Tolkien's long story of Middle-Earth, Beleriand and Valinor just continuously moves from grief to grief like this though. Elrond came up in probably the very worst of times so you can't blame him for his pessimism.
whats even sadder is that it comes true. arwen and aragorn have three children. and when he dies, she goes into the forest of lothlorian to live with her mother and grandmother, only to realize that they all left in the ships to valinor. She wonders the forest in dispair, eventually becoming known as an ghostly widowed queen.. truely sad.
@guiltycross yeah her mom was torutred by orcs and left long ago, but at the end she still goes there HOPING they are still there. But i think that legolas is the only one left.. he goes to helms deep to see the gittering caves were gimli lives and they go together to the undying lands.
Normally I am not very pleased with the movies: They could have been brilliant and masterworks, the amazing scenery, the beautiful music and the fitting actors all point to that outcome but the stupid fat man directing them ruined all: Only in The Fellowship one does not realize how much but ever since the Two Towers his desire for stunning effects and his love for melodrama is obscene! More over the difference between the mortal men and the heroes is disgusting!
In the books the normal humans, elves and dwarfs are more than a bit stronger than their Orc adversaries but in the movies they are mowed down like weak straws while the heroes slay foes in heaps! Besides they left out Prince Imrahil and made the Ringwraiths far too strong; and all becomes a total mess in The Return of the King: The elephants are way too big, the whole story hastily and shallowly told and so on; and nothing is as boring as overdone special effects.
But then there are scenes like this one, which tempts me almost to forgive the fools who made this flick: This vision of mortality is amazing; watching Arwen to taste the bitterness of her choice and seeing Aragorn entombed with the very moving music and the bewitching speech of Elrond is a masterpiece; only when Galadriel is tempted to take the One Ring or when she speaks her vision afterwards matches this intensity; though the prologue to The Fellowship is the best part of the movies.
"He will come to death, an image of the splendor of the kings of Men in glory undimmed before the breaking of the world. But you, my daughter, you will linger on in darkness and in doubt, as nightfall in winter that comes without a star. Here you will dwell bound to your grief under the fading trees, until all the world is changed and the long years of your life are utterly spent."
Such beautiful words, haunting, yet beautiful. =)
They couldn't have chosen a better person to do the soundtrack... Enya <3

What a horrific fate to face................ to be told by your own father than everything you love will fail miserably.
