@hanaporter sometimes it's how it is. I'm left handed so righties are easier because I dont practice against left handed fencers very often at all. It's a preference rly, some ppl find it easier, most don't however because they practice against righty-righty a lot
Sort of, what happens is as a lefty you'll learn to (primarily) fence righties, this means you'll get used to the openings on a righty, however you'll find against another lefty, you'll find you won't be able to do the same things. Essentially, you'll be used to fencing righties, lots of them, they won't be used to fencing you.
I'm in sort of the opposite situation, I'm right handed but the guy I fence most and my coach is a lefty, so I'm used to fencing lefties in the same way.
@chippy922 There are less lefties in fencing than rightys. With enough practice, the advantages become negligible. But many fencers who start of fencing have difficulties with lefties.
Right-handed fencer must change their style of fencing when they face left-handed fencers. Left-handed fencers are not common, so they have a clear advantage. For me it's like this at least.
the french style instead is more upon intercepting the rival's blade by hitting & deflecting it round with a circle movement ( in french " cavitation" ) and then attacking. So it's exactly the opposite of what in ur comment : Italian style is suited to get more directly to the target in any assault , the french one instead is based upon continuous moves of the blade everywhere
you seem not to have any idea of what you're talking about and your comment looks so bizarre D !
In fencing the 2 different styles were innitially due to the different type of grips and so to the different positions of fingers & nails in the various defence / attack moves . Generally talking the Italian style is much upon preparation - interception and counter attack ,
If we look at Olympics all time classification , we see Italy quite comfortably ahead of France , since 1952 in every Olympics ( out of the 1980 boycotted one) Italy has always been the main team , each time leading even by far France in won medals, so your statement of France being the best country for many years is really senseless and totally untrue , 'cos the best country has always been Italy .
Both countries avoid from taking seriously and competing at their best in womens sabre : they let it all to underdogs like usa , just to keep them happy and illuded to count something in Fencing ! ;-)
Funny seeing some "expert" from the USA who every so often makes bizarre & funny judgements when he probaly didn't even know fencing existed till a couple of days before ..... D !
" His win " was for the title of world champion in the most technical & difficult weapon inside fencing program .
Foil is fencing at its best , it's not like farcical womens sabre ( a weapon created to make weak countries like USA win 1 or 2 medals , so they would have quitted crying & being naughty 'cos they couldn't win anything in fencing ) which is
the fencing for primitives with clubs .
In the major fencing countries Italy & France woemns sabre is considered a joke , a fake weapon .
France showed the technics... and was the best country for many years, but seem like italy has been performing a different style of fencing and it's working great for them.
We practice the french style, which consist in moving the point only, not the italian style, where they do lots of flicks and move their arm everywhere.
