Cash pretty much paraded every musician of most genres with pure talent across the stage of the Ryman. His integrity factor was way up there. Where's the Johnny Cash of the 21st century?
@mountaintyme2000 I've asked myself that same question. Also, where is the Stevie Wonder, Lennon and McCartney, Smokey Robinson, Bee Gees, Joni Mitchell and the many other artists that played real musical instruments and wrote music for other artists in this century? I don't mind listening to the music from my teen years but it would be nice to know that we haven't completely lost our imaginations. Don't get me started on screenwriters. Heard they are remaking "To Kill a Mockingbird."
@mountaintyme2000 Good comment, and good question at the end. I watched John's show as a teenager, and was amazed at the broad brush he was painting with when it comes to music featured. I'm afraid what we have now on TV is what was predicted by the movie "Network" in 1976...cheap to produce trash TV. Some call it "Reality TV", although it's not the reality of anyone I know.
She's terrific, I shoulda seen her at Woodstock, but didn't go. She still is terrific, seen her some months back, her voice is still powerful, does a great show, , great personality.
I loved the duet - Johnny Cash had a unique voice that seemed to work as a duet vocalist with anyone. Cash's, as always, dark and brooding vocals blend and work perfectly with Melanie's, gentle, and then soaring and powerful vocals. Love it!
I love this video clip. Thank you for sharing this. My mother used to sing Melanie songs to me as lullabies. I grew up on her and had an extensive album collection. Sadly they were destroyed in a flood in my home over a decade ago. So grateful to find her here on Youtube.
This duet was amazing! What a pair, Johnny Cash and Melanie! No, they didn't exactly harmonize well, both being lead singers but it was rousing and beautiful anyway. What a pair of voices!
a long forgotten artist for some of us. just forgot a tremendous artist i would say. Loved the duet too. some people have startched shirts if they can't appreciate this.
Melanie!! You could have been a great country singer too. Cash's style is a little gruff to follow & usually needs a female vocalist that's flamboyant like June, Dolly, Loretta Lynn -- but Melanie stood toe to toe with the legendary Cash & did so very well. Powerful. What a great video momento. Melanie is still performing & recording today, & like Richie Havens oftens covers songs brilliantly. She deserves a lot more attention. Hey, Conan...Leno...Letterman. Got five minutes for a great lady?
I hate to admit this, but I don't remember this sequence. It was a long time ago, and the tapes of the shows I had would degrade rapidly, so it would be easy enough for this to slide past me. I do remember Pete Seeger, Brenda Lee, Linda Ronstadt, George Goble and O. C. Smith appearing on the Cash show. If you have the Seeger appearance, please let me know. Do your recordings include the cigarette commercials?
@birddog2017 That's because sadly in America we lack taste (I'm American) I know bad taste when I hear it. The music industry here just pumps out crap and expect it to be music. Melanie is my favorite singer and I had the honor to meet her when she performed at Infinity Hall in Norfolk, CT. Sadly it was her husband Peter's last show he passed away from a heart attack a few days before Halloween. Melanie is so personable too very friendly. In fact I am friends with her personal assistant No joke

@abargle That's correct. The first song with just Melanie was nice, but the duet was horrible. I only listen for about 20 seconds.
Silver threads is about a woman complaining about her cheating man. With one talented female singer, it sounds good. As a duet between a cheater and a cheatee, it's stupid and it is unpleasant to listen to.
ol fat melanie, called by albert grossman music professor at columbia univ 'a cupey doll' is terrible and is still cruising the circuit of candlelight theatre, cheap music revue etc, still performing right up to the day mercifully she dies! a-singin her songs!
@atfatw : You obviously have no taste. I'm young and I love Melanie and her music. I saw her live and your accusation that she is FAT is unfounded not to mention in poor taste. Music sucks in this day and age so I'm glad I found Melanie. The best singer in earth....Yes even better than those stupid Beatles everybody raves about.
@lewisner she was adorable right love her spunk she is a great representation of the 60's movement..
glad she's still singing, i hope her health is okay i know she gained alot of weight & i hope she doesn't have any health issues from it.. go melanie...
This is great, two of my great inspirations in this world singing a song together. And that spontaneous kiss on the cheek in the end made me laugh, that was really sweet!
@Grithron: That won't stop me from asking Saint Peter at the gates of Heaven when he asks me if I have any other questions. I'll look at him and ask: Saint Peter did Melanie make it in?
But, Bookkeeper please note, she wasn't a Christian. Back then she was a Meher Baba disciple (i.e unorthodox Muslim), then for various reasons she switched gurus to some lady whose name escapes me (this time an unorthodox Hindu - bet that went down well in the subcontinent!) And now she doesn't define herself by any organised religion (I don't blame her!)
@Grithron2 The Guru is named Mother Amma as far as I know. I know that God would forgive her though because hey they were both hippies (Jesus was in a whole other sense) and Melanie was in another.
I am fortunate to have been witness to "old" TV. From the Ed Sullivan Show, the Smother's Brothers, The Midnight Special, The Johnny Cash Show, Carol Burnett,...the list seems endless. And here I thought it was "gone" forever! Thanks Youtube! Thanks abargle!
@dbldtch: Music went down the drain probably after 1976. When hard rock, pop, metal, and other rubbish replaced it. I'm no expert but that's my opinion. Melanie is my favorite singer she's amazing!
