  • Melanie was such a cutie and so inspiring as a singer

  • @Tommiboy193 Melanie is still alive, recording and touring and has as gracefully as fine wine. Check it out: melaniesafkadotcom Her new CD, available at the website, is terrific. Tell them abargle sent you!

  • Melanie is so underappreciated nowadays! She was awesome!

  • I love it .

  • This is too good.

  • MEOW!

  • i love melanie she got me through some hard times in the 70 s even though she s a yank

  • @everybody: Don't take gordbard's bait. I say it's his loss and let it go at that.

  • He can hardly be bothered to be there. He's just daydreaming about his next fix.

  • Doesn't Melanie look like Linda Ronstadt? They even had the same hair.

  • @Rayarena Yes, I always thought Linda and Melanie looked a bit alike. That's why I love both of them.

  • love johnny he was the best & Melanie is the original hippie chick and was beautiful & talented.

  • Melanie was famous more for her looks than her musical talent...

  • @yukonnoka negative

  • @yukonnoka bollocks!

  • Two of the best voices, hands down.

  • Melanie.. you are the Goddess!

  • GRAND BRAVO FOR EACH OF THEM; TIMELESS !!

  • Good singing but bizarre camera angles. She's aiming the guitar at the audience.

  • love her

  • WOW..never knew Melanie appeared on JCs show!

  • the most beautiful singing voice on the planet earth!

  • Melanie did it when Stevie was in diapers. Notice the similarities?

  • lewisner - too true buddy,

  • Cash was so cool. He had some great artists on his show. Dylan comes to mind.

  • Never stop lovin' Melanie!!

  • Guitar doesn't works with the hair

  • Cash pretty much paraded every musician of most genres with pure talent across the stage of the Ryman. His integrity factor was way up there. Where's the Johnny Cash of the 21st century?

  • @mountaintyme2000 I've asked myself that same question. Also, where is the Stevie Wonder, Lennon and McCartney, Smokey Robinson, Bee Gees, Joni Mitchell and the many other artists that played real musical instruments and wrote music for other artists in this century? I don't mind listening to the music from my teen years but it would be nice to know that we haven't completely lost our imaginations. Don't get me started on screenwriters. Heard they are remaking "To Kill a Mockingbird."

  • @mountaintyme2000 Good comment, and good question at the end. I watched John's show as a teenager, and was amazed at the broad brush he was painting with when it comes to music featured. I'm afraid what we have now on TV is what was predicted by the movie "Network" in 1976...cheap to produce trash TV. Some call it "Reality TV", although it's not the reality of anyone I know.

  • Loved her since I was a kid.......when I first heard Brand New Key as maybe a 5 year old.....shes is gorgeous.....

  • Yeah She IS sweet :+), But that sayed, I do miss Cash

  • Her and Linda Rondstat coul pass for sisters !

  • two of the biggest heroes from the sixties together, Awesome! thnx alot for this upload, you made my day :)

  • Sweetly erotic

  • She's terrific, I shoulda seen her at Woodstock, but didn't go. She still is terrific, seen her some months back, her voice is still powerful, does a great show, , great personality.

  • Nice, beautiful woman with a great voice

  • I loved the duet - Johnny Cash had a unique voice that seemed to work as a duet vocalist with anyone. Cash's, as always, dark and brooding vocals blend and work perfectly with Melanie's, gentle, and then soaring and powerful vocals. Love it!

  • What was neat about Melanie was that she had (has) such a powerful voice for such a small, cute woman . . .

  • Very Nice Duett !! Johnny is very careful about Melanie !

  • My first crush...she was just gorgeous

  • @holmeed - Me too, she was adorable.

  • always liked her!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • She looked a lot like linda ronstadt back then- - kinda yummy! as such!!

  • I could lick her hair

  • @Syzygy60 i know! why is it so shiny?? LOL

  • if ur watching Melanie my friend brought your album to a Libertarian Meeting 6 years ago or so and you signed it...remember? That was my album :)

  • 15 years sorry mel

  • fi can have a girlfriend 20 odd years older than me she is it

  • All of a sudden I like this song. Good to see her rock out on Johnny Cash.

  • I love this video clip. Thank you for sharing this. My mother used to sing Melanie songs to me as lullabies. I grew up on her and had an extensive album collection. Sadly they were destroyed in a flood in my home over a decade ago. So grateful to find her here on Youtube.

  • Dang this is Great! I love melanie and I always loved this song

The Man in Black had a wonderful show too

  • What's the name of the first song?

  • @luwel1 it's called "baby guitar"

  • @estrelladembicer

    thanks :)

  • This duet was amazing! What a pair, Johnny Cash and Melanie! No, they didn't exactly harmonize well, both being lead singers but it was rousing and beautiful anyway. What a pair of voices!

  • gotta love Johnny!

  • wow two great unique voices on a classic diddy..

  • This is a great video....and 1969 was a great year......what I would give to go back if not only for a few minutes.....

  • Melanie looks like she got the hots for Mr Cash

  • I'm not a big country fan but I have heard about 5 versions of this song and never cared for it until this version...sorry..

  • Is she pregnant? Or am I not informed?

  • @disengage1984 : No not in 1969. I think she settles down to start her family in 1973. Its in the mid to late 70's that her kids were born.

  • The first song is called Baby Guitar. It's from Melanie's first album "Born To Be."

  • what is the title of the first song?

  • a long forgotten artist for some of us. just forgot a tremendous artist i would say. Loved the duet too. some people have startched shirts if they can't appreciate this.

  • Melenie was a fantastic singer performer...Thanks For the share My Friend..***** Many Stars..*******))

  • How is it that I have never heard of this wonderful musician before tonight ?

She's awesome !! I love her style and I listen to metal .

  • PRO!

  • i love her lungs

  • Melanie!! You could have been a great country singer too. Cash's style is a little gruff to follow & usually needs a female vocalist that's flamboyant like June, Dolly, Loretta Lynn -- but Melanie stood toe to toe with the legendary Cash & did so very well. Powerful. What a great video momento. Melanie is still performing & recording today, & like Richie Havens oftens covers songs brilliantly. She deserves a lot more attention. Hey, Conan...Leno...Letterman. Got five minutes for a great lady?

  • Great duet at the end. It doesn't matter if it has to be between a cheater and cheatee or what not. Its Melanie singing so enjoy!

  • Johnny Cash!

  • You guys are crazy.. Its a great duet.

  • Melanie and I are homies from Astoria, NY, she is about 4 years older than me. Good to see old Melanie tracks, especially when Johnny Cash sits in.

  • Classic !!!!

  • OH,I used to wish I was her!

  • I hate to admit this, but I don't remember this sequence. It was a long time ago, and the tapes of the shows I had would degrade rapidly, so it would be easy enough for this to slide past me. I do remember Pete Seeger, Brenda Lee, Linda Ronstadt, George Goble and O. C. Smith appearing on the Cash show. If you have the Seeger appearance, please let me know. Do your recordings include the cigarette commercials?

  • I fell in love with her back in 1970 or so! Thanks for posting, very nice.

  • No longer a recognized star in America, she still is a super star in Europe.

  • @birddog2017 That's because sadly in America we lack taste (I'm American) I know bad taste when I hear it. The music industry here just pumps out crap and expect it to be music. Melanie is my favorite singer and I had the honor to meet her when she performed at Infinity Hall in Norfolk, CT. Sadly it was her husband Peter's last show he passed away from a heart attack a few days before Halloween. Melanie is so personable too very friendly. In fact I am friends with her personal assistant No joke

  • @FolkMusicFanatic spice girls. <- uk

  • she looks a bit like Linda Ronstadt, very pretty, thanks for posting.

  • @kenp3L THAT's what you took away from this performance? Really?

  • @kenp3L Oh, you listened to a full 20 seconds before drawing your conclusion. That explains it. No hard feelings--have a nice day!

  • @abargle LMAO at this whoe convo....

  • @abargle llolololo

  • @abargle I think it was great not enough types like melanie, it wasnt here best song but still interesting

  • @kenp3L ,

ol fat melanie, called by albert grossman music professor at columbia univ 'a cupey doll' is terrible and is still cruising the circuit of candlelight theatre, cheap music revue etc, still performing right up to the day mercifully she dies! a-singin her songs!

  • @atfatw : You obviously have no taste. I'm young and I love Melanie and her music. I saw her live and your accusation that she is FAT is unfounded not to mention in poor taste. Music sucks in this day and age so I'm glad I found Melanie. The best singer in earth....Yes even better than those stupid Beatles everybody raves about.

  • @kenp3L Gee, I always thought Silver Threads 'n' Golden Needles wuz a song about gettin' yer pants fixed at a Beverly Hills tailor...

  • @kenp3L Over-egging the pudding a little Ken....you should hear 'It's only make believe' by Tiny Tim and Ernest Tubb.

  • @kenp3L Give it a break. Enjoy the nostalgia.

  • @kenp3L Give it a break. Enjoy the nostalgia.

  • What has your being named after her to do with her?

  • I remember this on TV I was 8. I roller skated to her 45 for hours at a time. Love Mel

  • I remember this on TV I was 8. I roller skated to her 45 for hours at a time

  • You're right, the duet was worth waiting for.

  • Melanie was such a babe.-

  • @lewisner she was adorable right love her spunk she is a great representation of the 60's movement..

glad she's still singing, i hope her health is okay i know she gained alot of weight & i hope she doesn't have any health issues from it.. go melanie...

  • @MOSKII58 : She's great. She has gained a bit, but don't we all. She was very lively when I met her last year.

  • @lewisner Bet she brushed that hair 100 times a night and used Breck shampoo. LOL...she was absolutely natural and gorgeous!!! Look at those eyes!!

  • August 16, 1969 the day after she played on woodstock...

  • 2 of the greats!

  • Melanie is great I am glad I am alive at the same time as her it's been a privelige watching and listening

  • catch Melanie in Colorado Springs 10.10.10

  • @eventsinmusic Plz post some clips. Going to be impossible for me to get there from UK.

  • Love it, love it, love it! Did I mention that I love it?!!!

  • This is great, two of my great inspirations in this world singing a song together. And that spontaneous kiss on the cheek in the end made me laugh, that was really sweet!

  • The metaphor of a woman giving birth to her art is a sublime feminist lyric.

  • Great songs, but the close ups of her face and the way she is moving, it's shot like a porn.

  • She was so beautiful.

  • Oh Lord, this is so beautiful. I love both of these people so much.

  • I love Melanie's sweet sounding singing voice. Very nice song here!

  • Wow!

  • OMG! CLASSIC

  • They sing together like they had been performing country duets together for years!

  • @Grithron: That won't stop me from asking Saint Peter at the gates of Heaven when he asks me if I have any other questions. I'll look at him and ask: Saint Peter did Melanie make it in?

  • Terrific stuff.

But, Bookkeeper please note, she wasn't a Christian. Back then she was a Meher Baba disciple (i.e unorthodox Muslim), then for various reasons she switched gurus to some lady whose name escapes me (this time an unorthodox Hindu - bet that went down well in the subcontinent!) And now she doesn't define herself by any organised religion (I don't blame her!)

  • @Grithron2 The Guru is named Mother Amma as far as I know. I know that God would forgive her though because hey they were both hippies (Jesus was in a whole other sense) and Melanie was in another.

  • whats the name of the song she sings at the start?

Thanks for the upload, brilliant :-)

  • @TheeGrandmaster The first song is called Baby Guitar from the album Affectionately Melanie.

  • I am fortunate to have been witness to "old" TV. From the Ed Sullivan Show, the Smother's Brothers, The Midnight Special, The Johnny Cash Show, Carol Burnett,...the list seems endless. And here I thought it was "gone" forever! Thanks Youtube! Thanks abargle!

  • Outstanding ! The talent today will be -- Who ?? Huh ?? While these talented performers will still be in demand. for a long time to come.

  • @dbldtch: Music went down the drain probably after 1976. When hard rock, pop, metal, and other rubbish replaced it. I'm no expert but that's my opinion. Melanie is my favorite singer she's amazing!

  • What happened to the music? They just don’t make it like this anymore. We are presented with Lady GaGa, but how can you compare that with this? Or should we just NOT compare? And Melanie,… well she is indeed timeless and way up there with the likes of Joni Michell. I think that nowadays the only thing that comes close to that is maybe Melissa Etheridge. So please tell me, what ever happened to music?

  • Melanie just rocks the house ! The duet is amazing Melanie just soars !

    Timeless !

  • The song was written by Andrew Jackson Rhodes - my former father-in-law

  • her laugh is so cute. (:

  • Melanie & Johnny Cash together!!! How awesome is that? What a great memory

  • Didn't think was a cover until I heard Linda Ronstadt do the same song...ends up both rocked it!

  • I love her live LP (yes, I said "LP") She forgets the words to one song, and taught me not to eat cows.

  • OooooOooooOoOOOO God

  • I realize that but to me he was flirting a little bit

  • Well that's true but it sure seemed j. R. Flirted a lot with female performers!

  • @Cartercash4ever Melanie was J.R.'s type, but young enough to be his daughter.

He liked pretty, energetic brunettes. Kind of like June Carter.

  • @bookkeeper57 Actually, Johnny was only maybe 13 years, 14-tops older than Melanie.

  • For someone who asked: Melanie Safka is not Russian or Jewish. She is Ukrainian (dad from Ukraine, mom from Italy) and Christian.

  • Thanks J.R. Thanks for promoting alot of the young musicians back then. God guided you out of that mine for a reason.

  • Dam hippies.

  • Videos like this make me happy the internet exists.

  • oooooooooooo!

  • By the way, this was about 2 1/2 years before she did that roller skates song.

  • now we know where linda ronstadt got the idea!

  • Yes I remember this when it aired ! It is still great!

  • This is now my all-time favorite version of "Silver Threads" --- wonderful!!!

  • Trés bon duo Johnny et Melanie!

  • Comment removed

  • J. R. Cash is #1. R. I. P. J. R. !

  • yes, yes, yes

  • J. R. Sang the best! R. I. P. J. R. Cash!

  • Beautifuuuuuulllllllllllllllllllll!!!!!!

  • awesome duet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • One word: MELANIE. God bless J.C.

  • Amen! This was great!j. R. Sang wonderful As usual! R. I. P. J. R. !

  • You tagged it right....that Silver Threads and Golden Needles is AMAZING

  • I actually remember when this aired. Its a good thing again that June was not the jealous type! J. R. Was flirting terribly!

  • @Cartercash4ever June had no problems with female performers on the Johnny Cash show who were genuine artists and ladylike personalities. She loved Joni Mitchell. In her own words, she resented Linda Ronstadt for showing up in a minidress, "with no underwear".

  • I've been in love Melanie with since 1969.

She just played in Columbus Ohio a few months ago.

  • I am 32, but I remember my father platin "ring the bell" what a good song

  • Her voice hasn't changed, even now in 2009.

  • Now I see who infl Stevie nicks

  • Is she the Melanie who sang the 'Brand New Key' song?

  • Yes. She is, and I LOVE that song!

  • @bamerongirl4ever who wrote and played the brand new key song

  • what do you mean?

  • Oh, I get it. Girlznguitarz is asking you who wrote and played that song. IT WAS MELANIE!!!

  • Yeah, what do you mean? My sister didn't write or play that song.

  • @MOLLYryaiMOON

She`s the Melanie who not only sang the song: Brand New Key she wrote it

  • this lady had a great voice

  • @yazbos67 has she aint deed yet

  • She kinda of reminds me of Linda Ronstadt from the same era.....

  • lordy .. the years went by like months, months like weeks, weeks like days, days like hours ....didn't they?

  • how did she get her hair so shiny?
