Why do people want diamonds? For the most part it beats me. They do have some utilitarian value in industrial machinery and that type of thing because the diamond is so hard. Beyond that though diamonds are simply an expression of human vanity and ego. They are no different than "fashion" really. Ever see the skinny girls walking down the runways in New York and Paris in those funny looking clothes while "celebrities" look on smugly in the front row? All illusion and vanity. Means nothing.

Diamonds are rare, take -- as you said yourself -- millions of years to create, and lets face it, they're pretty. If diamonds could be found in your backyard then sure, they would have little to now value, but the fact that they take so long to just find a few is what makes them so wanted and valuable. It's human nature to strive to be better than the guy beside you, even if you have to have a diamond.
