this is sad but I can't believe they fired the worker who made a mistake. I wonder how many innocent dogs are put down daily & no one bats an eye. @BKPAGE-In theory no-kill shelters are a great idea. No shelter wants to put down animals or enjoys it. The only reason they do is because of the number of animals they receive. Ppl won't take the time/money to have their pets fixed, which would prevent millions of unwanted pets. Most shelters just can't afford to keep for very long all the animals they receive. Tragic mix up in this case. I still say something doesn't smell right-w/the collar & dog's condition.
There's got to be a better alternative than euthanizing dogs (besides neutering them). Perhaps they can be sent in the wild to fend for themselves. People are always talking about deer overpopulation. Why not kill two birds with one stone?

little target actually got out the back gate. A near by neighbor found her and took her to the animal shelter. They called the owner to let him know where his little one was. The family was going to pick her up, and when they got there they broke the news. I was in utter shock but I said that too, I was like how she get there I cried and cried....cant believe it.
What an sad story! The dog was an hero by being loyal to those soldiers by going through those dangerous streets with them in afghanistan ,made it out alive just to come back to the Usa and have a fucking dumbass that didn't follow a simple procedure and kill it by accident smfh.
The only thing good that could come out of this is that the Humane Society make very stricly followed euthanisia protacals and the idiot that seriously fucked up not ever be allowd to work for an animal organization again.

@txhockeygirl3 I used to work at a shelter. It's rare, but it happens. When a dog comes into a shelter, its assigned a number which is put on a piece of paper and put on the cage door. Sometimes just the paper is clipped on by itself, sometimes with a clip board, sometimes with a plastic clear pocket. The dogs get board in the cages, even with toys and often those cards get chewed off.
@zembowz If two dogs look similar its easy to print out a card for them that's not actually theirs. So lets say Target was "Tan shep mix #304" and she eats her card off the cage. An employee not personally knowing that's Target searches in the computer for a "tan shep mix". There could be a dozen there. She picks out the best guess (with a different number than Targets' real one), hangs up the card and moves on.
@zembowz Now lets say another employee gets a call from Targets' owner, does a more advanced search on the computer, finds Targets' REAL card and makes a note that Target will be reclaimed the next day, gives said note to yet ANOTHER employee to put on Targets' cage. The problem? This employee is looking for dog #304 while Target now has dog #225 on her cage and is being walked down to the one-way door.
