Yeah I hate when people try to sound coolby creating new sub genres like intelligent dnb or liquid dnb. Cmon people, stop it with this bullshit. It's just dnb. You didn't create anything new. It's been here for years.
...arrrrghhh! Don't call it 'intelligent..." it's music. Ergo - if a tune is 'not intelliegent' then logically what is it!!! Stupid?
Anyhow, I first saw Bukem at a do in Hatfield in 1992. About 100 people there (in a 1600 capacity venue) and he just smashed it. From then on it was all about following the path Danny was laying down - great music, mixed with skill and a know-how rooted in a rich musical heritage. Just class (check out the Yaman mixes - a template for any aspiring DJ).
I feel like such a child watching this, I listen to Bukem's sets all the time and I even make some chilled d'n'b at home. But hearing all his stories and hearing what he's doing now just touches my soul. . . sweet!
I view him as a neo jazz fusion artist, saw progression sessions at 1015 folsom s.f. in 2000 Undress Your Mind is a great new one as well, i used to spin and play shredding guitar riffs over Logical Progression when i played out, kids loved it!
I've loved his music, but GLR was part of 'a scene' as he mentions...and actually not the most prolific label at the time....it was MY favourite label (including LGR) at the time, but the SCENE was exploding...!!!
Grooverider, Doc Scott, Krust, Ed Rush, Optical....etc. etc. etc...THE SCENE was massive!
Bukem got me through college. Without his music, I just couldn't think clearly and accomplish my goals and homework. His music just has a simply good/chill sound to it that lets you not sweat the small stuff and focus on whatever task may face you.
Bukem, What a legend... obviously to those who watch this they know. To those that don't understand d&b, their loss I say. Fantastic evolving music, here's to the next 20 years :)
Goldie is wonderful, he is talented intelligent, and artistic as well. But I don't know if alot of people realise this fact. But a very talented sound engineer named Robert Playford was responsible for a staggering amount of goldies work, so I think a real musician and godfather of the rise of jungle deserves respect.
strange. I didn't get that impression of him I saw him in Denmark. After a blast of a show from the whole crew him and conrad came down to the bar and chatted with people for the rest of the night.
Elevator music? hahaha, its intelligent dnb, obviously your not on that level yet, its minimalistic and not over the top or commercial. You only call it elevator music coz it sounds simple but thats whats so good about it, it has a depth you cant hear just yet, maybe you never will.
@SamHain1031666 THANK YOU!!!! EXACTLY EXACTLY EXACTLY!!!!! YOU FIRST HEAR A BUKEM SONG SIMPLE, HEAR IT MORES TIMES THERES MANY LAYERS SO IN TURN MAKES THIS MUSIC LAST LONGER!!!!!!!!! ITS SIMILAR TO THE LAYERS ON AN ONION THE DEEPER IT GETS OVERTIME CUTTING INTO IT!!!!! THESE KIDS ON YOUTBE ARE GARBAGE MAKIN TROLLZZZZ!!!! THE SOOUND U HEAR IN HEAVEN IS LTJ BUKEM!!!!!
@awbz1 I never thought his music was simple, rather hard on first listening.I always thought he was interesting, but you really have to get deep into his music to feel it.
The Thing is, Goodlooking tends to produce drum & bass that is more organic sounding as from live instrumentation. They sometimes coin the phrase "intelligent drum & bass" as a way to describe the sound, although there is a distinct sound from liquid funk artists like makoto, nu:tone and marky, and the more organic sound of deep artist like bukem, adam f and jamie myerson.
just bought this album, its one of the best...probely the best dnb compilation i've bought, its nice to hear some great tunes in this new generation, dnb is finaly pickin up a bit
LTJ is still the best D&B producer and DJ in the world today. I first saw him in Brixton in 99 and have followed him since then. Progression Sessions all the way!! Love it!! Hope he continues on for ever!
uninspiring - wrong, of course it inspires, did you not just hear the man himself explaining the resurgence? im inspired and im sure thousands of others are too.
uncreative - maybe in some cases, but its about the vibe and some producers create the most intricate beats and sounds in liquid today. maybe its just difficult for some people to hear...
whats a melody in your opinion? i havnt heard ltj's mix yet but when you create a liquid mix its about how the tracks blend together and its hard for example in rock to do that because most songs have strong melodies, too strong in some cases. liquid can often be a lesson in restraint, so if you cant hear a 'melody', maybe theres not supposed to be one...
All depends on what liquid you listen to really, but then people class liquid in different genres, some people round ecerything of into liquid but theres also minimal lliquid stuff, i my self am into dbridge instra mental and photek but u kno
Liquid itself is an incredibly varied subgenre. Compare liquid tunes by the likes of Brookes Brothers, Blame, High Contrast, Chase & Status to liquid tunes by D-Bridge, Alix Perez, Instra:Mental, SpectraSoul, Random Movement, Mutt..
There's huge scope for liquid and it's more inspiring and creative than ever!
I seen him live in the us when i was n high school shit changed my life!

what a tosser, his tunes are elevator music and his ego belongs to a white rock star.

While I agree about the scope; it is unfortunate that most popular liquid is just glorified anthem trance with a 2-step drum pattern.
