Atlas was overrated and did keep a lot of secrets to himself. A lot of people have made amazing gains in their training thanks to Dynamic Tension, granted it wasn't the only thing he did. That could be said with any old time strong man.
Actually, this isn't the whole footage. He was demonstrating the tearing of the book, yes. He really did do the tear, but put the pieces back together to show it wasn't a trick book or anything like some strongmen who used to use them. They used to break wood and bricks that were already broke too. Charles Atlas was the real deal. You should see the footage when he pulled the train.
@Whammer79 I spent what time I had available looking up Joe Rollino, and found him to be a pretty impressive guy. In all I could look at, I could only find a second-hand allegation that Rolliono charged Atlas with relying on weights (no direct quotes). On the other hand, Atlas' family, his neighbors, and bodybuilding legend Bill Pearl (who knew him) all asserted that they only saw him train with bodyweight exercises.
There is an audio interview that you can find online with Joe Rollino. In that interview he says that Atlas lifted weights. He says he had a trunk (storage trunk) full of dumbbells,. Google search "Joe Rollino Coney Island audio interview". It will bring up the link you need.
@Whammer79 Thanks, I will check out the interview you cited. Up to now, I've been of a mind that Charles Atlas was what he claimed to be - but though he did have genuine strength, perhaps all was not as it seemed. I'm always open to new evidence.
@Whammer79 As someone who personally uses isometrics and DT I can tell you that you're a moron. Charles Atlas did use weights in his career, but then stopped and only used DT. Isometrics and DT target and only target specific joint locations and someone who uses this gets larger, not necessarily stronger, than someone who trains with weights, you can tell by his physique changes that he did at one point use weights, then switched completely to DT. Stop trying to discredit a great man.
Glad you enjoy your workout program but don't make shit up about Atlas. The guy trained with weights and used them his entire life. He also ran and did calisthenics. His "course" was just a way to make MILLIONS of dollars. It is THE worse written and organized exercise program in history. And no one can argue differently.
He didn't use weights in his training but he did use them to conduct a 'test of strength' - he went to court over this and it was proven he did not use them as part of a routine.
This is an advertisement, wow factor sells. The same way rabbits don't come out of a bottle of fabric conditioner.
@vzx974 too true..you know i wonder if half the critics have even tried bodyweight exercise exclusively for 3-6months..coz I doubt it..you see i was a boxer yrs ago (amateur) and i know that bodyweight execise works coz thats all we ever did..in fact the warm up and warm downs were the worse part lol... so i do not doubt Atlas (weather he lifted ot not REGULARLY) or even John E. Peterson (as fanatical as he is) because i have felt the benefits....
easiest way to make money. weight lift, say u don't. than make up a program saying "i got this big and strong using dynamic tension" as if u can pull a train doing dynamic tension alone.
Almost anyone can tear a phone book in half -- there's a simple trick to it. There is no reason Atlas would have had to fake this, and as it has already been pointed out, he is shown doing it from another angle.
Atlas was soo hot. He's sexier than the roid' full of plastic bodies today-who are overbuilt that they look gross and disgusting. Charles Atlas had a perfect body-powerful, but entirely NATURAL.
Atlas did in fact use weights. However, the business he marketed was based on his "dynamic tension" system. Therein lay the confusion. The fact that he used weights makes him no less of a bodybuilding or personal training great. I will also add that he did not invent the exercises he preached by any means. But he was the first one to market them so widely and successfully.
dude, ripping up phone books is not that difficult, I can rip one up half that thickness.
A New York city sized phone book though no way. lol.
The atlas course does work though; doing his course half assedly, and with no weights, eventually I became strong enough to rip in half a phone book half as thick as that one.
Its not that hard; if your grip gets stronger you'd be shocked.
Wanker79 you are a looser, you take an outtake from a newsreel from the 40's to try and discredit Atlas, who's already proven his worth to history, what have you ever done aside from being pathetic
He ripped phone books in half, in front of people, that is a verified fact. you cant expect him to rip one in half for every take of this film, it could have taken 20 - 30 takes to get it right, so he used a prop in a film, big deal, proves nothing
Light weights based on sport like movements, and what u are calling dynamic tension is the use of machines that they use to work oposing muscle like in the video, is not the same thing forsteyk and peterson teach.
Using the machines they use allow them to work there muscles a lot harder, because of leverage and the light weights they add 2 it.
Go watch the Paulomus u tube video, and after that come back and try to explain how that is the same as DT.
Fixedgear im not sure if your mentally retarded or what. Your statement i lose big time on this one, makes me question your perception of reality.
One my statement that jimmy lifts weights is true, and u said it was true too, so why argue the point. I dont care if it was just for football, and that he did the other crap, before that. Point is he lifts weights.
2nd Marinovich work out system is not based on freaking dynamic tension, its primarly based on the use of light weights.
Yes they do use light weights, but also utilize balance and isometrics into the training. The trend is starting to turn away from heavy weights and exercises like the bench press, towards football and sport movement exercises. Forseytk has adapted his system to include sprinting and running and I believe that component is essential to this type of trainiing. It is the missing component to Atlas' training approach. It is also why Forsteyk's program is so succesful as a football prep.
i remember seeing where they said they trained a college track team guess what someone contacted the college track coach he never heard of them and u say look at the trophies so? lots of us have trophies from grade school high school and look at his pic on his site his gut hang over his belt if hes in such good shape why the baggy shirt in his book his sons demo the exercise
If it works so good how come Forsteyk own son jimmy lifts weights for football , and thats jimmys own words from him on there powerflex forums.
And Troy Palomalus work out is not the same as the crap Peterson and Forsteyk teach he uses machines for his workouts that give great leverage and light weights added to those machines.
So saying that petersons and forsteyk traning is the new wave is freaking insane, considering the examples u gave dont even use what your promoting.
No, Jim used weights once he got to the school. It was an esrablished regimine. Prior to that, he trained with his dad's routine all of his life. And we can go ask him if you like. Palomalu does use BW and DT like training, as does Marinovich, a great trainer for athletes and former all pro. Also Big Jim himself is a football player who won mant trophies, check his website. You lose this one big time.
As a final note on immigration; Yes I agree with you - we DO need immigrants. But let's be a little more selective about where we take them from. We need better health screening, better background checks and emphasise that we expect Canada's laws, institutions, culture and way of life to be accepted and respected, not opposed because they aren't "inclusive" enough for those who want everything to change just to suit their own language, culture and religion.
I think the bottom line here is - whether Atlas trained with weights or not is irrelevant to the millions of successful students that he had. They are happier, healthier, stronger and a lot more muscular than before. The course works, as does John peterson'e training methods. They won't turn you into a Mr. Olympia, but you'll get great results just the same.
I didn't say specifically that Atlas developed his physique with cables. I merely said that he helped out Leiderman by allowing his photo in the brochure. Atlas experimented with cables, pulleys, home-made barbell as a teenager. He sold the cables later to make money to support his young family. And he even wrote this himslef in Physical Culture magazine, which is on the Sandow Plus website for all to read. he also stated that non-apparatus exercises gave him the best results.
Bill, You lose credibility on an almost daily basis. You're credentials are bogus, as is your area of study. On many sites across the internet you are considered a FRAUD. Of course this might explain your interest in Atlas- takes one to know one.
Well it does matter Bill. It matters because many people are being misled even today about DT. They have been fooled into believing that Atlas developed his body by using DT.
I claim he used weights and you claim he used CABLES and BW. We may not agree on what he used, but we agree on what he didn't use, and he didn't use DT.
Dave- what I'm saying is, third world immigration will destroy Canada. There are ethnic gangs that would not have existed had Pierre Trudeau not opened up the country to the Third World. Of course there are law abiding citizens of ethnic backgrounds - I never said there wasn't. Our immigration policy is a joke and is letting in people with potentially fatal disases. Diseases, I might add, that were eradicated in the 50's. But hey! let's all die from bubonic plague while being "inclusive."
I'm no Trudeau fan- I think he harmed this country, but not because of immigration.
The truth is Bill we need immigration in order for our country to grow.
Are people coming in that have TB and other diseases? Yes, but that's not the fault of immigration per se. We need to do more to ensure these people are treated before entering the country, or that they get treated as soon as they enter.
A black friend of mine has offered to arrange a speaking engagement for you in North Philly- he thinks it's very important for get your views out there and enlighten people.
Yes, Atlas trained with cables as a young man. he demostrated and sold them for a living for a few moths before beinig hired on as a fitness model for Physical Culture magazine, He endored Liedermans course of bodyweight exercises and the use of cables to help Leiderman with sales. Albeit he used his real name, Angelo Sixiliano. He DID NOT endorse any of Leidermans books on lifting weights.
So Atlas lied in order to deceive the public and help Liedernan sell courses!
So if he would lie to help someone else make money it would stand to reason that he would lie in order to make money for himself. That he would lie about not liftiing weights.
And you've now admitted that Atlas used cables and BW exercise to develop himself and not Dynamic Tension.
Racist hate? I am deeply concerning about Canada becoming a dumping ground for 250,000 third world immigrants a year. If you approve of Toronto becoming a third world Ghetto, ethnic gangs shooting up our streets, huge numbers of immigrants who take advantage of our social safety net but refuse to integrate or learn to speak English, one has to wonder who the "racists" really are.
I have a copy of the letter that Tilney wrote to David Gentle in 1977 stating he wrote the Atlas course - so there never was any dispute there.
Atlas was already well developed when he met Liederman in 1917. Leiderman used cables as part of his course, not weights. Atlas appeared in the brochure to boost sales.
Like Weider, Hoffman and others, Joe Rollo has no proof that Atlas was a weight lifter.
Get over this Dave, Atlas has been dead since 1972. Does it really matter now?
Most people do not know that Tilney wrote the course, they believe Atlas wrote it based on the exercises he did. But since TILNEY wrote it how could it be the exercises Atlas used?
Liederman trained used weights as well- he even wrote books about training with them.
Are you saying Atlas LIED when he gave his endorsement of Liederman's course?
That he lied when he said that he owes his development to Liedernan's course?
One just needs to view your Youtube comments page to see this. You've been a very busy boy- visiting other Youtube videos and posting your racist hate on the internet.
i forgot - Dave. There are university professors and forensic experts who accept recent dinosaur survival and the possibility of a rare bipedal ape living in the Pacific NW. Are they nutters too?
MrPrimalman - I did not call you a moron but stated that your claim was "moronic." I also stated that your claim that Atlas was too fat be a decent runner "fat" was "daft." How did you know that Atlas was not able to run 10 miles in under one hour? You weren't there. And this was 1937- so why the arguing about it NOW in 2009?
And as I have already offered - please give me your statement on Atlas & running and I will be happy to post it on the BronzeBow forum for you with my own answer.
Wrong- Atlas built his body using weights and was a student of Earle Liederman. In fact we have Atlas stating this very fact in an Liederman advertisement.
Atlas didn't train with weights.
Lie. As already shown he developed his body with weights and Liederman's course. Joe Rollino's audio recording states that Atlas lifted.
Mr. Walmsely - back again? I take you are referring to my appearance on the History Channel last night? Yes, I traveled to Africa with a film crew and helped to produce a one hour documentary for the series - MonsterQuest. Ah yes, the international travel, all those paid expenses, the book sales, the TV and radio interviews. At least I'm enjoying life, regardless of my beliefs or what others think of them. So why don't you run along and find something useful to do?
i received PMs these people believe atlas ran 10 miles in less than 1 hour in his 40s
atlas was +30lbs heavier than a real runer a competitve runer in his 40s-not national class-runs sub 60 min but atlas way heavier but could run this fast
bad case of believing fairy tales then lying about someone to make urself look good
Can u imagine if a pro football team gave up there weights and machines, and did the atlas system, they would be in last place with out a doubt.
And there lies the problem fixedgearrider, u again made a point of saying that u could achive the same if not better results using DT, than weight training.
All i gota say is go to any gym in the usa, and u will find someone bigger stronger, than jp or any of his goons.
On the contrary, All Pro Troy Palomalu of the Steelers uses a training modality similar to Dynamic Tension. Others in the sport, such as trainers Marinovich and Forsteyk have used this type of training, specifically for the sport. As I said earlier, it is the new wave in training!
it is very disapointing the person who complained about the profanity went on jon petersons board and called me a moron and daft i told him atlas lied about running 10 miles
people who run 10 miles arent fat like atals was or even as big as atlas he would have crippled himself anyone who knows about running would know u would tear urself up running 10 miles if you weighed a lot
I did not come here to defend peterson or Forstek, just to state that Atlas was not a fraud and his system although outdated, is viably being carried on today by them. Sorry if this set you off, but it is the truth.
I like Atlas, I don't think he was a bad guy. But his "system" is not really his system. He did not develop it, nor did he use it to develop his body. I'm sorry if you can't accept the true history about Atlas. As an exercise method DT is fine but there are better ways to work out and condition your body- but you can include some DT exercises as well.
So we have video proof here of Atlas pretending to rip a phonebook in half that is already ripped in half and you are saying that Atlas was not a fraud?
If you are looking for bodybuilding physiques, it is a well known fact that as Vince Gironda has said, diet is 90% of the equation. Using Dynamic Tension with Clarence Bass' Ripped Diet, will produce results safer and at least as good if not better than weights. Look at John or the Forsteks. It is also a fact that some well built physiques were made using a just a jump rope or sprinting routine with strict dieting.
I don't think he's looking for "bodybuilding" physiques- just a reasonably fit body.
To keep referring to JP or the Forsteks is misguided. They claim to be world class trainers- therefor the proof is in their students, that is how they should be judged. And based upon that their courses are a failure.
Google P90X and you'll see AMAZING results that are being obtained by THOUSANDS of people! The results that people are getting from that course is PROOF of it's effectiveness.
How come if this system is so great, most the people that do it look like crap. Just go to the transformetrics body building gallery, lol 90% of those guys look sub par to say the least.
And im not saying u have to look like a steroid freak, but these claims of dynamic tension and iso;s being superior is a flat out lie.
If you want to see results, click on John Peterson's Videos and then ask yourself if he is for real! As for Jim, he trains for performance not appearance. His training ios gearred to produce athletic performance as both his sons and others are football players, one of tehm at the collegiate level. And Jim still participates in a local football league at his age. I don't say weights are totally bad, but for longevity in training, Forstyk and Peterson are miles ahead of the norm.
Have you even checked any of your facts before you opened your mouth??
I checked in Big Jim's boy and he played ZERO games for his college team in his final year of football, the year before that he played in a couple of games BUT only for a few plays!!! The kid was a bench warmer!!
No TOP athlete uses their system, nor do they use JP's. What do they use? WEIGHTS!
As for JP, he does nothing that THOUSANDS of others can't do. Nothing impressive about him. Just lots of lies and hype.
Really....thousands of 56 year old men can do pull ups like him? You need to release this hate for him and the Atlas methods and embrace a positive, open mind on this. Look at the clips!!!
No, you said thousands of others can do what Peterson does. I replied "Thousands of 56 year old men can do pullups like him? I didn't say he could do 56 pullups! Check the U Tube clip. I think he does 25-30 easily. Everyone with an open mind is impressed.
No problem. I understand what you are saying, but I don't argue that intelligent weight lifting will get great results as you have achieved. But the proof is that the Atlas methods work without weights. Peterson does the pullups without touching free weights. His combination on Advanced Dynamic Tension, isometrics, bodyweight and aerobic exercises produce results as it is plain to see. So let it stand that both methods work. Dynamic Tension methods just require more of the mind-body connection.
Why have you come here to defend JP when JP was never even being discussed?
You act like you truly know what JP does during his workouts. But you really don't.
His story had changed MANY times over the years.
Just like how he healed his shoulder injury keeps changing. It's all based upon whatever he's trying to sell to you.
Your assertion that DT requires more of a mind-body connection is not true either. You don't think your mind needs to be fully engaged if you're lifting heavy weights?
Your Forum? You have a forum? For what... an anti-Dynamc Tension sounding board? I got a preview of what kind of people must be on there just by reading the posts on this thread replete with name calling and baseless accusations! Besides, I don't know the website.
fixedgearrrider is just another of JPs halekons who just uses opportunities like these to spam the internet for his master but not address the issue of this video which is the phonebook was ALREADY RIPPED IN HALF and ATLAS was FAKING IT!
If "Atlas could tear a phone book in two easily" then why would he fake it?
Mr. Atlas' course would be considered outdated today, but the theory of mind- body training is being successfully developed by those visonary trainers I previously mentioned. I believe there were some here who are detractors of the system, but a video of John Peterson showing the incredible level of strength and fitness he achieved is a just a click away. None can question the results he gets from his training as he never touches a freeweight, yet can outperform people years younger than he.
just read about a thrd of the new book about mcfadden the whole atlas bit was a scam from the start get the book at your library or bookstore youll know that anyone who heroworships these people are ignorant
"bernarr mcfadden, american physical culture mogul" it talks about how mcfadden rigged the atlas contest
la times newspaper :""the German martial ideal held an unshakable grip" on Macfadden. Benito Mussolini was a personal hero, and after they met in Europe in 1930, Macfadden agreed to train 40 Italian cadets on U.S. soil. He told a reporter, "There are times when I believe that America needs a Mussolini, as never before."
Atlas' methods were years ahead of the times. Only now, trainers like John Peterson and Jim Forstyk are bringing them to the next level. Using the mind to simulate the resistance of weights, in applied exercise techniques, will be the next level of human achievement that can be attained. And yes, Atlas could tear a phone book in two easily.
this guy sounds just like andy who used to talk aoubt using kettlebells and soloflex and forusteks book is just the atlas course with his boys posing the guy is clearly overweight out of shape wears baggy clothes to hide his gut nothing new about this stuff including the bs
fixedgearrider like an indoor kmart exercise bike?
Id like to see the results of these so called superior methods. 90% of the people that ive seen that only do john petersons methods look like shit. According to his bodybulding picture gallery.
And lol jim forstyk wont even take his shirt off, look at the cover of his book his gut is hanging over his belt.
Oh and dont even say his sons builds are all from powerflex, they LIFT WEIGHTS, jimmy forstyk even said he did on there powerflex site. He lifts weights for football.
I dunno, he seemed pretty upfront about the real life history of charles Atlas. Was was he hiding something? He came to as pretty straight forward about it, but telling him to fuck off wasn't smart at all.
Well he was only more upfront once we showed we knew the real details of Atlas' life. Without that he would've been posting the usual bullshit.
I told him to fuck off because foul language is allowed on Youtube. I'm not trying to win any friends. He came here issuing a challenge- a challenge that HE seems unwilling to accept himself.
Bill considers himself an expert on Atlas- yet he basically flogs the comic stories about Atlas. That type of stuff doesn't do anyone any good.
But it's pretty funny that he comes on here and posts a challenge to me- asking me to rip a phone book in half. Then he tells me to stop posting comments if I can't stop swearing. Well this is MY video upload. So I can do what I want.
As for being upfront about Atlas...no he hasn't. It's only when we've got him in lies that he starts to come clean. Without the comments from myself and others, people would be getting deceived.
Whammer79 - you still haven't told me your real name. I imagine its because you don't have the courage. As for not bringing out my course, I'm engaged in documentary making for the History Channel as well as running my own business. In others words, I have a life. My course will be out in good time. And there will be medals and cash prizes to win too.
BTW, I own a security guard and private investigator agency here in Calgary. Where are you?
Because I'm a busy man and do not depend on selling muslces to make my living. Why don't YOU bring out a course? Sorry I forgot, you don't have a brain.
You object to my use of foul language and call me immature. But now YOU resort to name calling and insults- oh that's really mature of you.
Just like Atlas and your pal JP- you too are a complete phoney.
The reason your course is not out yet is....it's just a rip off of the Atlas course. And JP and Big Jim have beaten you to the market with their own rip off courses.
Post some pictures or video on Youtube and let's see the results your course has produced?
Unlike you Whammer79, I have a life. I run my own successful (and growing business), I travel internationally, have two published books under my belt ( a third due out in August), aheva fantastic family and enjoy life to the full.
In fact, I'm in my office right now working on a pretty big contract, while taking a break to muse on your limited mental ability to reply to my posts without profanity. Go on, try it - it doesn't hurt.
So you "hate people like me?" another immature comment from a 50 year old. You must have a lot of time on your hands, posting on here every few minutes. Do you actually work for a living? What are YOUR acheivements in life?
In closing, i will say this much. Regardless of what you think, no matter what you and others say about him, Charles Atlas has inspired generations of men - young and old - to live healthier, more productive lives. His course has stood the test of time and has produced countless students who have achieved outstanding results.
Your most recent posts are needlessly repeatative. I have answered all your points openly and truthfully. If you don't like it, that's your problem.
Another immature, abusive and totally retarded outburst. Your profile says you are 50! is this how you conduct yourself? I post factual commernts about Atlas and his history, and you accuse me of "covering up." if you despise the man so much, why post his videos? Don't give me this "its a free country" line. Atlas has been dead since 1972. You obviously hate the man with a passion to cvontinue with this debate.
No Bill, I hate people like you! Folks that think they can tell other people what to do.
I posted this video and I'm free to say what I want.
I notice you disabled the comments on the Atlas video that you posted, why? Afraid of the truth? Do you only want to let people see YOUR version of the truth?
Going back to the original course - Tilney provided the health and nutritional information as he was a naturopathic physician. Atlas provided the exercises and workout routines. It was an even partnership. Even if Atlas did advize nude sunbathing, he certainly wasn't the only one, and this was a popular fad in the 1920s and 1930's. Did that make him a pervert or pedophile?
If I wanted to "cover up" the truth about Atlas, I wouldn't be posting these details, now would I? When he won his title in 1922, there were several international competitors involved. The judges at that time including the scientists and physicians who examined and measured the competitors, concluded that Atlas was not only America's best, but arguably the world's finest physique at that time.
You're like the other Blowtards- stupid! You blindly follow all this shit and are too stupid to know that you've put your own foot into your mouth. You've been trapped with your own words.
The 'lions in the zoo' story was true to a point. Atlas went to the zoo to think. The big cats gave him the inspiration to build a sleek, powerful body. As for the exercises in his course, while these were the most effective non-apparatus exercises he knew of, he invented at least seven of them. The dips between chairs was introduced to him by Fred Tilney to round out his chest development a little more.
I should also mention that the Canadian strongman George Jowett, who successfully market his own course also appeared in Liederman's brochure. Jowett, like Atlas, was never a Leiderman student but allowed his photos to be used for marketing purposes.
Atlas never even took the Liederman course. He was already a well developed fitness model, used by Bernarr McFadden for exercise photos in Physical Culture magazine in 1915. ven meet Liederman until 1918. They teamed up and toured the Vaudville circuit together as a double act for a year. The Liederman course did not involve lifting weights, but was a combination of bodyweight exercises and strand pulling. Atlas was only helping his pal to market his course. .
Bigbruv- I can find very little reference to Atlas refering to Swoboda, but I think that there is every possibility that Atlas took the Swoboda course when he was a teen. He also leanred much from Tilney, McFadden, Leiderman and other contemporaries of the time. The lions stretching at the zoo story was just that - a story.
Out of interest, Atlas appeared in an old Earle Liederman brochure as a "star pupil" under his real name (Angelo Siciliano). Theold school ironmen closed ranks in those days and helped each other out.
He appears in the ad and the reader is told about how much weight he can lift due to his training with Liederman- who sells courses on weight training.
We have you Bill. You are just continuing the lie. Well the world is different now and we have access to information that other generations didn't. So we can expose these lies.
Regarding the weightlifting controversy, some believe that Atlas trained with weights but continued with bodyweight exercises only after marketing his course. I won't rule this out. Bill Pearl, Jack LaLanne and Joe Bonomo all deny that Charlie lifted weights, but Joe Weider and Bob Hoffman say he did. Frankly, the man has been dead since 1972, and his son died last year aged 89. There are less and less people ever year now who knew the man personally.
People who grew up with Atlas as a neighbour say he lifted. Joe Rolino, an old time strongman and neighbour admits to the same. In fact there is an audio recording that can be found on the net with Rolino talking about it.
someone posted reports by strength historians like david gentle and others the articles said atlas lifted had a gym in ny and trained in florida at a gym
It was Tilney who wrote the early course (he was a professional course writer for several people), which was later edited by Roman, who coined the term "Dynamic Tension" and came up with the clever ad cartoons. Roman also changed Atlas' title from "America's Most perfectly Developed Man" to "The Worlds Most Perfectly Developed Man". Atlas won "America's Most Handsome Man" contest in 1921, then the perfectly developed title in 1922.
Tilney and Atlas started in November 1922 and ran the business out of Tilney's home for the first six months. They did a tour of Bermuda in 1924, giving Tilney the idea of moving the business to Florida because of the healthier weather. Atlas' wife, margaret, didn't want to leave her family in Brooklyn so Atlas stayed put while Tilney moved to Florida after selling his half of the business to Charles P. Roman in October 1929.
mmctrab - you have a point. The tigers stetching in the zoo may have given Atlas inspiration, but practically all the exercises in his course appeared at one time or another in various editions of Physical Culture magazine. Bernarr McFadden used Atlas as a model when he was younger, giving the English naturopathic physician Fred "Doc" Tilney the idea of marketing a mail order bodybuilding course as Atlas the the figurehead.
I have read several times that Atlas didnt train using his own system but actually followed the Swoboda system. Anybody know anything about this? Bill?
You're not making sense. You can't prove Atlas didn't lift weights. A whole bunch of people said they lifted weights with the guy.
What we know for a fact though is that Atlas was completely dishonest for putting his name on a course that he didn't write, and for going along with the made up stories of how the exercises were created when they were really just stolen from other authors. Heck, he didn't even do the exercises in his own course! So why should I believe a liar like Atlas anyway?
MrPrimalman- I had a two hour face-to-face conversation with Bill Pearl in 2004. He attested that Atlas did "hundreds" of push ups, knee bends, chins, leg raises, self-resistance exercises and was "dead against" lifting weights. Joe Bonomo the legendary movie stuntman was a close friend of Atlas and they even trained together for the "Perfectly Developed" contests in the 1920's. Joe pumped iron while Atlas did his non-apparatus training. Joe also stated he never saw Atlas touch weights.
Whammer79 -or whatever your real name is - either keep your comments clean and respectful or don't bother posting. Telling people to "shut the fuck up" is ignorant and immature. But what should I expect from someone who makes tired old unfounded claims about Atlas as if they were facts? I KNOW the Atlas family and several others who also knew the great man in life. So your claims that Atlas lifted weights, cooked telephone books and etc are simply without foundation.
I just received some new info about Bill Gibbons. This guy is a complete nut job. He believes in Bigfoot and believes that men and dinosaurs lived on this earth at the same time! LOL
MrPrimalman- Please get your facts straight. Atlas advocated "sun bathing" which was a big fad in the 1920-30s. He did not advocate doing that "with other men." Please show me that reference.
mmctrab- Funny how those "plenty of people" could not offer on shred of evidence that Atlas lifted weights. Bob Hoffman even took Atlas to court over the same claim, but could not produce a single witness. As for Atlas letting a kid feel his biceps, it was the 1930's - and staged for a documentary.
I am a personal friend of the family. I knew his son, Charles Atlas Jr until his passing last August at the age of 89. I was also aquianted with Atlas' business partner, Charles P. Roman for the last seven years of his life. Legendary bodybuilder, Bill Pearl, knew Charles Atlas for decades and even trained with him. He said that Angelo (Atlas' real name) never lifted weights. I can give you a lot more facts if you like.
what facts have u listed? u knew people who knew atlas. and? bill pearl did not know atlas when he was younger when he admitted to training with weights. facts r he wrote about sunbathing nude w others. that can be validated. hearsay like yours cannot.
There are plenty of people who have attested to the fact that Atlas lifted weights. It's been well established. I don't think it matters that much because Atlas was nothing special anyway.
"Atlas could tear a telephone book apart faster than anyone else at the time." How do you know this? Do you have any proof? Documented research? Please keep your comments here grounded in facts. There are websites you can go to run by narcissistic elitists that you can post the myths of Chuck.
isnt there another guy who sells books with repackaged Atlas training that does the same creepy things like inviting kids to his room to wach him flex?
didn't Atlas talk about sunbathing in the nude with other men in his books? difficult to watch this, especially the young boy, after remembering Atlas' writings.
He could perform a planche and handstand easily. Despite having quite large thighs watch?v=pj5W4Ss625I

Atlas was overrated and did keep a lot of secrets to himself. A lot of people have made amazing gains in their training thanks to Dynamic Tension, granted it wasn't the only thing he did. That could be said with any old time strong man.
batmanalk 7 months ago
Actually, this isn't the whole footage. He was demonstrating the tearing of the book, yes. He really did do the tear, but put the pieces back together to show it wasn't a trick book or anything like some strongmen who used to use them. They used to break wood and bricks that were already broke too. Charles Atlas was the real deal. You should see the footage when he pulled the train.

@Whammer79 Nope, he pulled an actual train.

Sorry, but Atlas used weights. Search for Joe Rollino. Youtube won't let me post a link. But search for Joe Rollino, coney island interviews.
He tells that Atlas had a trunk load of weights ( a trunk back then was a large storage box). Atlas was his neighbor.
Whammer79 7 months ago
@Whammer79 I spent what time I had available looking up Joe Rollino, and found him to be a pretty impressive guy. In all I could look at, I could only find a second-hand allegation that Rolliono charged Atlas with relying on weights (no direct quotes). On the other hand, Atlas' family, his neighbors, and bodybuilding legend Bill Pearl (who knew him) all asserted that they only saw him train with bodyweight exercises.
Tigerpaws9097826 4 months ago
@Tigerpaws9097826
There is an audio interview that you can find online with Joe Rollino. In that interview he says that Atlas lifted weights. He says he had a trunk (storage trunk) full of dumbbells,. Google search "Joe Rollino Coney Island audio interview". It will bring up the link you need.
Whammer79 4 months ago
@Whammer79 Thanks, I will check out the interview you cited. Up to now, I've been of a mind that Charles Atlas was what he claimed to be - but though he did have genuine strength, perhaps all was not as it seemed. I'm always open to new evidence.
Tigerpaws9097826 4 months ago
@Whammer79 As someone who personally uses isometrics and DT I can tell you that you're a moron. Charles Atlas did use weights in his career, but then stopped and only used DT. Isometrics and DT target and only target specific joint locations and someone who uses this gets larger, not necessarily stronger, than someone who trains with weights, you can tell by his physique changes that he did at one point use weights, then switched completely to DT. Stop trying to discredit a great man.
slipknotshredder666 2 months ago
@slipknotshredder666
Glad you enjoy your workout program but don't make shit up about Atlas. The guy trained with weights and used them his entire life. He also ran and did calisthenics. His "course" was just a way to make MILLIONS of dollars. It is THE worse written and organized exercise program in history. And no one can argue differently.

kozmon0t 8 months ago

Go watch the Paulomus u tube video, and after that come back and try to explain how that is the same as DT.
dalla71 2 years ago
Fixedgear im not sure if your mentally retarded or what. Your statement i lose big time on this one, makes me question your perception of reality.
One my statement that jimmy lifts weights is true, and u said it was true too, so why argue the point. I dont care if it was just for football, and that he did the other crap, before that. Point is he lifts weights.
2nd Marinovich work out system is not based on freaking dynamic tension, its primarly based on the use of light weights.
dalla71 2 years ago
Yes they do use light weights, but also utilize balance and isometrics into the training. The trend is starting to turn away from heavy weights and exercises like the bench press, towards football and sport movement exercises. Forseytk has adapted his system to include sprinting and running and I believe that component is essential to this type of trainiing. It is the missing component to Atlas' training approach. It is also why Forsteyk's program is so succesful as a football prep.
fixedgearrider 2 years ago
the forysteks are not honest
i remember seeing where they said they trained a college track team guess what someone contacted the college track coach he never heard of them and u say look at the trophies so? lots of us have trophies from grade school high school and look at his pic on his site his gut hang over his belt if hes in such good shape why the baggy shirt in his book his sons demo the exercise
MrPrimalman 2 years ago
If it works so good how come Forsteyk own son jimmy lifts weights for football , and thats jimmys own words from him on there powerflex forums.
And Troy Palomalus work out is not the same as the crap Peterson and Forsteyk teach he uses machines for his workouts that give great leverage and light weights added to those machines.
So saying that petersons and forsteyk traning is the new wave is freaking insane, considering the examples u gave dont even use what your promoting.
dalla71 2 years ago
No, Jim used weights once he got to the school. It was an esrablished regimine. Prior to that, he trained with his dad's routine all of his life. And we can go ask him if you like. Palomalu does use BW and DT like training, as does Marinovich, a great trainer for athletes and former all pro. Also Big Jim himself is a football player who won mant trophies, check his website. You lose this one big time.
fixedgearrider 2 years ago
As a final note on immigration; Yes I agree with you - we DO need immigrants. But let's be a little more selective about where we take them from. We need better health screening, better background checks and emphasise that we expect Canada's laws, institutions, culture and way of life to be accepted and respected, not opposed because they aren't "inclusive" enough for those who want everything to change just to suit their own language, culture and religion.
bgibb101 2 years ago
I think the bottom line here is - whether Atlas trained with weights or not is irrelevant to the millions of successful students that he had. They are happier, healthier, stronger and a lot more muscular than before. The course works, as does John peterson'e training methods. They won't turn you into a Mr. Olympia, but you'll get great results just the same.
bgibb101 2 years ago 3
I didn't say specifically that Atlas developed his physique with cables. I merely said that he helped out Leiderman by allowing his photo in the brochure. Atlas experimented with cables, pulleys, home-made barbell as a teenager. He sold the cables later to make money to support his young family. And he even wrote this himslef in Physical Culture magazine, which is on the Sandow Plus website for all to read. he also stated that non-apparatus exercises gave him the best results.
bgibb101 2 years ago
Bill, You lose credibility on an almost daily basis. You're credentials are bogus, as is your area of study. On many sites across the internet you are considered a FRAUD. Of course this might explain your interest in Atlas- takes one to know one.
Whammer79 2 years ago
Sure thing Dave - next time I'm in North Philly.
bgibb101 2 years ago
Like I said Dave, Atlas has been dead since 1972. Why does it matter now? You believe he lifted weights and I don't. That's it.
End of exchange.
bgibb101 2 years ago
Well it does matter Bill. It matters because many people are being misled even today about DT. They have been fooled into believing that Atlas developed his body by using DT.
I claim he used weights and you claim he used CABLES and BW. We may not agree on what he used, but we agree on what he didn't use, and he didn't use DT.
Whammer79 2 years ago
Dave- what I'm saying is, third world immigration will destroy Canada. There are ethnic gangs that would not have existed had Pierre Trudeau not opened up the country to the Third World. Of course there are law abiding citizens of ethnic backgrounds - I never said there wasn't. Our immigration policy is a joke and is letting in people with potentially fatal disases. Diseases, I might add, that were eradicated in the 50's. But hey! let's all die from bubonic plague while being "inclusive."
bgibb101 2 years ago
I'm no Trudeau fan- I think he harmed this country, but not because of immigration.
The truth is Bill we need immigration in order for our country to grow.
Are people coming in that have TB and other diseases? Yes, but that's not the fault of immigration per se. We need to do more to ensure these people are treated before entering the country, or that they get treated as soon as they enter.
Whammer79 2 years ago
Bill,
A black friend of mine has offered to arrange a speaking engagement for you in North Philly- he thinks it's very important for get your views out there and enlighten people.
Whammer79 2 years ago
Yes, Atlas trained with cables as a young man. he demostrated and sold them for a living for a few moths before beinig hired on as a fitness model for Physical Culture magazine, He endored Liedermans course of bodyweight exercises and the use of cables to help Leiderman with sales. Albeit he used his real name, Angelo Sixiliano. He DID NOT endorse any of Leidermans books on lifting weights.
I'm not hiding any of this. But Atlas Ltd is.
bgibb101 2 years ago
So Atlas lied in order to deceive the public and help Liedernan sell courses!
So if he would lie to help someone else make money it would stand to reason that he would lie in order to make money for himself. That he would lie about not liftiing weights.
And you've now admitted that Atlas used cables and BW exercise to develop himself and not Dynamic Tension.
Whammer79 2 years ago
Racist hate? I am deeply concerning about Canada becoming a dumping ground for 250,000 third world immigrants a year. If you approve of Toronto becoming a third world Ghetto, ethnic gangs shooting up our streets, huge numbers of immigrants who take advantage of our social safety net but refuse to integrate or learn to speak English, one has to wonder who the "racists" really are.
bgibb101 2 years ago
Are you saying that ALL "ethnic" (which I assume is your way of saying black) immigrants are in gangs and are shooting up the streets?
That's a pretty broad statement and that's usually what racists do.
Whammer79 2 years ago
I have a copy of the letter that Tilney wrote to David Gentle in 1977 stating he wrote the Atlas course - so there never was any dispute there.
Atlas was already well developed when he met Liederman in 1917. Leiderman used cables as part of his course, not weights. Atlas appeared in the brochure to boost sales.
Like Weider, Hoffman and others, Joe Rollo has no proof that Atlas was a weight lifter.
Get over this Dave, Atlas has been dead since 1972. Does it really matter now?
bgibb101 2 years ago
Most people do not know that Tilney wrote the course, they believe Atlas wrote it based on the exercises he did. But since TILNEY wrote it how could it be the exercises Atlas used?
Liederman trained used weights as well- he even wrote books about training with them.
Are you saying Atlas LIED when he gave his endorsement of Liederman's course?
That he lied when he said that he owes his development to Liedernan's course?
Are you saying Atlas used CABLES?
Whammer79 2 years ago
As for Joe Rollino. He's got no reason to lie. He was never a competitor of Atlas', so it's not a money issue.
Rollino lived across the street from Atlas and trained with Atlas using weights.
That's the truth- get over it!
Whammer79 2 years ago
So now I'm a crazed racist homophobe? Wow all this attention I'm getting! I'm really flattered Dave.

Whammer79 2 years ago
MrPrimalman - I did not call you a moron but stated that your claim was "moronic." I also stated that your claim that Atlas was too fat be a decent runner "fat" was "daft." How did you know that Atlas was not able to run 10 miles in under one hour? You weren't there. And this was 1937- so why the arguing about it NOW in 2009?
And as I have already offered - please give me your statement on Atlas & running and I will be happy to post it on the BronzeBow forum for you with my own answer.
bgibb101 2 years ago
Let's list the Atlas lies or mistruths.
Atlas wrote the Dynamic Tension course.
Wrong- it was written by Doc Tilney.
Atlas built his body using Dynamic Tension.

On the contrary, All Pro Troy Palomalu of the Steelers uses a training modality similar to Dynamic Tension. Others in the sport, such as trainers Marinovich and Forsteyk have used this type of training, specifically for the sport. As I said earlier, it is the new wave in training!

fixedgearrider 2 years ago
I like Atlas, I don't think he was a bad guy. But his "system" is not really his system. He did not develop it, nor did he use it to develop his body. I'm sorry if you can't accept the true history about Atlas. As an exercise method DT is fine but there are better ways to work out and condition your body- but you can include some DT exercises as well.
Whammer79 2 years ago
So we have video proof here of Atlas pretending to rip a phonebook in half that is already ripped in half and you are saying that Atlas was not a fraud?
bigbruvofenglanduk 2 years ago
dalla,
If you are looking for bodybuilding physiques, it is a well known fact that as Vince Gironda has said, diet is 90% of the equation. Using Dynamic Tension with Clarence Bass' Ripped Diet, will produce results safer and at least as good if not better than weights. Look at John or the Forsteks. It is also a fact that some well built physiques were made using a just a jump rope or sprinting routine with strict dieting.
fixedgearrider 2 years ago
I don't think he's looking for "bodybuilding" physiques- just a reasonably fit body.
To keep referring to JP or the Forsteks is misguided. They claim to be world class trainers- therefor the proof is in their students, that is how they should be judged. And based upon that their courses are a failure.
Google P90X and you'll see AMAZING results that are being obtained by THOUSANDS of people! The results that people are getting from that course is PROOF of it's effectiveness.
Whammer79 2 years ago
How come if this system is so great, most the people that do it look like crap. Just go to the transformetrics body building gallery, lol 90% of those guys look sub par to say the least.
And im not saying u have to look like a steroid freak, but these claims of dynamic tension and iso;s being superior is a flat out lie.

dalla,
If you want to see results, click on John Peterson's Videos and then ask yourself if he is for real! As for Jim, he trains for performance not appearance. His training ios gearred to produce athletic performance as both his sons and others are football players, one of tehm at the collegiate level. And Jim still participates in a local football league at his age. I don't say weights are totally bad, but for longevity in training, Forstyk and Peterson are miles ahead of the norm.
fixedgearrider 2 years ago
Have you even checked any of your facts before you opened your mouth??
I checked in Big Jim's boy and he played ZERO games for his college team in his final year of football, the year before that he played in a couple of games BUT only for a few plays!!! The kid was a bench warmer!!
No TOP athlete uses their system, nor do they use JP's. What do they use? WEIGHTS!
As for JP, he does nothing that THOUSANDS of others can't do. Nothing impressive about him. Just lots of lies and hype.
Whammer79 2 years ago

fixedgearrider 2 years ago
Sorry, my apology.
JP's pullups are not that great. He's always claimed flawless form- but in the video he is doing half rep pullups.
I banged out 27 a few months back and I'm 50.
Nothing JP is doing is jaw dropping.
Let him try some of Jack Lalanes feats of strength. Lalane lifts WEIGHTS!
Whammer79 2 years ago
Dynamic Tension methods just require more of the mind-body connection.
fixedgearrider 2 years ago
Why have you come here to defend JP when JP was never even being discussed?
You act like you truly know what JP does during his workouts. But you really don't.
His story had changed MANY times over the years.
Just like how he healed his shoulder injury keeps changing. It's all based upon whatever he's trying to sell to you.
Your assertion that DT requires more of a mind-body connection is not true either. You don't think your mind needs to be fully engaged if you're lifting heavy weights?
Whammer79 2 years ago
Just check youtube and you're going to find hundred of videos of older men knocking out hundreds of pushups and lifting some serious poundages.
There are lot's and lot's of older men that can easily outdo JP and NONE of them need to LIE!
If you've got the courage come to my forum and address ALL of the LIES that JP has told over the years.
Are you man enough to do it?
Or will you run and hide?

Mr. Atlas' course would be considered outdated today, but the theory of mind- body training is being successfully developed by those visonary trainers I previously mentioned. I believe there were some here who are detractors of the system, but a video of John Peterson showing the incredible level of strength and fitness he achieved is a just a click away. None can question the results he gets from his training as he never touches a freeweight, yet can outperform people years younger than he.
fixedgearrider 2 years ago
Sorry, but JP's lifted weights for years. He's lying to you and you're falling for it.

just read about a thrd of the new book about mcfadden the whole atlas bit was a scam from the start get the book at your library or bookstore youll know that anyone who heroworships these people are ignorant
MrPrimalman 2 years ago
Can you post the title of this book? Thanks.
Whammer79 2 years ago
"bernarr mcfadden, american physical culture mogul" it talks about how mcfadden rigged the atlas contest
la times newspaper :""the German martial ideal held an unshakable grip" on Macfadden. Benito Mussolini was a personal hero, and after they met in Europe in 1930, Macfadden agreed to train 40 Italian cadets on U.S. soil. He told a reporter, "There are times when I believe that America needs a Mussolini, as never before."
MrPrimalman 2 years ago
I found the title- Mr. America by Mark Adams.
Whammer79 2 years ago
Atlas' methods were years ahead of the times. Only now, trainers like John Peterson and Jim Forstyk are bringing them to the next level. Using the mind to simulate the resistance of weights, in applied exercise techniques, will be the next level of human achievement that can be attained. And yes, Atlas could tear a phone book in two easily.

Ha ha!!!
You must live in a dream world- almost nobody has heard of JP of Big Jim, and those that have consider them con artists.
But please feel free to post up a picture or video of youself so that we can see the great results you have achieved at this "next level".
LOL!

I dont think its Andy62. I think its DT Fag.

He came to as pretty straight forward about it, but telling him to fuck off wasn't smart at all.
bkey88 2 years ago
Well he was only more upfront once we showed we knew the real details of Atlas' life. Without that he would've been posting the usual bullshit.
I told him to fuck off because foul language is allowed on Youtube. I'm not trying to win any friends. He came here issuing a challenge- a challenge that HE seems unwilling to accept himself.
Bill considers himself an expert on Atlas- yet he basically flogs the comic stories about Atlas. That type of stuff doesn't do anyone any good.
Whammer79 2 years ago
i think you should be a great reviewer and keep up the wording you do. Its great. Lol
TheJesusbeliever1958 2 years ago
Just read through the comments here. This guy Bill seems to be pretty upfront about Atlas. Just what do you have against him anyway?
bkey88 2 years ago
Have against who? Bill?
I really don't have anything against Bill.
Whammer79 2 years ago
Whammer79 - you still haven't told me your real name. I imagine its because you don't have the courage. As for not bringing out my course, I'm engaged in documentary making for the History Channel as well as running my own business. In others words, I have a life. My course will be out in good time. And there will be medals and cash prizes to win too.
BTW, I own a security guard and private investigator agency here in Calgary. Where are you?
bgibb101 2 years ago
Some private investigator!
Although you haven't been able to put the pieces together- you probably have heard of me.
So it takes courage for me to post my name?
I use my real name on the internet all the time.
I believe you've even been to my forum.
As for courage....let's see some pictures of your RESULTS. That should at least offer some proof that your methods are useful.
You keep dodging that issue.
Surely with your wealth you own a digtial camera and video camera? Post your proof.
Whammer79 2 years ago
Because I'm a busy man and do not depend on selling muslces to make my living. Why don't YOU bring out a course? Sorry I forgot, you don't have a brain.
bgibb101 2 years ago
Ha ha, you're killing me Bill.
Whammer79 2 years ago
Unlike you Whammer79, I have a life. I run my own successful (and growing business), I travel internationally, have two published books under my belt ( a third due out in August), aheva fantastic family and enjoy life to the full.
In fact, I'm in my office right now working on a pretty big contract, while taking a break to muse on your limited mental ability to reply to my posts without profanity. Go on, try it - it doesn't hurt.
bgibb101 2 years ago
Wow, very impressive. One does wonder why it's taking you over 6 years to get your "course' published.
You also do a very good job of sounding like your Kool Aid giver- JP.
Now forgive me but I must get back to my day job of being a weathy business tycoon. Later tonight I'll be "swinging:" by Hef's place.
Whammer79 2 years ago
So you "hate people like me?" another immature comment from a 50 year old. You must have a lot of time on your hands, posting on here every few minutes. Do you actually work for a living? What are YOUR acheivements in life?
Do tell?
bgibb101 2 years ago
I have a lot of time on my hands?
What about you? You're posting just as fast and as often as I am.
Are you that fucking stupid?
What have I done?
I don't care to brag about what I have accomplished. Unlike another of your hero's- JP, who's favorite line is: No Brag, Just Fact.
Whammer79 2 years ago
What Atlas video? I didn't post any video here.
bgibb101 2 years ago
My apology- it wasn't you who posted the video.
Whammer79 2 years ago
In closing, i will say this much. Regardless of what you think, no matter what you and others say about him, Charles Atlas has inspired generations of men - young and old - to live healthier, more productive lives. His course has stood the test of time and has produced countless students who have achieved outstanding results.
Your most recent posts are needlessly repeatative. I have answered all your points openly and truthfully. If you don't like it, that's your problem.
bgibb101 2 years ago
"Now shut the fuck up you liar!"
You obviously hate the man with a passion to cvontinue with this debate.
bgibb101 2 years ago
No Bill, I hate people like you! Folks that think they can tell other people what to do.
I posted this video and I'm free to say what I want.
I notice you disabled the comments on the Atlas video that you posted, why? Afraid of the truth? Do you only want to let people see YOUR version of the truth?
Whammer79 2 years ago
Going back to the original course - Tilney provided the health and nutritional information as he was a naturopathic physician. Atlas provided the exercises and workout routines. It was an even partnership. Even if Atlas did advize nude sunbathing, he certainly wasn't the only one, and this was a popular fad in the 1920s and 1930's. Did that make him a pervert or pedophile?
bgibb101 2 years ago
Atlas said to sun bath nude with "congenial companions". Since this course was marketed to teenage boys it's pretty creepy advice.
Whammer79 2 years ago
If I wanted to "cover up" the truth about Atlas, I wouldn't be posting these details, now would I? When he won his title in 1922, there were several international competitors involved. The judges at that time including the scientists and physicians who examined and measured the competitors, concluded that Atlas was not only America's best, but arguably the world's finest physique at that time.
bgibb101 2 years ago
Wrong.
You're like the other Blowtards- stupid! You blindly follow all this shit and are too stupid to know that you've put your own foot into your mouth. You've been trapped with your own words.
Whammer79 2 years ago
The 'lions in the zoo' story was true to a point. Atlas went to the zoo to think. The big cats gave him the inspiration to build a sleek, powerful body. As for the exercises in his course, while these were the most effective non-apparatus exercises he knew of, he invented at least seven of them. The dips between chairs was introduced to him by Fred Tilney to round out his chest development a little more.
bgibb101 2 years ago
ALL of the exercises can be found in MacFadden's book Muscular Power and Beauty.
Atlas created nothing. He was the model for the Atlas course, nothing more.
Whammer79 2 years ago
I should also mention that the Canadian strongman George Jowett, who successfully market his own course also appeared in Liederman's brochure. Jowett, like Atlas, was never a Leiderman student but allowed his photos to be used for marketing purposes.
bgibb101 2 years ago
Atlas never even took the Liederman course. He was already a well developed fitness model, used by Bernarr McFadden for exercise photos in Physical Culture magazine in 1915. ven meet Liederman until 1918. They teamed up and toured the Vaudville circuit together as a double act for a year. The Liederman course did not involve lifting weights, but was a combination of bodyweight exercises and strand pulling. Atlas was only helping his pal to market his course. .
bgibb101 2 years ago
So Atlas was helping to deceive the public!
And so why are we to believe that he didn't continue to deceive the public when he marketed his own course?
Whammer79 2 years ago
So the lions STORY is another lie you admit to.
Whammer79 2 years ago
Bigbruv- I can find very little reference to Atlas refering to Swoboda, but I think that there is every possibility that Atlas took the Swoboda course when he was a teen. He also leanred much from Tilney, McFadden, Leiderman and other contemporaries of the time. The lions stretching at the zoo story was just that - a story.
bgibb101 2 years ago
GASP! This could mean that Andy62 is making up the Atlas-Swoboda connection
bigbruvofenglanduk 2 years ago
Out of interest, Atlas appeared in an old Earle Liederman brochure as a "star pupil" under his real name (Angelo Siciliano). Theold school ironmen closed ranks in those days and helped each other out.
bgibb101 2 years ago
He appears in the ad and the reader is told about how much weight he can lift due to his training with Liederman- who sells courses on weight training.
We have you Bill. You are just continuing the lie. Well the world is different now and we have access to information that other generations didn't. So we can expose these lies.
Whammer79 2 years ago
Regarding the weightlifting controversy, some believe that Atlas trained with weights but continued with bodyweight exercises only after marketing his course. I won't rule this out. Bill Pearl, Jack LaLanne and Joe Bonomo all deny that Charlie lifted weights, but Joe Weider and Bob Hoffman say he did. Frankly, the man has been dead since 1972, and his son died last year aged 89. There are less and less people ever year now who knew the man personally.
bgibb101 2 years ago
People who grew up with Atlas as a neighbour say he lifted. Joe Rolino, an old time strongman and neighbour admits to the same. In fact there is an audio recording that can be found on the net with Rolino talking about it.
Whammer79 2 years ago
this is not true
someone posted reports by strength historians like david gentle and others the articles said atlas lifted had a gym in ny and trained in florida at a gym
MrPrimalman 2 years ago
It was Tilney who wrote the early course (he was a professional course writer for several people), which was later edited by Roman, who coined the term "Dynamic Tension" and came up with the clever ad cartoons. Roman also changed Atlas' title from "America's Most perfectly Developed Man" to "The Worlds Most Perfectly Developed Man". Atlas won "America's Most Handsome Man" contest in 1921, then the perfectly developed title in 1922.
bgibb101 2 years ago
So you admit to the fraud.
Atlas didn't win World's Most Perfectly Developed Man- that title NEVER existed and was "created" by Roman.
The course was written by Tilney and Atlas just posed for the pictures.
Whammer79 2 years ago
Tilney and Atlas started in November 1922 and ran the business out of Tilney's home for the first six months. They did a tour of Bermuda in 1924, giving Tilney the idea of moving the business to Florida because of the healthier weather. Atlas' wife, margaret, didn't want to leave her family in Brooklyn so Atlas stayed put while Tilney moved to Florida after selling his half of the business to Charles P. Roman in October 1929.
bgibb101 2 years ago
mmctrab - you have a point. The tigers stetching in the zoo may have given Atlas inspiration, but practically all the exercises in his course appeared at one time or another in various editions of Physical Culture magazine. Bernarr McFadden used Atlas as a model when he was younger, giving the English naturopathic physician Fred "Doc" Tilney the idea of marketing a mail order bodybuilding course as Atlas the the figurehead.
bgibb101 2 years ago
I have read several times that Atlas didnt train using his own system but actually followed the Swoboda system. Anybody know anything about this? Bill?
bigbruvofenglanduk 2 years ago
You're not making sense. You can't prove Atlas didn't lift weights. A whole bunch of people said they lifted weights with the guy.
What we know for a fact though is that Atlas was completely dishonest for putting his name on a course that he didn't write, and for going along with the made up stories of how the exercises were created when they were really just stolen from other authors. Heck, he didn't even do the exercises in his own course! So why should I believe a liar like Atlas anyway?
mmctrab 2 years ago
Hoob22- Are you really 55 years of age? Pretty immature comment from someone who is seven years away from Social Security.
bgibb101 2 years ago
MrPrimalman- I had a two hour face-to-face conversation with Bill Pearl in 2004. He attested that Atlas did "hundreds" of push ups, knee bends, chins, leg raises, self-resistance exercises and was "dead against" lifting weights. Joe Bonomo the legendary movie stuntman was a close friend of Atlas and they even trained together for the "Perfectly Developed" contests in the 1920's. Joe pumped iron while Atlas did his non-apparatus training. Joe also stated he never saw Atlas touch weights.
bgibb101 2 years ago
Whammer79 -or whatever your real name is - either keep your comments clean and respectful or don't bother posting. Telling people to "shut the fuck up" is ignorant and immature. But what should I expect from someone who makes tired old unfounded claims about Atlas as if they were facts? I KNOW the Atlas family and several others who also knew the great man in life. So your claims that Atlas lifted weights, cooked telephone books and etc are simply without foundation.
bgibb101 2 years ago
Bill,
This is MY video posting! I can do whatever I want!
You've got no control here!
This isn't Das Blow!. This is the real world.
Now shut the fuck up you liar!
Whammer79 2 years ago
I just received some new info about Bill Gibbons. This guy is a complete nut job. He believes in Bigfoot and believes that men and dinosaurs lived on this earth at the same time! LOL
Whammer79 2 years ago
MrPrimalman- Please get your facts straight. Atlas advocated "sun bathing" which was a big fad in the 1920-30s. He did not advocate doing that "with other men." Please show me that reference.
mmctrab- Funny how those "plenty of people" could not offer on shred of evidence that Atlas lifted weights. Bob Hoffman even took Atlas to court over the same claim, but could not produce a single witness. As for Atlas letting a kid feel his biceps, it was the 1930's - and staged for a documentary.
bgibb101 2 years ago
Bill,
You are a blind fool!
The Atlas course advises to take "sunbaths" and they should be done while naked. And if possible to have several friends join you and play checkers.
I posted a scan of the page that recommends it on my forum.

It's a free country and I can post anything I want!
If you'll notice I posted videos that reveal Atlas to be a fraud- the phone book is already torn in half.
Whammer79 2 years ago
I am a personal friend of the family. I knew his son, Charles Atlas Jr until his passing last August at the age of 89. I was also aquianted with Atlas' business partner, Charles P. Roman for the last seven years of his life. Legendary bodybuilder, Bill Pearl, knew Charles Atlas for decades and even trained with him. He said that Angelo (Atlas' real name) never lifted weights. I can give you a lot more facts if you like.
bgibb101 2 years ago
what facts have u listed? u knew people who knew atlas. and? bill pearl did not know atlas when he was younger when he admitted to training with weights. facts r he wrote about sunbathing nude w others. that can be validated. hearsay like yours cannot.
MrPrimalman 2 years ago
There are plenty of people who have attested to the fact that Atlas lifted weights. It's been well established. I don't think it matters that much because Atlas was nothing special anyway.
mmctrab 2 years ago
"Atlas could tear a telephone book apart faster than anyone else at the time." How do you know this? Do you have any proof? Documented research? Please keep your comments here grounded in facts. There are websites you can go to run by narcissistic elitists that you can post the myths of Chuck.

It's kind of creepy the way he walks up to the little kid at the end and lets him feel his bicep.

isnt there another guy who sells books with repackaged Atlas training that does the same creepy things like inviting kids to his room to wach him flex?
MrPrimalman 2 years ago
didn't Atlas talk about sunbathing in the nude with other men in his books? difficult to watch this, especially the young boy, after remembering Atlas' writings.
MrPrimalman 2 years ago
The original Atlas course did recommend sunbathing in the nude and also encouraged you to do this with friends.
For a course that was bought by so many teenage boys it does seem like odd advice.
Whammer79 2 years ago
But like I said before, thats the only part of the course I have stuck to faithfully
