This is a traditional Irish Ballad (written about scotland). Listen to christy moore or cara dillon to get an idea of how it originally sounds but the song is about 100 years old
One of my favs amongst the long list of Nina Simone songs. Beautiful, just simply beautiful is this song. Her voice and her musical talent will live on forever.
@bolder2009 Glad someone else noticed this. I know Jeff listened to Nina all his life growing up because his mum listened to her. And your spot on with the chanel spiriting thing lol especially at 1:50. Theres a big hollywood movie coming out next year all based on Jeff Buckleys life. Singer Reeve Carney has been cast to play him. Cant wait 4 that hopefully it will be done right so that people can see how much of a nice person and musical genius he was in his short life. Peace dude :)
@Crazycupmuffin However, as its already been green lighted, lets hope his music will be discovered by the ipod generation. I don't know how if it will really have that much of an impact, but Jeff's music and genius deserves more than a cult following. I feel they missed a trick, by not casting James Franco for the role of Jeff. If they ever made a movie about Nina, I feel they would fail to capture the full breadth and complexity of her life and music.
@bolder2009 couldnt agree more. With the amount of live stuff by Jeff I feel it could have a place where the ipod is concerned. And James Franco would have been the sensible choice as he is a more well known actor, but going with Reeve was the best choice in terms of music as he is an incredible singer songwriter and Jeffs mum picked him over James when she seen him play with his band. She believes theres a bit of Jeff in Reeve and I think people are going to be surprised by this young man.
@Crazycupmuffin Well let's hope she's right because he is going to have to carry the whole movie. He'll be in most of the scenes. If he is not compelling, the whole movie will fall apart and the reverse could happen. Ray Charles was rediscovered by a new generation because of the incredible performance of Jamie Fox in Ray. Billie holiday was introduced to a new audience by Diana Ross in Lady Sings The Blues. Those are the best musical biopics I know of which had an impact on a posthumous legacy.
@bolder2009 Yes i agree with you. I'm sure they will do him justice in the biopic. Another great biopic was I walk the line. Joaquin phoenix gave a great role of the late Johnny Cash. Wonder when the Jeff buckley movie will come out. Its supposed to be later in the year but i havent heard if they have started filming yet or not, they better get on their bikes soon.
@Crazycupmuffin Well I hope they do him justice. I can't imagine that Jeff would have been keen on his life being portrayed on the big screen. From the interviews I've seen of him and his sensibility, it would seem at odds with his persona to be a vehicle for Hollywood's myth making machine. He was never into that 60's revivalism and adhered to the virtue of living and being in the present. Concerning his music, he once said that the only thing that matters is the journey.
God, this song does not EVER get old. I've loved it since the moment I heard it. So much haunting beauty and longing with just a hint of melancholy. This is was the first song I'd ever heard Nina Simone sing and from that moment I was hooked. Still my absolute favorite years and years later.
I am 50 year's old. Back in the 60's between 1965 to about 1969 My father had a record with a man singing this song i think. It was a 331/3 but me as a child. I used to play the record at the 78 speed because it sound so funny. The only thing I could remember from the song was "Black was the color of my true love's hair ". So imaged my shock to find this today on youtube. No sure what triggered this memory
sorry just listened to christie moore and i like it but wasnt enough to bring these words to life this is the beautiful version but to each his own right ! peace to u all
this song is orignally irish it was a travellin song passed on by aural and oral tradition around the era of turlough o carolan and is one of the most beautiful irish traditional songs ever if you want to hear what it would have sounded like originally look up christy moore singing this song and you should be truly captivated
Apologies S, I just looked it up and it turns out it is an old travelling folk song (Though like others I suspect it was originally Scottish.) I always thought the guy that gave the tape to Christy wrote the song.
One of my fave Nina songs, next to *Wild Is The Wind*... I love playing this on the piano... Her songs bring back so many memories... She is one of the few musicians who really moved me since I was a baby...
I've been listening to versions of this song for the past half hour or so, and Nina's has struck me the hardest. Even if she does omit the most powerful lines in the song (I'll write her a letter, just a few short lines/And suffer death ten thousand times), Nina truly does the song service.
oops ........ i meant uncanny ............. and what i mean by that is
............ it is such a heartfelt song and it can almost communicate
how deep our loss was, of our spiritual beacon that was and is Reverend
Martin Luther King. He was lost to us on a physical plain, but thanks to movies,
etc. like Citizen King, some of the physical remains, in his words and deeds recorded for posterity. and he is not lost, he's around somewhere, and bless him forever - he is a REAL Christian.
SEE the youtube for this song and the documentary "Citizen King" part 13 at 4:45 ................ Nina's song is used to accompany this part of the documentary ..... uncannily good choice. :-)
i tried to include the youtube code for it but failed.
She was a goddess, what a voice, and I love the male-adressed version.
To answer the "original" question...it's a folk song, sung across America but probably coming from Scotland before hat. As such there are no "original versions" just amazing interpretations like this one.

Easily the best version ever recorded, and I believe it to be the original. IMHO she is far and away a better singer than the other two talented ladies-Judy Collins and Joan Baez. There have been very few if any better blues singers than Nina Simone ,and her Porgy and Bess performances are legendary,as are her French songs sung in English.
Thak u for this song. Great Nina. Great vocal. 've been searching for this song fr years. Nice song. I feel the essence of spirit that make me remain strong...
So... she's no 'trombone' - she's that expatriate black lady who recorded some records that I bought. And I only say that because I have to remember some very serious and insane recordings about classroom floors and southern news stations. Black was intelligence. That's had its say. Miss Wayman - I think - did well. She did have a good... time. Perhaps that wasn't quite what it seemed.
@rumpledilskin I meant to say her rendition of the song. Thanks for correcting me anyway all these years I thought it was an Irish folk song because of the line about black hair. Live and Learn. :)

@smurphy931 As the River Clyde is mentioned in the lyrics the song is often felt to be Scottish in origin.

That's a good story. Pity it's not true. It was written by a scottish guy who passed it on to Christy, that's how he got the song.
As for Nina's version. I normally like her, but this was just awful.
