  • The Lisbon Treaty is fantastic; it must now be put into practice.

  • The EU is a real benefit to the UK. 80% of our trade comes from Europe; to back out now would be to destroy our entire economy. Instead of walking away from the EU, we should embrace the Lisbon Treaty and work towards deeper integration with Europe. In the words of Winston Churchill, "we must build a kind of United States of Europe!"

  • "But the commissioners are appointed by national governments - one commissioner per member state."

Sorry, but this is wrong. The EU council appoints the head of the commission. He alone decides the members of the commmision, based on *suggestions* from member states. Also, the number of commissioners is reduced with the Lisbon Constitution, so not all states will have one.

And then there's the secret working groups that no one knows the details of...

  • Well, the "suggestions" are de facto appointments by member states. And following the 2008 referendum, the European Council pledged to keep the system where every member state has a commissioner.

The European Council is NOT the same as the EU Council.

The Treaty of Lisbon is strictly speaking not a constitution.

    NWO freak.

  • NO SIDE: Shinners, Ganley, Socialists, Coir, Eirigi, UKIP, Le Pen, BNP.

YES SIDE: all international chambers of commerce, most independent economists, 3 main political parties, IFA, IBEC, SIPTU, ICTU, most major trade unions, Pfizer, Ryanair, Intel, Microsoft.

    Who you going to trust?

  • I like the way this video is put together. A clever piece of work. In any event, the strong probability is that the Yes vote will triumph on October 2ns. Hopefully, we can then have a break from the rantings of Nigel Farage (at least until the European Parliament/Commission does something new to upset his sensitive little British soul).

  • dick roche you are ireland greatest hero

history will record you as a true son and saint of ireland

    just like pearse and connolly

please vote yes for jedi peace

    please see my page

    nunoquadros

  • if these are suppost to be facts where do they mention these issues in the treaty?can you give page numbers?but oh wait...THE TREATY IS UNREADABLE!!!!!!!what a joke!anyone with a shred of sense would vote no again!and il repeat AGAIN.Cant u people take no for an answer

  • The Irish Parliament decided to have a new referendum. I'm not one of them, so don't refer to me as "u people".

I CAN give you page numbers if you're specific about what you want. But you haven't tried opening any Lisbon PDF. Not even a guide. You could read the new White Paper PDF.

Lisbon isn't more complex than Nice, Maastricht or Amsterdam were. It's long and intricate because that limits the manouvering space for interpretation by the EU court, and to fulfill all member states' needs.

  • 5* and favorite.

  • well thats just great. so they will provide u with a symbolic "face of the EU" but wont actually tell us the names of the secretly choosen members who make up the EU council. its complete madness! the more i read about this lisbon treaty the more i cannot understand how its even gone this far already. well i was a no voter the 1st time around and i shall be again. almost all my friends and family are against it also. please god it will be a no result again come october

  • Are you ignorant or do you deliberately tell lies?

The Council of the European Union consists of national governments (not "secret members"). The European Council (the ones who will choose the President of the European Council) consists of heads of national governments.

  • the eu comission is made up of the heads of the national governments not the EU council.and please explain to me why the former MEP cathy sinnot stated that even she didnt know the names of the people behind the EU council?

  • I don't mean to patronise you, but the European Commission is completely separate from national governments. But the commissioners are appointed by national governments - one commissioner per member state. The European Council (consisting of heads of member states), the EU Council (national ministers) and the Commission are three separate institutions.

I'm not familiar with that quote. If you need to work out how EU institutions work, please spend two minutes reading Wikipedia. That helps.

  • We wan't the Lisbon treaty NOW!

  • Yes.. But it won't create a federal europe.

  • Yes... I have in fact read the treaty and it doesn't make Europe into a federation, but it does make it better!

  • It is so good to see some pro european videos on here, we need more of these if we are to reach into the young vote for LIsbon 2. I am Irish and while things maybe looking up, the last time the Yes side was also ahead and we saw what happened. Expect a pretty rough debate. So please more pro EU videos that highlight the facts and less of the ignorant left wing brigade that...finally Declan Ganley will come out of retirement for Lisbon 2! Do not be fooled!. We must vote Yes!

  • don't worry about us in Ireland recent polls has lisbon approval at 57% with dissaproval at around 25% when the don't knows, won't vote tallies are included and to top it all off the leader of the No campaign in Ireland Declan Ganley didn't get elected as an MEP. Things are looking up

  • Yes the opinion polls are uplifting, but the second Lisbon debate hasn't really started yet, and if people don't know what the treaty is actually about, spindoctors will decide the focus of the debate. And with both camps having 50% coverage, it's not a matter of course that Micheál Martin will win the argument against Mary Lou McDonald. I'm crossing my fingers :P

  • But of course the absence of Declan Ganley's shockingly cynical scaremongering will make it easier this time around.

  • propaganda? you anti-EU guys seem to be in a prepetual state of paranoia, you must live in a frightening world. Believe it or not you're not being witty when you call it the EUSSR. Have you ever read the paper that carried out the poll (Irish Times) as you clearly seem to know about some secret dealings between the independent press and the irish government (sarcasm). Why wouldn't the Irish change their minds on the treaty we have one of the the highest approval of the EU in the EU

  • very good video. its good to see more pro-europeans on youtube, i'm getting sick of the constant barrage from the no to lisbon side

  • It's such a silly thing. The EU's future (including enlargement and possibly Ireland's and Britain's membership) now completely depends on how well Irish PRO-EU people know Lisbon. The presence of UKIP fanatics on YouTube doesn't really matter.

All you people from Ireland therefore have an incredible power to change Europe's future. It would certainly make a difference if you sent basic facts about Lisbon to everyone you know, via email and youtube. If you like this video, you could use it.

  • Ireland has held repeated referendums several times. Peoples' opinions aren't static in a democracy.

  • You have no reason to worry about democracy, unless you think the referendum will be rigged.

Shouldn't the Irish people be allowed to change their minds e.g. on the issue of abortion? The Lisbon Treaty won't be passed if it's not supported by a majority of the people. Just relax if you believe the majority is anti-Lisbon.

The Lisbon deal is different now.

"FOUNDATION FOR EU DEMOCRACY" is a hard core ANTI-EU group with a bogus name. Just like the anti-EU people in "Open Europe".

  • disingenuous to say the least.

Yes any nation should be allowed to change it's mind but didn't the European Parliament vote, positively i might add, to NOT RESPECT the outcome of the Irish Referendum?

  • Can you be more specific? How could the European Parliament not respect Ireland's vote?

  • By a huge majority, 499 to 129, members of the European parliament voted not to respect Irelands democratic referendum by voting against the amendment which would Undertake to respect the outcome of the referendum in Ireland.

That was in 2008 before the first referendum took place.

  • I think that sounds weird. What the EP votes for or not, is irrelevant on this matter anyway. I haven't read the amendment.

I'm not sure if you are trying to use this as an argument against Lisbon, but the European Parliament is of course democratically elected by all citizens in Europe. What does you argument (is it an argument?) boil down to?

The MEPs will do all they can to promote Lisbon because it would strengthen the EU's parliamentary democracy.

  • Yes it is weird that a parliament would vote not to respect a referendum isn't it?

I'm saying that 'change of mind', as you seemed to suggest, is not the only reason that the Irish are having another referendum.

  • In the factual context that the Parliament's stance on this matter is completely irrelevant, I can understand why the vehemently pro-Lisbon majority in this chamber didn't vote in favour of some amendment (surely written by eurosceptics) that would make the parliament actively yell out that it would respect a no-vote, prior to voting day. But the Parliament's vast majority consists of democrats who of course formally respect national sovereignty. No one would DISPUTE the outcome.

  • The amendment (a serious of them) arose from the Corbett-deVigo Report on Lisbon. Manuel deVigo is a member of the EPP and hardly a eurosceptic i would think?

  • apologies.. Mendez de Vigo

  • Hmm ok, thanks for the details. But I can still see why some pro-lisbon MEPs would prevent the Parliament from actively sending out the nonobligatory signal that they're 'ok' with a no vote. I don't think the fact that they voted down this proposal prior to vote day concludes that the European Parliament is in the business of disrespecting national processes of democracy. Only sceptics would use this indirect implication to spin such a notion.

  • You are missing what i am saying. 'Change of Mind' is not the only reason that the Irish are having another referendum!!

It is a result of the French and Dutch NO to the Constitution that Corbett and De Vigo produced this amendment.

I accept that a majority of the parliament wish to see Lisbon ratified but that doesn't change the fact that they voted this way so as to progress with the ratification of the Treaty.

i.e. That no one country could stall it (like France and Holland did)

  • One could just as well demand that UKIP issues a statement saying that they "would respect a Yes vote" - and if they don't do it, claim that UKIP takes a Yes vote for a No.

  • Why do you mention UKIP?? They're not represented in my country!!

And i reject the 'sceptic' remark above.

You were disengenuous in your assertion that 'Change of Mind' is the reason that Ireland is having another referendum.

I am against Lisbon for many reasons. This however is a bone of contention i have with the parliament on the Lisbon treaty and referendums in general.

  • I mentioned UKIP because that asking them to actively pledge to respect a yes vote would be the equivalent to asking the european parliament to vote in favour of an amendment that actively says that a no vote would be ok.

  • I've never said that change of mind is the ONLY reason. The intent of the national government and the parliament to launch another referendum is of course also required.

Do you really think the EP's voting has influenced the initiation process of a 2nd referendum, other than helping a spin used by the far left and sinn fein?

Why do you think the overwhelming majority of directly elected MPs in all member states (small and large) support lisbon? NWO conspiracy? Bullying by the Commission?

  • Oh very smart and intellectual.. For stating facts and pointing out a flaw in an assertion you made, you attempt to discredit me as a conspiracy theorist, eurosceptic, either far-left or SF.

    I am none.

Read the Corbett-DeVigo report as to why those amendments were brought forward.

  • yes well there(UKIP) are running a no campaign in Ireland. with i find disgraceful as they want reunification of the UK and Ireland.

  • The parliamentarians who voted down this non-binding amendment are politicians who care just as much about political spin and headlines, as the eurosceptics who wrote the amendment and knew that it would be voted down and thus imply something that possibly could generate the headline "EU Parliament doesn't respect Ireland's vote".

  • do you even know what a dictatorship is? under one there would be no need for elections let alone referendum, stop exaggerating. Anyway would you stop the Irish public from voting again because it looks like it might go against you're politics?

  • Amazing video! 5*. Add it to my favourites.

  • Very good video!

  • Great video. It's good that it is neutral. And some of the anti-EUer still thinks that the Lisbon treaty will introduce the death penualty.

  • Very good! 5 stars and I will use it as my main channel video :)

  • Thank you for the vid. I hope more people from Ireland will watch this :)

  • And favourited too :)

  • I like this! Thanks ssolbergj. A great video!!
