Sorry I couldn't fit all the lyrics in one post, I'm new at this. Hope this helps some people though even with some of the words being unintelligible. This was one of the original in a long serious of songs called "Cocaine Blue"
Cocaine Blues
(Luke Jordan)
Oh go on, gal, don't you take me for no fool
I'm not gonna quit you, pretty mama, while the weather's cool
Now I got a girl, she works in the white folk's yard She brings me meal, I can swear she brings me lard She brings me meat, she brings me lard She brings me everything, I swear, that she can steal Now Barn and Beale's (?) circus came to town, They had an elephant looking good and brown They did not know it was against the law For the monk to stop at a five drugstore Just around the corner, just a minute too late, Another one's standin' at the big back gate I'm simply wild about my good cocaine
Now the baby's in the cradle in New Orleans, it kept a-whippin' till it got so mean It kept a-whippin had to fix it so (indecipherable) Saying, run doctor, ring the bell - the women in the alley I'm simply wild about my good cocaine I called my Cora, hey hey She come on sniffin' with her nose all sore, The doctor swore (she's) gonna smell no more Sayin', run doctor, ring the bell - the women in the alley I'm simply wild about my good cocaine
Wow, I think Superhardshell is right. Part of Feel Like I'm Fixin' To Die Blues comes straight out of this. Did Joe McDonald have a killer collection of 78's ? I remember when we all sang Fixin to Die in a troop transport truck at Ft Leonard Wood, MO, in the winter of '72. No wonder they gave up the draft in 1973.
I have never heard this song before. Thank you, ragtime, for turning me on, and I do not mean to the cocaine. Great song, will look for more of Luke Jordan
He sings "Cocain's for horses not for men...." the part from the version we all like. Shows how bits and pieces of material were borrowed for other arrangements thru the years.
Great voice and a good flow of the music--good stuff. Loved to have seen this guy. Now I know where Country Joe McDonald got his riff on 1 2 3 what are we fightin for, dont ask me I dont give a damn next stop is VietNam etc
@iwwobblie Who says a Piedmont blues song can't be a ragtime chord progression? Ragtime blues is Piedmont. Quit being a know it all douchebag and listen to the music.
[2/5] Now Barnum & Bailey Circus came to town Had an elephant looking good & brown Didn't know it was against the law For the monkey to stop at a five drugstore Just around the corner just a minute too late Another one's standin at the big back gate Im simply wild about my good cocaine *CHORUS: I called my Cora, hey hey She come on sniffin w/ her nose all sore The doctor swore she's gonna smell no more Sayin, run doctor, ring the bell-the women in the alley I'm simply wild about my good cocaine
LYRICSPOST COCAINE BLUES - Luke Jordan [1/5] Oh go on, gal, don't you take me for no fool I'm not gonna quit you, pretty mama, while the weather's cool Around your back door, oh honey, I'm gonna creep As long as you make those two & a half a week Now I got a girl, she works in the white folk's yard She brings me meal, I can swear she brings me lard She brings me meat, she brings me lard She brings me everything, I swear, that she can steal
1890s as a wonder drug to cure headaches, gout etc. It was not until the early 1900's that it was realized that it was " causing problems." It was banned in the US in 1916

I called my Cora, hey hey
She come on sniffin' with her nose all sore,
The doctor swore (she's) gonna smell no more
Sayin', run doctor, ring the bell - the women in the alley
I'm simply wild about my good cocaine
Now the furniture man came to my house, it was last Sunday morn
He asked me was my wife at home and I told him she had long gone
He backed his wagon up to my door, took everything I had
He carried it back to the furniture store and I swear I did feel sad

[5/5]
Now the baby's in the cradle in New Orleans
The dog's getting whippin til the baby got mean
Stopped the whippin til the baby got sore
Mama said she couldn't smell no more
Sayin, go doctor, ring the bell-the women in the alley
I'm simply wild about my good cocaine

[4/5] If ever there was a devil born w/out horns It must have been a furniture man *Repeat CHORUS
Now the baby's in the cradle in New Orleans
It kept a-whippin til it got so mean
It kept a-whippin had to fix it (?)
Sayin, run doctor, ring the bell-the women in the alley
I'm simply wild about my good cocaine
*Repeat CHORUS

He backed his wagon up to my door, took everything I had
He carried it back to the furniture store & I swear I did feel sad
What in the world has anyone got for dealing w/ the furniture man
If you got no dough you stand no show, it's certain he'll back you back
He'll take everything from an earthly plant, from a skillet to a frying pan
