This is typical. Where I leave, there are several Japanese-based companies. When the Japanese representatives leave, they toss just about everything purchased State-side. I was told that the did this to avoid paying taxes on the these purchases.

I think maybe the reason people throw away a lot of good things is because space is limited in some of those houses in Japan. It must be easier to find things in the Japanese trash as they separate items into different sections. When I was there I got a kick out of the garbage trucks and how they play instructions to throwing trash away over a loud speaker.
