Actually, it was a freak accident. Stingrays are usually generally harmless, at worst, the stinger will hurt like a SoB, but no real harm will occur. In this instance, the stingray just happened to strike at the right spot, at the exact angle necessary to go between the ribs and directly into his heart. It was a complete fluke, something that really shouldn't of happened.
