Vandread, Gatekeepers, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Trigun, Cowboy Bebob, Ghost in a Shell, Bubblegum Crisis, Hunter x Hunter & Saber Marionette J were the Animes that are ahead of it's time. You could easily tell that they somewhat exceeds from the Animation Style

Early 2000s, Gonzo led the "quality" of animations with Vandread, Gatekeepers, Yukikaze etc...but they weren't truely "ahead" of their time in terms of genre defining.

Ghost in the Shell was groundbreaking in both animation quality and philosophical complexity, a new standard in anime motion pictures.

Neon Genesis Evangelion took the "anime" genre as a whole to a new level.

Not Gainax nor Anno could have predicted the outcome of NGE. It was just genre defining, because no other animated series or movies explored such psychological themes. It depicted a lot of sensitive themes normally regarded as "disgusting" that noone, if not in indie movies wanted to explore especially in a cartoon originially timeslotted for kids.

Yoshiyuki Sadamoto's character designs also made a leap too, kind of like how there's a "moe" trend nowadays.

Gasaraki is still considered by few to be groundbreaking in "mecha" genre, but was completely overshadowed by NGE's success.

As for Cowboy Bebop, it was stylish beyond what everyone predicted and it became an instant classic. Obviously well deserved acclaim from everywhere in the world.

Bubblegun Crisis maybe, but the rest, not really exceeding their time, otherthan Yoshihiro Togashi of HxH who is considered a genius mangaka only when he draws and doesn't get sidetracked.

This series was well made. Good story, good concept, good characters..To bad the OVA was f'ed up. Don't get me wrong it had a nice concept in it, what I don't like is how dark it was in contrast to this. And I don't like what happened to the future of these sweet characters.

@sp00kychin The only reason why that OVA was so out of place was more because the third GK series that was supposed to be made to tie GK and GK21 together was never made. Something happened, because GK simply went poof, to the point that even the show's official webside no longer exists.

Get you facts straight~ after high school, Rurika goes to a university then becomes a teacher... then marries someone else. Shun continues to stay in AIGIS and was killed by a boss alien. Gatekeepers 21 confirms this because the heroine's last name is different from Rurika's. Read the novel~

Hm...I read somewhere that the heroine in Gatekeepers 21 was Shun's child. But had a very unhappy childhood cause she lost her father a a young age. I think it was also mentioned in the show(which I caught about an episode worth) that the heroine's power is also the Gale Gate.

Ah yes, Gatekeepers. This was the second anime DVD I ever bought. Still an excellent series. Oddly I didn't discover until a year ago and this was actually the first time I heard Johnny Yong Bosch in a role aside from Power Rangers.
