i don't get why he didn't keep gale for its effect, it's a great backup, and even if i would use it for a synchro summon, i would use its effect anyway

He played that Blackwing deck ALL wrong. Instead of using Duality first turn he could of summoned Shura, then Bora and Gale 'cause of their effects. Then, tune Gale with Bora for Armor Master. Also, next turn he could just normal summon Blizzard to get back Bora and synchro for Brionac! (or Goyo since I guess he's using it even though it's banned)

Leviathan is an optional effect and the last thing to happen on the field was not its destruction.

So it would miss its timing to to activate.

It also targets three cards in the grave, so even if its effect would go off the D.D. crow would stop it because it removes a targetted card in the grave.

Like when you crow a monster selected for avarice.
