Travels in the Scriptorium is best read with his other books in mind so you may get the references that so many reviewers missed. I thought Brooklyn Follies was excellent, and also enjoyed Oracle Nights-the tangential taking dimension to it especially, tho maybe this is what a lot of people didn't like about it. Bought Moon Palace but haven't read it yet. My favourite is Country of Last Things- always intrigued by dystopian writing. Heard it might be/or is already a film.
Auster's writing is closely related to his personal experience, in particular of poverty and of being a novice.Perhaps his sucess acts as a buffer against him experiencing the things that made his art once so vibrant
True Tales of American Life: Edited, not written, but it shows how corney Auster has become: coy homilies from the general public about chance occurences.Surely the writer of "Leviathan" can see how cring-making patriotism is in literature. Travels in the Scriptorium: I haven't read.

I have never heard about Paul Auster
I know Austin. Mini Cooper. Kool Kar.
And Austin 'vat's his name' the Le Canadien, the comedian. You know.

Yes, I totally agree. Hustvedt is the more talented writer.

Timbuktu: irritating and trite.
The Book of Illusions: Overwritten, turgid.
