Hitch really didn't do very well at all here. He could have done better, but he isn't as intelligent as everyone says he is. Don't get me wrong, I like Hitch, but people make him out to be an astounding mind; he isn't. He is a better orator than a writer. If you read Hitch's writings aloud, he isn't nearly as intelligent as he is made out to be by fanboys. He is proof that if you get the right accent from the right school, you can say anything and it will sound far better than it actually is.
