I'd say trailers were more honest to what the movie offered. Movies were intended to catch audience inteligence not senses. Nowadays the cliche trailers (and movies) fill the stage: the hero always runs while some explosion happens behind him. The bad guy dies to resurrects seconds before the movie ends and scare everybody. Slow motion to make the action scenes as if they were on the Moon. Old movies are not design to buy spectators with gleaming glass but good plots.
