stay in business and compose new literature. And no, I give plenty of positive comments, I'm sorry you saw my negative ones, but sometimes I feel I need to put forth an honest opinion whether it is good or bad, sometimes I don't feel the need to comment at all.
man all yall are noobs that wasnt that good he played it way too fast he should have played it on a marching snare cause then you could here what was wrong with it geeez noobs
Mitch Markovich intended this solo to be played that fast. Only "noobs" do not have the chops to play it at 132 (I think that is close to the initial bpm marked) It takes a great amount of chops to play it that fast, and even more to play it without the rebound of a marching drum head.
tempo at beginning was faster than the last section when they are supposed to be the same. also the ending section was a little weak with the accents in the rolls.
That is a tough solo to play. He did fine though his tempo slowed down and it got rough at the end when a little fatigue set in. Search Jay's snare solo to get another example of Tornado.
Not only did this guy get a 1 on his solo at state, but he's been in the all country concert band 6 years now. Obviously what he's doing works pretty damn well. By the way, you spelled "retarded" wrong.
omg thats the solo im gonna play?! f'in sweet haha

volume should be controlled through the fingers, NOT by playing the outside of the head.
danz2276 4 years ago
maybe he decided to take his chances that the drum police were not there and wanted to do it that way
justlooking3333 4 years ago 2
Maybe, but your own musical integrity may hear a shift in the tone of the drum.

danz2276 is right. If the music says to play on the edge then you play on the edge. but playing softer requires you to control your fingers

agreed good how it was played but wouldve been better on marching snare or something with less of the resonating sound
puttsoccer20 4 years ago

hmm, I'm playing this solo for Solo/Ensemble this year. I don't have it near that fast, but this video helped me see some of what I have to work on.
