  • This is a traditional Irish Ballad (written about scotland). Listen to christy moore or cara dillon to get an idea of how it originally sounds but the song is about 100 years old

  • Beautiful, just beautiful.

  • amazing

  • I sang this song today in private singing lessons. It was AMAZING.

  • add to a playlist:: make a new play list:: name it ... n:: turn repeat on:: play:: let the night roll by

  • just love it to bits

  • such a stunning cover of such an age old tune..... brilliant.

  • One of my favs amongst the long list of Nina Simone songs. Beautiful, just simply beautiful is this song. Her voice and her musical talent will live on forever.

  • such uh beautiful song.

i haven't heard this song in uh long time.

    CooLneSS!

  • thank you for the original version!!

  • @rocnaymo - its not the original version, but it is a good one :) check out Hamish Imlach's version also :3

  • @hippyonabike4u wait you mean this is not the original version? it says original..hmmm where can i find the actual one?

  • wow i know jeff buckley was a huge nina simone fan and u can tell. He sunds just like her at times when singing live.

  • @Crazycupmuffin I hear it as well. That man channeled spirits.

  • @bolder2009 Glad someone else noticed this. I know Jeff listened to Nina all his life growing up because his mum listened to her. And your spot on with the chanel spiriting thing lol especially at 1:50. Theres a big hollywood movie coming out next year all based on Jeff Buckleys life. Singer Reeve Carney has been cast to play him. Cant wait 4 that hopefully it will be done right so that people can see how much of a nice person and musical genius he was in his short life. Peace dude :)

  • @Crazycupmuffin However, as its already been green lighted, lets hope his music will be discovered by the ipod generation. I don't know how if it will really have that much of an impact, but Jeff's music and genius deserves more than a cult following. I feel they missed a trick, by not casting James Franco for the role of Jeff. If they ever made a movie about Nina, I feel they would fail to capture the full breadth and complexity of her life and music.

  • @bolder2009 couldnt agree more. With the amount of live stuff by Jeff I feel it could have a place where the ipod is concerned. And James Franco would have been the sensible choice as he is a more well known actor, but going with Reeve was the best choice in terms of music as he is an incredible singer songwriter and Jeffs mum picked him over James when she seen him play with his band. She believes theres a bit of Jeff in Reeve and I think people are going to be surprised by this young man.

  • @Crazycupmuffin Well let's hope she's right because he is going to have to carry the whole movie. He'll be in most of the scenes. If he is not compelling, the whole movie will fall apart and the reverse could happen. Ray Charles was rediscovered by a new generation because of the incredible performance of Jamie Fox in Ray. Billie holiday was introduced to a new audience by Diana Ross in Lady Sings The Blues. Those are the best musical biopics I know of which had an impact on a posthumous legacy.

  • @bolder2009 Yes i agree with you. I'm sure they will do him justice in the biopic. Another great biopic was I walk the line. Joaquin phoenix gave a great role of the late Johnny Cash. Wonder when the Jeff buckley movie will come out. Its supposed to be later in the year but i havent heard if they have started filming yet or not, they better get on their bikes soon.

  • @bolder2009 i tried to add u as a friend but it wont let me look at ur channel?

  • God, this song does not EVER get old. I've loved it since the moment I heard it. So much haunting beauty and longing with just a hint of melancholy. This is was the first song I'd ever heard Nina Simone sing and from that moment I was hooked. Still my absolute favorite years and years later.

  • Sensacional!

  • Always one of my favorite songs, she does it justice!

  • BEAUTIFUL!!!!

  • Enchanting!

  • This is equal to Tommy Makem's version...and a little bit better.

  • lindo demais a musica. adorei.

  • @camargotubegmail Realmente, é magnifica e Nina Simone também. Rockybrazil1

  • AZ - Love is Love

  • sorry just listened to christie moore and i like it but wasnt enough to bring these words to life this is the beautiful version but to each his own right ! peace to u all

  • this song is orignally irish it was a travellin song passed on by aural and oral tradition around the era of turlough o carolan and is one of the most beautiful irish traditional songs ever if you want to hear what it would have sounded like originally look up christy moore singing this song and you should be truly captivated

  • @smurphy931 As the River Clyde is mentioned in the lyrics the song is often felt to be Scottish in origin.

  • @smurphy931

That's a good story. Pity it's not true. It was written by a scottish guy who passed it on to Christy, that's how he got the song.

As for Nina's version. I normally like her, but this was just awful.

  • @smurphy931

Apologies S, I just looked it up and it turns out it is an old travelling folk song (Though like others I suspect it was originally Scottish.) I always thought the guy that gave the tape to Christy wrote the song.

  • Amazing. Can anyone tell me which album this was released on, originally?

  • One of my fave Nina songs, next to *Wild Is The Wind*... I love playing this on the piano... Her songs bring back so many memories... She is one of the few musicians who really moved me since I was a baby...

  • Christy Moore FTW!! his version is great!

  • LOVELY

    LOVELY!

  • After two crappy versions of this song, finally a good version. She put a spell on me...

  • I've been listening to versions of this song for the past half hour or so, and Nina's has struck me the hardest. Even if she does omit the most powerful lines in the song (I'll write her a letter, just a few short lines/And suffer death ten thousand times), Nina truly does the song service.

  • @shoeboy59 Youtube is a great place to get a dozen renditions of the same song from a dozen different artists...

  • Thank you for posting this. There are faaar too many remixed crap versions out there. Let's keep it original folks.

  • Lov

love Nina....but without exception the worst version of the Scottish artist Hamish Imlachs beautiful son ive ever herd..

  • @MrLiddesdale And your vocal chords sound???????

  • Chill to the bones

  • Chill to the bones

  • this ain't the album version either.. original has beautiful build-up piano intro.. classic song by the way and nice upload anyway

  • oops ........ i meant uncanny ............. and what i mean by that is

............ it is such a heartfelt song and it can almost communicate

how deep our loss was, of our spiritual beacon that was and is Reverend

Martin Luther King. He was lost to us on a physical plain, but thanks to movies,

etc. like Citizen King, some of the physical remains, in his words and deeds recorded for posterity. and he is not lost, he's around somewhere, and bless him forever - he is a REAL Christian.

  • SEE the youtube for this song and the documentary "Citizen King" part 13 at 4:45 ................ Nina's song is used to accompany this part of the documentary ..... uncannily good choice. :-)

i tried to include the youtube code for it but failed.

  • She was a goddess, what a voice, and I love the male-adressed version.

To answer the "original" question...it's a folk song, sung across America but probably coming from Scotland before hat. As such there are no "original versions" just amazing interpretations like this one.

  • Amazing version. Always unique. Takes on a different meaning entirely.

  • NINA SIMONE DISPENSA COMENTARIOS BELA MUSICA BELA VOZ ESTA SIMPLESMENTE MAGNIFICA

  • Easily the best version ever recorded, and I believe it to be the original. IMHO she is far and away a better singer than the other two talented ladies-Judy Collins and Joan Baez. There have been very few if any better blues singers than Nina Simone ,and her Porgy and Bess performances are legendary,as are her French songs sung in English.

  • Beautiful!

  • This Woman was a Gift from God to this Earth..Thank God for allowing this angel to grace us all...Rest in Peace Nina Simone.

  • @drod1200 -Amen!

  • Black was the color of my true love's hair so long ago...

Graying is now the color of my true love's hair! :)

  • @LeftyLadybug YOU AIN'T GOT TO TELL EVERYBODY

  • @LeftyLadybug well your lucky hes still your true love <3

  • @LeftyLadybug You still look lovely in your own way.

  • Power in her voice! Simply beautiful!

  • wow

  • Sends shivers down my spine!

  • She was wonderful. What a great voice...so full of feeling!

  • One of my favorite Nina Simone's songs

  • Actually this song was written in Scotland.... a long long time ago. It is a Scottish folk song. Interesting version.

  • GOD. My favorite song at the moment.♥

Black Is The Color Of My True Love's Hair, indeed.

  • this is liberation music. I see why she was banned this is deep and timeless.

  • Amazing version of this beautiful Scottish song, love it!

  • Amazing version of this beautiful Scottish song, love it!

  • What a beautiful song

  • Here is proof that music doesn't have to be complex to be beautiful. I could listen to her all day.

  • Oh, so long ago. GOT IT ALL!

So... she's no 'trombone' - she's that expatriate black lady who recorded some records that I bought. And I only say that because I have to remember some very serious and insane recordings about classroom floors and southern news stations. Black was intelligence. That's had its say. Miss Wayman - I think - did well. She did have a good... time. Perhaps that wasn't quite what it seemed.

  • Nina posso sentire tutta la passione della tua anima dentro me. Nina I can feel all your passionate soul inside me. Ti amo. I love you.

  • This is simply breathtaking.

  • Love Nina

  • my concert band is playing this song. We love it.

    Bravissima Nina!

  • Ive been looking for this song for such a long time...probably since 93 or 94, when I heard it on a twilight zone episode.

  • omg what twilight zone episode? love that show lol

  • @Camillia2008 The Passers By is the name of the episode. I was just watching it and looked up the song and found this link, lol.

  • @CliftonRW really i have to watch that episode now lol

  • i heard a 'downtempo' remix of this the other day. Fucking awful, destroyed it :(

  • she is the greatest!!

  • OMFG. This is simply amazing. Nina`s voice and talent are unique!

  • Favorite Nina Simone Song.

  • une de ses plus belles chansons d'après moi...

Une voix sublime. Un immense talent...

  • Beautiful!

  • brilliant and chilling. you couldn't play this at a funeral, it would be too fucking depressing, yet it reeks of death.

  • thank u 4 puttin dis up..2 deep 10/10

  • BEAUTIFUL

  • that gives me the creeps... love her voice...

  • Thank you for putting up the original version sung by Nina.

  • @Lunawhynot

This song is not by Nina Simone. This is a traditional folk song, probably from late 19 to early 20th century Scotland.

  • @rumpledilskin I meant to say her rendition of the song. Thanks for correcting me anyway all these years I thought it was an Irish folk song because of the line about black hair. Live and Learn. :)

  • @Lunawhynot

So did I, until someone pointed out the line: "I went down to the Clyde..." But Glasgow is kind of an extension of Ireland really!

  • @rumpledilskin Actually, American folksinger John Jacob Niles wrote this one.

  • @lordhenryVIII Mr. Niles was a collector of folk songs and he did much to re-popularize this song, but he did not write it. Most sources attribute this as an anonymous Scottish ballad.

  • @lordhenryVIII haha, are you joking?

  • @Lunawhynot This isn't actually the original verson, but it's beautiful none the less..........

  • @lostnparody -Then pray tell what is the original version.I believe this to be just that.

  • @paulostroff99 NO one knows what the original version is or where it is from. The song was discovered in the Appalachian region of the United States, but could well have been a lost song of the British Isles.

  • @Lunawhynot -Thank you for enlightening those incapable of reading.Nina sings the ORIGINAL VERSION.

  • @Lunawhynot I dont think it is, it is a traditional Scottish folk song most probably. but she did bring it back to the fore.

  • @Lunawhynot what original version? it's a folk song
