if it weren't for Ubuntu , i wouldn't be using gnu/linux anymore but i don't see anypoint in so much criticism of fedora. It is the cutting-edge mainstream distro & yeah stable, relatively noob-friendly , it's goal is totally different from Ubuntu. I said it before, I like your show , i learn some awesome stuff and get lot of news but you do too much bashing of fedora folks.(suggestion : avoid talking about them , we'll be happy and u'll probably too i hope :) ) FYI , I use Fedora full-time.
you , guy's are unbeliavable , you said Deja-Dup in Ubuntu is a new awesome feature ... I don't it's me , I think it was in repos of fedora freakin' 13 and default in freakin' 15 and one small request, please don't review Fedora from now on and totally avoid covering in news as well. I know you like ubuntu , many people does but you are kinda too much harsh on fedora guys ,"lighten-up!", this is biased journalism .... Don't get me wrong I totally like Debian.
Redhat/Fedora generate profit and show that the OpenSource is actually worth investing money and manpower.
Ubuntu is just a huge waste of money for Cannonical who failed miserably to generate serious profit. Oh well, at least they have a "developer control panel" for software no one buys. :-D
But I guess that's Ok as long as they can suck on Shuttleworth's titties. ;-)
@BitaminaTek Unlike Redhat/Fedora Canonical is developing a home desktop distro that millions of home users enjoy every day. Who cares about profit when you are making the best Linux distro ever!
@BitaminaTek Dude, you are bit too explicit , but i get your point, you don't have to pick on Mr Shuttleworth, He had his idea , like no one said it to make it free,he did and so far has failed, I personally respect his idea, he was basically trying to make "buisness through goodwill" ,but didn't fly , as things went south he created "contributors agreement", wanted copyrights on some projects ,brought gaziilions of proprietory software into ubuntu, He accused Redhat as proprietory company.
@BitaminaTek and brought Unity on main desktop eventhough there was gnome-shell , just b'coz Gnome team wanted a different design ,but i still hope , he'll reconsider and bring more FOSS software in Ubuntu and hope he succeds for greater good of FOSS and he's done tons of good as well most important IMO "brought pre-installed linux desktops to market" , infact lot more than i can say here.
and there's RedHat they are prolific upstream contributors , they hire a lot of developers.
@BitaminaTek there buisness model is pragmatic (some may differ in opinion here) and like Troy Dawson of "Scientific Linux" said , they strive to protect the interests of open-source community and had taken to court if they had to. RedHat (IMHO , don't flame me here!!) has better understanding of FOSS than Canonical or ubuntu project.
Ubuntu folks try to win over hearts and Canonical is trying to make some bucks by that.(even if they had to compromise FOSS principles)
While Fedora people try to adhere to strictly to FOSS principles ,they want to be the showcase of latest and greatest and RedHat uses that and sells it to large enterprises,Unis etc and makes fat money and employs(pays them)lot of FOSS developers who drives the innovation.
@vadiethestar I would agree with you on the whole "Freedom = Fedora, Convenience = Ubuntu" thing... Except that Red Hat itself makes and sells closed source software. Which I have no problem with whatsoever. But they are -NOT- a 100% open source shop. And Fedora is funded (in large part) by Red Hat.
@BryanLunduke great, i got reply from bryan!!! , anyway if could point out some products from RedHat which are closed source(it may happen that they acquired something closed source , which they haven't open sourced yet) , i may agree ... and RHEL verbatim restriction is by the way copyright thing(part of their buisness model) but it doesn't keep us away free(as in beer) clone of RHEL like Scientifc Linux, Centos one from princeton university (i forgot the name) and recently ascendos ...
It saddens me that a lot of people are missing out on the "Linux experience" simply because they need all the latest games. If Wine doesn't cut it for you, just keep a Win partition, or a dedicated box, around just for games and use Linux for fast and secure everyday computing. I use Linux and I play the latest games... on my Wii, which for that matter might as well be a Windows box. Oh, and Fedora is pretty great:-)
Ahahhaha... loved the intro and Fedora hate in the show! I love the way you tell it as it is Brian.. Fedora is really a sad excuse for a Linux distro.
@RapidTechTuts Actually I have used it... its no good as a desktop distro for any home user. So what exciting features are coming up for Fedora 16.. hmm? Grub2 or maybe updated software? Exciting stuff indeed! :P If you exclude the upgraded software Fedora has done nothing to give you new features.
Oh god ChriBrisan, you guys just made me love Linux in a whole new light now :D Time to go see if most of my current Windows games play well enough on my Linux OS install, and finally be free of Windows 90% of the time :D
I was just thinkin, it will be great to have hardware that can run opensource applications and linux os with no drivers problems and so on... If u'll kno of any please inform me...desktop, loptop, tablet, etc
@mickeysmiles1 It doesn't always depend on the hardware if your applications crashes or not.
But the correct drivers that's been made for that particular hardware.
But if you are looking for something that has been made specificity for linux use, you should go for either ASUS or HP. Also, I think you should check out linuxhcl . com.
PlayonLinux has a major bug with not being able to log into steam which has been around for well over a year that I am aware of.... pain in the butt...
@Linux4UnMe Then you are running the classic release of steam under wine 1.1.43. Try to install the official release under wine 1.3.24. But that version has an annoying icon glitch in gnome 3. But at least that one has a workaround. Simply create a bash script for Steam, put it in your /usr/bin folder and create a shortcut to it. The icon should be in your home/user/.local/icons folder.
I only use windows for running elder scroll Oblivion. If I could find a way for my crappy PC to run it inder Ubuntu 10.10 windows=bye bye. Will give playonlinux and the others a try. Thanks for the info.
Elite for PC & Reach For The Stars for Amiga, would be some great games from the 80-90's to play again.
Aaa memories, good games back then and graphics didn't matter because you didn't have a choice :)

@flockofdeagles is it a linux game or does it work under wine? and is it still under development or is it a canceled project?
blackoutworm 6 months ago
@blackoutworm It's a cross platform game that uses SDL and works on Windows, OSX, Linux and Haiku.
It still receives a lot of active development and it recently also incorporated multiplayer. Any fan of TTD should give it a go at least.
