@Homer101010 Okay good for you, but remember that Windows 8 is coming for ARM too. I'm a nix user myself, have nothing running Windows. BUT that does not change the fact that MS is in their every right to produce whatever they like to, like it or not. and you don't that's why you moved nix, that's the truth.. I'm nix too, but to be honest most people I know would not know how to operate it, to the mainstream user, nix isn't that good yet, believe it or not.. And, yes I have, it's not 8088s..

Did you miss the whole "antitrust" thing over the last 15 years, or the part where Microsoft was recently exposed (yet again) as a bunch of morally-bankrupt thugs by Barnes & Noble?
Consumers have earned the right to hate Microsoft.
@Homer101010 but seriously calm down, I'm not saying replace all your computers EVERY time Microsoft goes one version up, but if your computing power is 30 year old computers, it might be the time for a change whether you are using GNU/Linux, Microsoft or Mac
There's far too much of this upgrade-hysteria in our consumerism-obsessed society, when in fact most of it is completely unnecessary, and is often actually counter-productive.
@Homer101010 It is, I wouldn't think of a 30 year old processor as "reliable" to do critical work, seriously those processors are steady, but if it breaks no one would wonder why.. YES it is a mass hysteria about upgrade (desktop end), it's true, but if you have a better idea to produce a MS Windows buster OS, then be my guest. That you yell about the problem and doing nothing else to solve it makes you a hippocrate. DO some bugfixing instead, nix actually let's you do that!
This is about more than just "30 year old processors", it's about marketing pressure to upgrade ANY hardware just for the sake of a bloated but unnecessary software "upgrade", that is in fact the very antithesis of an "upgrade", except in the sense of it upgrading Microsoft's bank account.
None of my hardware is Vista/7 capable. Very little of it is even x86 compatible. But it all WORKS exactly the way I need it to. So WTF should I "upgrade" it with Microsoft's bloated garbage?
@thousandfootkrutchro I agree. UNIX is the mother and the father of all OS-es. It's why it serves as a standard for the last 40 years. Windows, OS X and other *NIX like systems are just the expression of human creativity based on UNIX system model.
"Unix (officially trademarked as UNIX, sometimes also written as Unix) is a multitasking, multi-user computer operating system originally developed in 1969 by a group of AT&T employees at Bell Labs, including Ken Thompson, Dennis Ritchie, Brian Kernighan, Douglas McIlroy and Joe Ossanna. The Unix operating system was first developed in assembly language, but by 1973 had been almost entirely recoded in C" ~ Wikipedia.
You mean the "Single UNIX Specification" or POSIX.
Have you stopped reading after the first paragraph? Do you even know what SUS is? Let's quote wikipedia, shall we? "The Single UNIX Specification (SUS) is the collective name of a family of standards for computer operating systems to qualify for the name 'Unix'.". Just because there is an original Unix system and branches thereof, this doesn't mean Unix is just that code. All systems following the concept can be called Unix. Such as OS X, no original code, just concept (+cash).
You said "UNIX is a concept, not code," not "UNIX is a concept AND code," therefore your assertion was bullshit.
It's the same semantically incorrect gibberish as "Linux is an operating system" or "Ubuntu is Linux".
And "UNIX" isn't a concept either, that would be the "Single UNIX Specification" or POSIX, as I stated, and as confirmed in the Wikipedia article you half-read for the first time 5 hours ago. Not that I needed Wikipedia to confirm what I've known for a quarter century.
DOS was stolen from Gary Kildall's CP/M by Tim Paterson of Seattle Computer Products, renamed 86-DOS, then illegally sold to Microsoft, who then fraudulently rebranded it as MS-DOS.
See 86-DOS#Intellectual_property_dispute on Wikipedia.
I try to only use Free and Open source software not just Linux , In my opinion Linux is the best OS technically speaking but many people miss the broader importance of the Open source movement which Linux is a part of. It's not Microsoft vs Linux it's Free and Open software vs closed proprietary software which is important. Basically freedom vs tyranny.
@702dirtrider While I agree with your comment, I just wanted to point out that Linux isn't an OS. Linux is just the kernel which these free OS's are built on top of. That's why they can all be so radically different, Linux is just the brain. :)
"True 32-bit versions of Windows, starting with NT and including 2000, XP, and Vista, are not based on DOS." ~ Wikipedia.
Also note that the first 32-bit version of Windows was actually created by Dave Cutler's VMS team from DEC (hence VMS = WNT - 1), not Microsoft. Microsoft has been struggling to maintain the codebase ever since, which may account for why modern Windows is such a steaming pile of crap.
@mysteryloser24 The "Linux Kernel" and "Linux" are two different things. The term "Linux" is an umbreall term used to refer to the kernel and the userland together in a functional system, sometimes even referred to as GNU/Linux. Kernel developers don't even refer to the Linux kernel as "Linux" - they just call it "the kernel".
No, "Linux" is just an operating system kernel. Saying the "Linux Kernel" is redundant, like saying "the kernel for the kernel". The "umbreall(sic) term" you refer to is bogus, a fallacy perpetuated by ignorant people. Calling a distro like Ubuntu "Linux" is like calling a car an "engine". Linux is just a single part of an OS called "GNU/Linux". Distros like Ubuntu comprise the GNU/Linux OS plus other Free Software.
You might as well call Ubuntu "Firefox" or "OpenOffice" instead.
@mysteryloser24 It depends on what you define as an OS. For some of us, we don't/can't/won't even install a desktop environment on some of the distros we work with. Most of them are just a custom configuration of a desktop environment and a few software packages installed anyway. The most common "base" distros: Debian, Red Hat, Gentoo, etc. will run almost all the same software so how is Linux not the appropriate generic name for all these distributions?
Even on minimal installs you need far more than just Linux to actually do anything beyond initialising the hardware. As a bare minimum you'll need Coreutils and various other GNU packages. In fact, in such a minimal system there's actually far more GNU in there than Linux.
Let's be clear, the OS *is* GNU. Linux is just one of many components. You may as well call the OS "OpenOffice" or "Firefox" as "Linux". It'd make just as little sense. At least GNU/Linux is half right.
@Homer101010 GNU is a license. It's is not an operating system. Also, there are many pieces of software under GNU that have absolutely nothing to do with building an operating system. Any distribution of a Linux operating system will have those packages already installed and configured "out of the box". While they are critical to running Linux, an operating system is not defined by the software built for it. Someone can come up with better packages that replace today's, and yet it's still Linux.
Dear God, the ignorance on GooTube is astounding. GNU is NOT a "license", you twit. The *GPL* is a license, *GNU* is an OPERATING SYSTEM.
Here, see for yourself: "The GNU Project was launched in 1984 to develop the GNU operating system, a complete Unix-like operating system which is free software ... GNU is often used with a kernel called Linux" ~ gnu.org
Let me say it again: Linux is a KERNEL, not an OS. The OS is GNU.
@didogazeto XP is the most user friendly system in the world. Just a pitty it is damn slow compared to linux/Ubuntu and you cannot uninstall IE the worst sh*t "browser" ever made.
i never had a problem with windows vista. When i installed windows 7 i wasn`t able to install servicepack1... so i had to reinstalll windows7 crap shit
@Tr4bant They did a good marketing job naming a patch "service pack". Like it is a "service" that the patch comes half a year later or so than the beta where it should have been fixed. It's a patch to the programmers making lots of mistakes, because they are not good enough, and it's making the OS shit bloated. Luckily I haven't had these "service packs" for a year, since I use Ubuntu/Mint. Linux is quite well programmed compared to windows.
@Homer101010 What I meant is a lot of people paid money for Vista and ended up going back to XP immediately. So they paid for nothing and should be compensated.
@Homer101010 Windows 7 is technically Vista service pack 1, but they couldn't release it as that name as no-one would have gotten it. Also look at the simularities. when looking up requirements Vista and Wind.7 are exactly the same.
@chype I agree with that. They should give out free upgrades to basically remove license cost as a reason to postpone an upgrade (too see if the new version is successful or not before buying the license). Vista is actually not bad if it's patched, but you shouldn't have to worry about getting stuck with "the previous version" of Windows a lot sooner than you expected. They should make this simple for the consumer, and just be glad that you're willing to pay for a legit license.
@clydefrog4963 I have build a Windows Computer using the same parts as a mac between 2000-3000 euro's (near to 3000), the hardware is exactly the same except it doesn't have the apple logo or certification. It costed me less then 1000 euro's to build it. The only thing I had different was the case (Coolermaster, good case). So either, the case or the Apple logo is extremely expensive. You tell me.
Microsoft choose to remove the ability to enable 2D acceleration in Vista, which is the main reason for it's slow- and laggyness. It must have been extremely embarrassing for the development team when they realized just how much they fucked up, this is why they pushed out Windows 7 so fast.
@HOBGOBLIN157 i still have windows xp on this very computer because there are some great games i like that can be played on windows xp and not 7, like driver 1 battlefield 1942 and need for speed underground 2
@dgenx210 And us Mac users don't like Windows snobs either. Believe me, they exist. You have to acknowledge that there are many Windows users that are pretty douchey when it comes to cutting down other platforms. I know there's snobby Mac users, but It's ignorant to not mention that Windows supports can be snobby too.
Okay microsoft is .... In OS, sucks in xbox apple rules OS customer satisfaction rules the smart phone/mp3(4) market medium in the music selling(?) market lets see the big picture
No offence, but the human race made music for millennia without ever "selling" it, and continues to do so today (google for "creative commons music"). If the media Mafia went bankrupt tomorrow, we'd still be making music, and probably much better than the garbage that passes for music in the so-called "charts" today.
And why the fuck they sell an unfinised windows7. There are a lot's of "offline" updates,GDR and LDR that make the 7 more faster, but no speed improve from the "official" updates. Actualy the speed look's lower. And there all soo are pictures on the internet with a test version off windows 7 build 7700. So why the fuck are we paying a lot of money for an unfinised windows. And when the fuck will they make an windows that it's not needing updates any more.
Software is written by humans, humans are fallible, therefore /all/ software has flaws, and require updates. This includes Mac OS X and GNU/Linux, BTW.
However, WRT things which are /sold/ for profit, as with Microsoft Windows, I feel there is a case under consumer law that commercial software (regardless of license) /should/ be "fit for purpose", just like any other goods.
But IMHO and IME Windows is /not/ fit for purpose, unless that "purpose" is being a zombie in a Botnet, of course.
No, the reason is because Microsoft runs a global racketeering operation which excludes nearly all competition. And if you don't believe that statement then read this:
{quote}
Gateway also faulted another provision of the new licensing agreement, which requires PC makers to pay a Windows royalty on every PC shipped, even if it didn't include Windows
{quote}
Google for "Gateway exec: Microsoft too powerful" CNet article.
Also compare this to the recent racketeering Microsoft did with HTC, demanding "royalty payments" for HTC selling Google Android phones!!!
What the fcuk business is it of those arrogant gangsters whether HTC sells Android phones or not? Android is nothing to do with them, and their unsubstantiated claims of patents are just bull.
If Microsoft really has patents on Android or anything else related to Linux, then is there some reason they just can't say what they are?
@Homer101010 umm, HTC payed them those as patent licensing fees so that MS won't sue them the same way Apple did. It dsnt mean that windows is full of shit but means that Android infringes on some of Windows Patents and HTC payed them to avoid more trouble so that they can concentrate all their legal power in facing the threats that new tech dictator Apple poses to them, google and other new age companies
It's precisely the claim that "Android infringes on some of Windows Patents" which is "full of shit". If that claim is true, then lets see some actual patent numbers.
That fat sweaty liar Ballmer said the same about Linux, and we've yet to see any actual patent documents relating to his libellous claims.
So what are Microsoft afraid of, that they can't just explicitly state exactly which patents Linux and Android supposedly "infringe"?
@Homer101010 Microsoft is an evil corp , no one can deny that but if HTC payed them royalties then i am sure there is something concrete about it because if HTC can stand upto apple then they surely can tackle microsoft. but really , MS dissing is a thing of past, Apple dissing is the new cool, so I diss apple, but anyways, i bet you'd agree
Note that it was only /after/ HTC sold their souls to Microsoft that they "stood up to" Apple, or IOW they are now part of the Redmond goons' protection racket.
And to describe this as "dissing" is offensive. Microsoft are corporate gangsters, not naughty children. This will only be a thing of the past when Microsoft are.
@devilzworkshop well, if i had to choose sides between apple and MS then MS wld be it, because MS is an evil corp that tried to be a monoply, but apple is an evil corp trying to create human slaves by offering them no choices, that's what i think, but yeah, they are evil they are bad, it's just a personal choice of what side u r on
I've already chosen a side, and it's not the one that either Microsoft or Apple are on. I've chosen the side that doesn't support corporate gangsterism.

Or they could just switch to GNU/Linux, which has had proper terminal shells for the last 20 years.
Homer101010 2 months ago
@Homer101010 but seriously calm down, I'm not saying replace all your computers EVERY time Microsoft goes one version up, but if your computing power is 30 year old computers, it might be the time for a change whether you are using GNU/Linux, Microsoft or Mac
LongJohnOlsen 2 months ago
@LongJohnOlsen
Maybe, but age alone is no justification.
There's far too much of this upgrade-hysteria in our consumerism-obsessed society, when in fact most of it is completely unnecessary, and is often actually counter-productive.
If it ain't broke...
Homer101010 2 months ago
@Homer101010 It is, I wouldn't think of a 30 year old processor as "reliable" to do critical work, seriously those processors are steady, but if it breaks no one would wonder why.. YES it is a mass hysteria about upgrade (desktop end), it's true, but if you have a better idea to produce a MS Windows buster OS, then be my guest. That you yell about the problem and doing nothing else to solve it makes you a hippocrate. DO some bugfixing instead, nix actually let's you do that!
LongJohnOlsen 2 months ago
@LongJohnOlsen
Homer101010 2 months ago
@thousandfootkrutchro I agree. UNIX is the mother and the father of all OS-es. It's why it serves as a standard for the last 40 years. Windows, OS X and other *NIX like systems are just the expression of human creativity based on UNIX system model.
mutantkeyboard 2 months ago
@thousandfootkrutchro UNIX is a concept, not code. You pay to let your OS be certified as a UNIX System.
81kingtut 2 months ago
@81kingtut
Bullshit.
Homer101010 2 months ago
@Homer101010
81kingtut 2 months ago
@81kingtut

702dirtrider 5 months ago 2
@702dirtrider While I agree with your comment, I just wanted to point out that Linux isn't an OS. Linux is just the kernel which these free OS's are built on top of. That's why they can all be so radically different, Linux is just the brain. :)

@Sursari

Homer101010 2 months ago
@mysteryloser24 The "Linux Kernel" and "Linux" are two different things. The term "Linux" is an umbreall term used to refer to the kernel and the userland together in a functional system, sometimes even referred to as GNU/Linux. Kernel developers don't even refer to the Linux kernel as "Linux" - they just call it "the kernel".
jon780 2 months ago
@jon780
Homer101010 2 months ago
@mysteryloser24 It depends on what you define as an OS. For some of us, we don't/can't/won't even install a desktop environment on some of the distros we work with. Most of them are just a custom configuration of a desktop environment and a few software packages installed anyway. The most common "base" distros: Debian, Red Hat, Gentoo, etc. will run almost all the same software so how is Linux not the appropriate generic name for all these distributions?
radicalgarbage02 2 months ago
@radicalgarbage02
Homer101010 2 months ago
@Homer101010 GNU is a license. It's is not an operating system. Also, there are many pieces of software under GNU that have absolutely nothing to do with building an operating system. Any distribution of a Linux operating system will have those packages already installed and configured "out of the box". While they are critical to running Linux, an operating system is not defined by the software built for it. Someone can come up with better packages that replace today's, and yet it's still Linux.
radicalgarbage02 2 months ago
@radicalgarbage02
Period.
If you want to replace GNU then - good luck.

Tr4bant 6 months ago
@Tr4bant They did a good marketing job naming a patch "service pack". Like it is a "service" that the patch comes half a year later or so than the beta where it should have been fixed. It's a patch to the programmers making lots of mistakes, because they are not good enough, and it's making the OS shit bloated. Luckily I haven't had these "service packs" for a year, since I use Ubuntu/Mint. Linux is quite well programmed compared to windows.

ASSASSINGAMESuk 3 months ago
@chype I agree with that. They should give out free upgrades to basically remove license cost as a reason to postpone an upgrade (too see if the new version is successful or not before buying the license). Vista is actually not bad if it's patched, but you shouldn't have to worry about getting stuck with "the previous version" of Windows a lot sooner than you expected. They should make this simple for the consumer, and just be glad that you're willing to pay for a legit license.

KEEVVY 1 year ago
Software is written by humans, humans are fallible, therefore /all/ software has flaws, and require updates. This includes Mac OS X and GNU/Linux, BTW.
However, WRT things which are /sold/ for profit, as with Microsoft Windows, I feel there is a case under consumer law that commercial software (regardless of license) /should/ be "fit for purpose", just like any other goods.
But IMHO and IME Windows is /not/ fit for purpose, unless that "purpose" is being a zombie in a Botnet, of course.

Botnet? That is why Microsoft owns a huge chunk of the server market and 90% of the desktop market. Cool story bro.

No, the reason is because Microsoft runs a global racketeering operation which excludes nearly all competition. And if you don't believe that statement then read this:
{quote}
Gateway also faulted another provision of the new licensing agreement, which requires PC makers to pay a Windows royalty on every PC shipped, even if it didn't include Windows
{quote}
Google for "Gateway exec: Microsoft too powerful" CNet article.
Read the whole article.
Microsoft are gangsters.
Homer101010 1 year ago
Also compare this to the recent racketeering Microsoft did with HTC, demanding "royalty payments" for HTC selling Google Android phones!!!
What the fcuk business is it of those arrogant gangsters whether HTC sells Android phones or not? Android is nothing to do with them, and their unsubstantiated claims of patents are just bull.
If Microsoft really has patents on Android or anything else related to Linux, then is there some reason they just can't say what they are?
They're full ot sh*t.
Homer101010 1 year ago
@Homer101010 umm, HTC payed them those as patent licensing fees so that MS won't sue them the same way Apple did. It dsnt mean that windows is full of shit but means that Android infringes on some of Windows Patents and HTC payed them to avoid more trouble so that they can concentrate all their legal power in facing the threats that new tech dictator Apple poses to them, google and other new age companies
devilzworkshop 1 year ago
@devilzworkshop
Is it a secret?
They're gangsters.
Homer101010 1 year ago
@Homer101010 Microsoft is an evil corp , no one can deny that but if HTC payed them royalties then i am sure there is something concrete about it because if HTC can stand upto apple then they surely can tackle microsoft. but really , MS dissing is a thing of past, Apple dissing is the new cool, so I diss apple, but anyways, i bet you'd agree
OPEN SOURCE ROCKS \m/
devilzworkshop 1 year ago

Note that it was only /after/ HTC sold their souls to Microsoft that they "stood up to" Apple, or IOW they are now part of the Redmond goons' protection racket.
And to describe this as "dissing" is offensive. Microsoft are corporate gangsters, not naughty children. This will only be a thing of the past when Microsoft are.
Homer101010 1 year ago
@devilzworkshop well, if i had to choose sides between apple and MS then MS wld be it, because MS is an evil corp that tried to be a monoply, but apple is an evil corp trying to create human slaves by offering them no choices, that's what i think, but yeah, they are evil they are bad, it's just a personal choice of what side u r on
