Actually no, if you're talking about the Ellis Island thing or earlier, but after we became our own country. They turned away lots of people. Actually the south was far less developed *because* of slave labor. Free white labor couldn't compete with slave labor, that's why there were so fewer immigrants to the south. That's also why the south lost the civil war, so much less development. That's not to say blacks, the Chinese and others didn't make big contributions to building this country.

I'm gonna have to disagree with Cenk for the first time. Although he's right about stopping these employers, we have to think about the consequences of this approach. You're talking about millions of immigrants who have been in these country for years, now what do you do with over 10 million of unemployed immigrants? Now you may argue they can go back to their countries but that means, millions of households empty from landlords who depend on this people to pay their mortgages, empty schools,etc

That 20% statistic includes "discouraged" workers, people working part-time and temporary jobs, and people who aren't actively seeking employment. In some cities, the unemployment is around 20%, though.
