It's not classic disco if you think of classic disco as having a lot of strings in the background, which a lot of the disco numbers had (like TSOP, for example). But it sure was played in the discos and is a great song to dance to. Can't believe it didn't get higher than Number 8.
Sorry Mike but there were others doing what you call DISCO before Joe Simon. It was being done in the 60s as R&B or Soul. I used to listen to CKLW here in Boston during the 50,s. Use to listen to Ron Knowles every night. I even won a copy of Bill Haleys Leasn Jean. I still have that 45 with his autograph.
I think this guy has it wrong. This is southern soul at its best. This song was the precursor to Marvin Gaye's Got to Give it Up! Joe Simon and Gamble and Huff really tore up the charts. Joe was the man! Clubs used to bump with this song back in the day. Not a person was sitting down when this song was played.
Thank you Music Mike for bringing this very underrated hit to light again ! I'm going to have to agree that this really is good old-fashioned SOUL music...May have crossed over to the disco charts, but Joe Simon was/is strictly Louisiana soul and R & B. I remember watching the kids on Bandstand and Soul Train dancing The Bump to this record in '75 a little before the late 70s disco explosion. Take Care, Mike and Thanks again for this gem!
Thanks MUSIC MIKE!!!!! Always loved ( and did play this one) back in the day...Disco was meant to be "fun, get up and dance music" not sit at your table and listen to chord progressions. DISCO MEANT SOUL DANCE MUSIC!!!!!!an easy to follow thumpin common time beat, horn accents...get up and dance to it.
if disco started in 75 what about James brown & the JB's "doin it to death" the king of all disco tunes-disco started to surface around 1972. early example: The spinners "I'll be around"
Of course this is disco. There is some critic BS saying that it didn't really begin til the Hustle in '75, but that's silly. Boogie Down, Keep on Truckin', TSOP, Rock your Baby, Rock the Boat, Do it Til yer Satisfied, etc are all disco. Disco is one of those things-you know it when you hear it/see it. This tune? Disco. Joe Simon had a classic voice too.
Not sure what this guy is talking about. First, "Love Train" was a hit in 73 not 72.. "Love I Lost" by Harold Melvin and most early Philly Soul are not disco records. The sounds coming out of Florida in 1974 such as TK Records like "Rock Your Baby" or other records like"Rock The Boat" were close to real disco. Gloria Gaynor was the true first in late 74 and the Tom Moulton mixes.
CKLW... I was born in Elyria, Ohio, in 1971. I swear on everything I've ever stood for in my life that this is one of the very first radio stations I ever heard/listened to in life. The call letters... they've been replaying in my head since 1976 when I left Ohio with my family. And with such a great presentation of this fantastic song? I couln't ask for much more.
oh man I heard this song about a month ago on the radio. i havent heard it in years. im from the south so I grew up listening to songs like this and blues...damn good music
@MusicMike2 it is disco dico soul cant u hear the synthesizers in this song n d beats n whats wrong with disco had great music rick dees fucked it up with disco duck b songs like king kong, disco1st took off with 1st choice armed n extremely dangerous harold melvin n d blue notes dont leave me this way wake up everybody d trammps disco inferno zing with the strings of my heart hold back the night d bee gees stain alive good disco had great music whatcha talkin bout willis?

It's disco. As an example....the web site "Disco Savvy" lists "Get Down" as a disco hit. Also, there is a CD called "D.J. Disco Mix, Vol. II" that includes "Get Down". It's early disco.........

I could not say what the first disco hit was ~ this is a fav tune ~ no longer have the 45RPM ~ but I did not consider it disco ~ Kool & the Gang or Donna Summer maybe ~ think I will research it
Joe Simon is a Bishop now. But I remember I was about 4 years old and I went on stage with him in Detroit at a place called "Phelps Lounge." He was the Bomb!!! He's still sings real good. May God Bless him.
Correction! This is a great classic by Joe Simon...not Joe Tex (though he has great songs as well!). Thanks to debbiebarden123 for pointing this out to me...God bless you all!
this artist is named joe simon, not joe tex....although, they(in their own rite)were very talented individuals. if there is a "country feel" to it, i certainly couldn't hear it....
You are so right! I apologize! Thanks for pointing that out to me...I still stand my stand that it has a country feel to it because R&B influenced the country music scene as well. You are again right, it was R&B that influenced country music and not the other way around. I love music and never mind being corrected. Thanks to another great music fan!
Okay, just to set the record STRAIGHT once and for all. Issac Hayes to Joe Simon were considered 'soul' music. It wasn't until Donna Summer that a black artist was considered 'disco'. Hot Butter's 'Popcorn' was the first electronic 'pop' instrumental to out sell Wendy Carlos 'Switched On Bach', and lay the groundwork for Kraftwerk to be accepted. The FIRST 'disco' marketed song in NA was El Bimbo's 'Bimbo Jet'. This was the song that opened the clubs, and made leisure suits acceptable. Honest.:)
This song always remind me of being a 16 yr old teen getting out of school and being in the bus with my friends hearing this jam driving into Downtown Los Angeles.
Awesome, MusicMike! I was thinking that "Keep On Truckin'" by Eddie Kendricks was the first disco song. What do you think? Thank you for posting this gem.
Hi Music Mike You're right This song was a HUGE hit back in 75 and now sadly forgotten. I remember we used to like to dance The Bump to this one Ha! As for the first disco song I really dont include early sounds of Philadelphia as disco That was such a unique style within itself The first disco record that I remember that had an infectious beat like NEVER BEFORE was The Hughes Coorporation's Rock The Boat IMO Rock The Boat was truly the first disco hit. Thanks for Joe Simon and this gem!
MusicMike, did the follow-up to this song, "Music In My Bones" gain any popularity in Canada. When Soul Train was just a local Chicago TV show (before Don Cornelius)this was a sho nuff jam which I liked better than "Get Down". It's also the '45 I bought. Honestly, though I think the latter was pretty much just a reprise. They're both from the same LP.
The intro jingleto this video called "60's Bells " was very popular for radio stations to identify themselves back in the day . I listened to radio station KFRC in San Francisco that used the same intro . " KFRC San Francisco . " was sung over the air to I.D the station before a song . @Medic83301 I am trying to remember KFRC It's really vague. (I remember KDIA formerly KWBR; KSOL formerly KSAN, & KYA) Please refresh my memory a little.
@shelovesrb7777 : It was 610 on the AM dial when I lived there and along about late 1975 , they had an FM station that simulcasted from the AM station after 8:00 at night . I think it was on 106.1 FM before it moved to the old KYUU spot at 98.1 FM in the late 90's . Do you remember Dr. Don Rose ? He was my favorite DJ at KFRC , never missed a morning that he was on the air !
Did a little quick internet research on Dr. Don. Looks like he was on the air during the years I first left home. Thanks, I still love Bay Area memories.
Oh, MusicMike, you did it this time. I group up listening to CKLW. Hearing the theme/intro brought up this sudden feeling in my chest....nostalgia, I guess. Thanks for taking me back to me teen years. (Oh, and thanks for the Joe Simon hit, too!)
Station intro song was the same used by KFRC in San Francisco in the mid '60's !
