It was a different time. In those days people were not expected to live forever; or even necessarily until tomorrow.
Lauda's accident the year before and then this one really did play a major role in getting people to start thinking that things could at least be done a bit better though.
@gjk1980. Not strictly true about the identification of the marshall. The two of them ran across together, the first one being narrowly missed by the car in front of Pryce. Both marshalls new each other as they were working the same post together hence he knew the identification of his colleague straight away.
apparently the two marshals ran across the track without the permission of thier boss. the dead marshals injuries were so bad that they could not identify him properly. it was only when he didn't show up for the meeting that they knew who it was.
March 1977 a very tragic period, first this horrible accident and later the deadliest flight aviation crash ever involving two Boeing 747's and 583 dead.
Yes, the race was not stopped like Imola'94 and with no car to pit radio the drivers didn't know what had happened! Niki Lauda was only told the details when he got to the podium. This would not happen today, that's for sure!
Yes, the race organisers at Imola were just as bad. The doctors (including Prof. Sid Watkins) knew Ayrton would not live and I'm sure told the organisers who restarted the race anyway!
Van Vuuren gets cut in half running across the damn track and the guy at the finish line is ON the friggin' track with his flag while Lauda flies by at 200mph!
You said it yourself; Van Vuuren was running across the 'damn' track, not looking up or back, or having any thought about cars flying by at 200+mph. Nor did Pryce expect the man to be there, running across the track.
Here, the race has finished, everyone is well aware of it, and Lauda knows the man will be standing there.
Thats the one Senna died, can't believe it was that long ago (15 years now). However since this was the last fatality in F1, it shows F1 is now comparitivly safe
Look at 2:18 the flagman is on the track with cars going full speed! These officials and track workers must have had no training at all, and the flagman could have made it 3 all in a row.
According to some articles I've read on the incident, they were volunteers and most likely didn't have any training at all. Terrible, terrible way to organize F1 races.
Tom Pryce was killed instantly, the fire extinguisher hit him full in the face, they weigh around 40lbs and he was doing at least 170mph, it ripped his helmet off and the chin strap partially decapitated him. The driverless car continued down the main straight at full speed, out of control to the 1st corner where it collided with Jacques Laffite, putting him out of the race.
Its amazing how the guy with the checkered flag is practically not more than 5 feet away from the car blazing full speed. Man, 70's F1 was a death wish. I remember alot of drivers being killed that decade. As cars were getting faster safety was still lagging behind technology. Today F1 is sooo much safer it's not even comparable. That Kubica crash in Montreal a couple years back he would be dead if it were in the 70's.
At around the 13-14 sec mark is where Pryce collided with Van Vuuren, he must've been clocking 170-175mph. Still don't know how Stuck managed to avoid both marshals though.
not necessarily it had a GP win in the 1976 Swedish GP-in that race the 2 cars finished 1st and 2nd!(Jody Scheckter & Patrick Depailler). According to wikipedia scheckter left Tyrell saying the car was junk. But still it did better than most cars....
Indeed. F1 had turned into a video game nowadays. No risks, no accidents, no surprises. Also no surprise it is gathering less and less public every year.
@Runkleforskin Just watch the Tom Pryce Video Tribute to see what happened a few laps before. Due to a marshall running across the track, both he and Tom were killed instantly
@Runkleforskin No one is suggesting You messed up, 2 months ago in the posts for all to see, you asked a straight forward question. This was in response to a post 2 years previous by Tobiimnrw. Since your post 2 months ago, no doubt you have found the answer to your own question. Shame I put a response for you, cann't please everyone.
Still a tragic loss of two lives, and one of the greatest disasters for F1.
i seriously doubt any bird would circle about the pit straight of an f1 track! i know a seagull has been hit by a car at daytona but that is right by the beach... i think it's just a big bit of plastic or similar.
