  • When I had gotten there I'd lost about 45 pounds. My mum knew the symptoms and she tried to get me to go to the doctor, because was always freezing cold in June, July, and August, .. September 17th I was diagnosed. I would go to school, and sleep, come home and sleep, I had all the symptoms, but as any parent wants to deny it my mother would do everything she could to keep me safe, and alert, to get me to eat, but I'd get sick off of it. Please do an update on how Dean is!

  • I have been a T-1 for 13 years and on Friday my Endo. asked me if I wanted a

Islet cell transplant. I am excited about that and will have to see if even for a year I won't need insulin. The other problem I have is I am hypoglycemic unaware so i can't feel lows at all. The transplant is supposed to remove the lows as well as the highs so yes I will get it and take the anti-rejection cocktail for life.

  • @Camman010 My best wishes go out to you!

  • @mason1189 I'm glad you're okay now. We didn't know the symptoms either. Awareness of type 1 diabetes is so important.

  • I hope your son is doing well. I enjoyed your video.

  • @Diabetesmother Thank you. He is doing well. Good time to update maybe. :) He graduated from OSU and has a job. Very proud of him!!

  • First type one video I've seen that actually has some decent content to it, thanks for that.

Type one since September '99. 21yrs old now. =/

    ~xx

  • @morwen555 Thank you. I'm so passionate about spreading awareness about type 1 and the symptoms. We weren't so familiar with the symptoms and neither are many many medical professionals when presented with a patient with the onset of it. I saw your recent video - I wish you great success in your job search!!! :-)

  • 1,ooo? oh my god, mine was 31.4 when i was admitted, and that's the highest it's ever been....

  • @Diabeteshelp2010 I think we're comparing different units of measures. I'm talking about mg/dl (American system as I understand it), and you're probably talking about mmol/l. For instance, 594 mg/dl = 33 mmol/l.

  • @type1awareness Ah, didn't think about that, still i really liked this video, well done :D

  • @Diabeteshelp2010 Thank you. :)

  • @type1awareness No problem, keep up the great work :)

  • Loved your video. What an honor to your son as well as educating the general public. I've been Type 1 for almost 28 years-it's been quite a ride.

  • Wonderful video...

  • Great Video !!

  • I HV had diabete's for nerly 5 years now n im only 11 i promise it doesnt change your life onne bit just be sencible and take care off your self ... look after your feet take care!

  • Just diagnosed with type 1, been at 17.1 according the the blood sugar test for three months, which is as far as it can date back. Is it normal for it to be going up to above 280 when I'm following the carb/sugar plan and insulin plan as instructed? Also, blurry vision - does it dissipate after the first week or sometime soon?

  • @AldenPeffer There is no perfection in controlling type 1 diabetes only an earnest attempt to influence blood sugar management. Every minute, hour, and day is different influenced by so many factors some of which you can count and some of which you cannot count like stress level, hormones, the weather (lol), etc... This has been my observation from being involved with other families living with type 1 diabetes. Wishing you joy and good bg numbers Alden! :)

  • nice video. Both my sons were diagnosed in the same week. 15 and 10. I spend most of my time on the internet lookin up diabetes things. I always tell them i can fix anything but im strugglin with this. Hope a cure is round the corner. 15 and 10 years old but they are still my babies

  • he should get the omnipod it has no stupid tubing!!!11

  • ohio state? omg i live right by there

  • i was diagonsed this year and we are still putting the video together, cann't wait until it is ou.

  • does diabeties lower life expectancy

  • Well- controlled diabetes is the leading cause of nothing." Dr. William Polonsky, PhD. Diabetes Behavioral Institute.

  • yup

  • Ive had diabetes for 4 years im 11 almost 12 and i got diagnosed when i was 6 (almost 7) and sometimes it is tough.... but you just have to live with it and hope for a cure and dont give up!! My dad is one of the top fundraisers in the country for the American Diabetes Association and weve been doing it for i think 4 years now... and we do the JDRF walk to cure diabetes... so my family is pretty involved! Just make sure you take care of yourself And live to the best of your ability

  • Wow. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 14 years ago (I am 21 now) and my parents haven't made me such touching Youtube video like this one. I may have a have a chat with them. LoL. I am glad your son is well because glucose levels that high are extremely dangerous. I give him my best wishes. Thank you for getting the message out about type 1. It means a lot to me for obvious reasons. Please continue what you are doing, its fantastic.

  • If I may make a correction. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease.

This means your immune system mistakes a component of your own body as an invader. Meaning it was the immune system that attacked and killed the beta cells produced by the pancreas. Type 1 doesn't attack your immune system at all, type 1 is the end result of your immune system attacking the pancreas, et al. Might be a responsible move to make that distinction in your video. And great vid BTW.

  • Yes, you are absolutely correct. I apologize my wording is not perfect. I do state it is an autoimmune disease.

  • this video is beautiful... it almost made me cry. i, too, was diagnosed type 1 diabetic almost 2 years ago. have been hospitalized with dka when i was diagnosed and also 2 times after that... i actually just got out of the hospital 5 days ago for dka & acute renal failure. i've realized it's something i just have to deal with if i wanna live a long & healthy life.. & things like this help me realize that, so thank you. really.

  • hi guys

i think i mite hav type 1 please help

    okay these are my symptoms

aces and pains in stomach and shoulder

    get thirsty all the time

lost a full stone in the last 2-3 weeks for no apparent reason

    feeling tired a lot

    can't concentrate on things

    feel unwell everyday

needing to urinate 10-12 times a day

  • I am not a medical professional. Please see a medical professional.

  • that video was so good.

i have a question....how did your son do in college..im a senior in high school this year i have had type one for 9 years and im really nervous (as is my mom) about going away. do you have any advice?

  • My son was/is doing wonderfully. Have a sick day plan and have supplies for such. Always keep something with you for lows. I'm sure you'll do wonderfully too. Enjoy!! :)

  • I was diagnosed 14 yrs ago,and yes leaving for college was very scary. The best thing to do is to sit and talk with your roomate/hallmates.Explain the disease and ask them to keep an eye you.If they are anything like my freshman year hallmates, they will worry about you more than you worry about you.

Call your parents often with updates. DON"T get lazy with checking your glucose levels, your true friends will wait for you before dinner and going to parties. And please be careful with alcohol.

  • Thank you for your truly beautiful video and commitment to raising awareness!

  • Thank you. I feel so strongly about getting the symptoms out there. We were not aware prior to diagnosis really either. I'm very passionate about it now.

  • im a type one diabetic too

    i got it when i was 8

  • I also have diabetes and i live in canada too. im 12 and have had it since i was 9. I was diagnosed on July 30th 2006. Of corse it had to be in the middle of summer. I get 4 neddles a day. Sure it may be hard but life goes on. The hardest part is that people actually make fun of me at school. That made me cry for like so long. :(

  • I'm so sorry that kids have been cruel to you. Know that you're not alone!

  • oh ok thanks i was just wondering

  • AllyGirl, To achieve the best control, you should not be put on a set MDI(Multiple daily injections). Your MDI should change daily depending on healt, activity, carb intake, etc. You should inject to cover everything you eat, all carbs. You need to see an edocrinologist, since general practitioners aren't specialists and they usually get diabetics going on the wrong path. Take care...

  • blood sugar metres must be different in the USA because I am from canada and when i got diagnosed I was 28 and normal is 4-7

  • Yes, the blood sugar numbers are different. There are converters, but I wasn't able to post the link within this comment.

  • thanks for making this vid, im 13 years old and i was diegnosed with type 1 diabetes 2 weeks away from christmas 2008.

for me its hard because ive live 12 years without it and miss not worring about my levels.

    so thank you!

  • I too am a Type 1. Diagnosed Jan 28, 2008 at the age of 34. Type 1 is not just a disease of juveniles. I'm living proof.

For those of you who've been dealing with this since their childhood, my heart goes out to you. It's bad enough dealing with it as an adult.

  • I am 21 years old male..with type 1 diabetes.. it was diagnosed at 18 years of my age..

i am taking 3 insulin injection a day right before meals... and sometimes i just feel so dipressed...but life goes on..

I WISH IN FUTURE THEY FIND A CURE..

    peace.. thanks nice ved..

  • I have type one too, but i was diagnosed when I was six, it was very confusing when I first found out because I was so young. I do have to say it does make you a stronger person as Bronanski said.

  • Remember, diabetes is far from a death sentence and not something you should pity people for having.

Manage it responsibly, and you will live as long and as healthy as the next person. Great vid.

  • What does labored breathing mean?

  • breathing is first rapid and shallow but as acidosis worsens, breathing gradually becomes deep, slow, labored and gasping.

  • It means hard to breath or difficulty breathing.

  • Keep checking sugar.I am to get one very soon.I was diagnosed at 21 and received the pump when I was at 29.I've had many hypo reactions. I'm blessed being still able to sweat or yawn when my sugar is low to realize it.Most lows were when I slept and while working.Being a thin person and able to burn sugar very efficiently using the muscles is my weak point in management, suspending or temporarily lowering my basal does'nt help as the 4 hour window for the insulin is in effect.Keep on Deano!

  • Wow, I can't imagine how your son must've felt being diagnosed at 1000. I was diagnosed at 14 in 2004 and I remember how sick I felt when my results came back at only 520.

    p.s. <3 Ohio State

  • Your son is a star. I can only imagine how sick he must have felt to have had a reading of over 1000. I'm 21 and have had type 1 diabetes for almost 14 years now. It's a daily battle, but even though it weakens your body in so many ways, it makes you a much stronger person. Thanks for posting this video, and good luck to your son and you! :)

  • Thank you, and best wishes to you also!! Be strong and live well Bronanski!!! :)

  • Thank you so much! :)

  • my friend has a pump but your suger can not be over 1,000 i know!!!!

  • Sorry you're incorrect. A person's (with type 1 diabetes) blood sugar certainly can be that high when unmanaged. This was at my son's diagnosis. A blood sugar reading this high most often means going into a coma and either come out of the coma or not. A BG meter will not register this number - it would only show up as "high". My son was in DKA at diagnosis an extremely dangerous condition.

  • diabetes is scary!!!!!!! my niece has diabetes!!! wot r the symptons?

  • Beautiful family! I always enjoy your posts on CWD. Hope the college years are going well...it's one of my biggest worries for the future!!

  • what song is this?

  • Titled "Amazing" by Janelle

  • Great video, and beautiful song as well! I was diagnosed this April, 3 weeks before my 18th birthday. I don't think you ever forget the day you are diagnosed, it is such a dramatic life change. My mom just made a video for our walk team as well.

  • Thank you for sharing that beautiful video....I found the link on Tami's board. See you in a few days amiga!

  • Um Gr8 VID !..

But How did u guyZ kno bout the pump?..Did the doctor tell u bout it ?..OR u found out urself ..n from the day a person is diagnosed with diabetes ..how many dayZ or months do u have 2 wait 2 get the insulin pump?..PLZZZZ PLZZ PLZ PLZ Answer!.Give me a message!..ThnXxX : )

  • Yes our doctor told us all about it. Every situation is different, but for my son he was put on the insulin pump right away.

  • really? my endocrinologist said I had to wait one year with normal A1Cs before I could go on it.

  • My son's endo put him on an insulin pump right away to help him in blood sugar management. With ordering, insurance paperwork, and training he had it on within a few weeks of diagnosis. It's an excellent tool.

  • wonderfully done...thank you for sharing...from a mom that understands

  • This video post is amazing...our daughter was diagnosed on Jan 17th of this year at age 5. We understand and yes we will visualize and pray for a cure. Thank you for sharing

  • My son was diagnosed at age 14. I pray with you.

  • i wish that there was a cure for diabetes! i'm 13 and i've had it since i was 10. it really sucks. BUT i've just started on the insulin pump today. it's awesome :)

  • I hope the insulin pump makes your life easier and improves your A1C, lovelife755!!! Persevere with it, if it's tricky at first. We will find a cure some day!!!

  • This video misses the key point that most Type 1 diabetics want to educate people about: Type 1 diabetes is NOT preventable in any way, nor related to lifestyle.

Joe Public will have no idea that autoimmune diseases are not preventable. Also, I would show more pictures of Dean testing, bleeding, injecting, changing his site, etc. Show people having seizures. People on dialysis. Young people blind. Get the word out, and don't sugarcoat (no pun intended!)it.

  • I hear what you're saying ReginaChick. My son is away at college I could not input additional photos (testing) than what I had, and I wanted to get this video put together stat. I still would not have done it as you state as this is not our experience. Making a video is a form of art and personal in nature in my opinion.

  • ReginaChick, I also made the point that Type 1 has nothing to do with the disease attacking anything. It is auto-immune. Type 1 is the result of the immune system thinking your pancreas and beta cells are invaders.

I mean alot of people think Type 1 is some form of aggressor, thusly creating itself, before it even exists itself.

  • Great video. I pray and visualize a cure.

  • What a great looking young man! THE Ohio State University - lol.
