  • Station intro song was the same used by KFRC in San Francisco in the mid '60's !

  • It's not classic disco if you think of classic disco as having a lot of strings in the background, which a lot of the disco numbers had (like TSOP, for example). But it sure was played in the discos and is a great song to dance to. Can't believe it didn't get higher than Number 8.

  • boy you can dance your ass off to this song

  • Sorry Mike but there were others doing what you call DISCO before Joe Simon. It was being done in the 60s as R&B or Soul. I used to listen to CKLW here in Boston during the 50,s. Use to listen to Ron Knowles every night. I even won a copy of Bill Haleys Leasn Jean. I still have that 45 with his autograph.

  • I think this guy has it wrong. This is southern soul at its best. This song was the precursor to Marvin Gaye's Got to Give it Up! Joe Simon and Gamble and Huff really tore up the charts. Joe was the man! Clubs used to bump with this song back in the day. Not a person was sitting down when this song was played.

  • thanks to the rifkind bros at for putting out this classic

  • we use to jam the bump with this song----get down get down on the floor.

  • Love this song!!!!

  • this was fav song to do the bump to. perfect tempo, absolutely perfect

  • Thank you Music Mike for bringing this very underrated hit to light again ! I'm going to have to agree that this really is good old-fashioned SOUL music...May have crossed over to the disco charts, but Joe Simon was/is strictly Louisiana soul and R & B. I remember watching the kids on Bandstand and Soul Train dancing The Bump to this record in '75 a little before the late 70s disco explosion. Take Care, Mike and Thanks again for this gem!

  • Excellent, par contre le disquaire au début est en trop :)

  • Great station CKLW kissing next to WABC on the AM dial way back in the 70's before talk radio relegated music to the FM side..

  • Thanks MUSIC MIKE!!!!! Always loved ( and did play this one) back in the day...Disco was meant to be "fun, get up and dance music" not sit at your table and listen to chord progressions. DISCO MEANT SOUL DANCE MUSIC!!!!!!an easy to follow thumpin common time beat, horn accents...get up and dance to it.

if disco started in 75 what about James brown & the JB's "doin it to death" the king of all disco tunes-disco started to surface around 1972. early example: The spinners "I'll be around"

  • This is great!! Loved the intro!!! Great entertainment!!!!! Thanks

  • Of course this is disco. There is some critic BS saying that it didn't really begin til the Hustle in '75, but that's silly. Boogie Down, Keep on Truckin', TSOP, Rock your Baby, Rock the Boat, Do it Til yer Satisfied, etc are all disco. Disco is one of those things-you know it when you hear it/see it. This tune? Disco. Joe Simon had a classic voice too.

  • .... everytime i clicked an area farther away.. he says love train. XD

  • I like this! I remember this tune but they NEVER play it.

  • --This is "Makin' Babies" music!

  • AWESOME SONG JOE! NOW THE COOL CATS ARE DO'IN IT LIKE THIS!

  • Not sure what this guy is talking about. First, "Love Train" was a hit in 73 not 72.. "Love I Lost" by Harold Melvin and most early Philly Soul are not disco records. The sounds coming out of Florida in 1974 such as TK Records like "Rock Your Baby" or other records like"Rock The Boat" were close to real disco. Gloria Gaynor was the true first in late 74 and the Tom Moulton mixes.

  • I used this one in my dj days...it got all ages up 7 movin...Joe went back to his roots and the Gospel he really never left...

  • CKLW... I was born in Elyria, Ohio, in 1971. I swear on everything I've ever stood for in my life that this is one of the very first radio stations I ever heard/listened to in life. The call letters... they've been replaying in my head since 1976 when I left Ohio with my family. And with such a great presentation of this fantastic song? I couln't ask for much more.

    GREAT post! I love it!

  • I've just started playing this song on the piano.

  • joe simon is the king of soul you rock joe

  • Joe Simon and this song..Classic:D

  • Y he TRIPPING BAD!! BUT he cool though?

  • I loved Joe Simon's Chokin Kind, Teenagers Prayer, etc. But give a listen to him singing Amazing Grace. WOW what talent.

  • This song still sounds GREAT. Thanks for posting it.

  • great music

  • this guy has a great voice

  • I danced with Joe Simon on stage in Detroit when he sang this song in the mid 70s. Lord, I love this mans voice.

  • I haven't heard this song in years! This was a big favorite of mine back in the day! Thanks for posting!

  • this ain't DIsco!!! In my opinion the significant early records were Doctor's Orders from Carol Douglas and Soul Makossa before it.

And this guy was a d.j.? sheesh...

  • get down joe, this is one of my favorites 4real

  • How about 100 Proof Aged in Soul - Somebody's Been Sleeping - lots of "Disco" in that record.

  • how about the spinners, i'll be around in 1972?

  • What a voice!

  • This song really wants to make you get down on the floor.

  • I sanged with joe simon. I was 5 years old.

  • @KingMellow11 where are u from, if you don't mind stating?

  • @oaklandonthecomeup I'm from Detroit

  • @KingMellow11 The reason I asked is because Joe Simon used to sing a lot around Oakland years ago.

  • @oaklandonthecomeup Yea. that was his spot.

  • oh man I heard this song about a month ago on the radio. i havent heard it in years. im from the south so I grew up listening to songs like this and blues...damn good music

  • this song rocked-back in the day get down and do the bump

  • Awesome.

  • There were many varieties of disco and this song is definitely in the variant that evolved from Philly Soul.

Just because it doesn't sound like Donna Summer doesn't mean it ain't disco. And disco ain't an insult. This is good music.

  • This was my grandmother song, I still love it!!

  • This isn't Disco...ITS SOUL....GOOD OL' SOUL.

  • What is your definition of disco?

  • @MusicMike2 the fast druming, thumping bassline, melodic guitar...I always thought the first disco song was Boogie Down by Eddie Kendricks

  • @MusicMike2 it is disco dico soul cant u hear the synthesizers in this song n d beats n whats wrong with disco had great music rick dees fucked it up with disco duck b songs like king kong, disco1st took off with 1st choice armed n extremely dangerous harold melvin n d blue notes dont leave me this way wake up everybody d trammps disco inferno zing with the strings of my heart hold back the night d bee gees stain alive good disco had great music whatcha talkin bout willis?

  • @MusicMike2

    Sorry Mike,

But this song is Pure Soul of the 70's..Donna Summers was more disco....Disco was late 70's but this song would not be classified for being disco to the black community, maybe it made the charts (crossover) Love your voice by the way

  • It's disco. As an example....the web site "Disco Savvy" lists "Get Down" as a disco hit. Also, there is a CD called "D.J. Disco Mix, Vol. II" that includes "Get Down". It's early disco.........

  • @Spadesz93 Sounds like a disco arrangement to me but the singing does have a soul style.

  • @Spadesz93 good bumping song

  • This is not disco!

  • CKLW.. Wish I could go back to the Seventies. So much better than now.

  • I SO agree with you!

  • that was the good time in 80s and70s people haven fun and the music was good and the music was cool to list to ,not now the music is know good to list to these day

  • cool music detroit mi

  • This song is a BOMB!

    Daryl

  • i'm 42 i grew up in brookshire texas n my dad use to own a juke joint, n i was 8 r 9 n i use 2 hear all this music n loved it growing up even 2 this day along with all the 70's,80's funk,soul,r&b,hip-hop. my wife calls me old but this is real music. slow draggin to slow jams n just chillin. now this thugs today r all about killing, banging, drugs, n violence. they can't hold a relate to us. rude 2 adults n law enforcement. there is no more old school except our memories n music. what a waste now

  • Chills!!!!

  • He's a bishop now.Something how it sounds like gospel!!!

  • The 1st King of disco.

  • oh yeeeah! this is stone to the bone good disco soul. i wuz a junior in high school in 1975 when this wuz the song of songs. wow those were the days to die for. good fun platform shoes big wide brim hats and soul music fir days. people didn't worry bout a thing. they danced and danced. and life got better and better. why did those good days ever have to end? i wish i knew. this had to be a number one song in 1975. keep own with it. joe simon was a good artist.

  • Disco is water down r&B.

  • wow. what a profound and insightful observation.

  • Love the CKLW intro! I grew up in the Detroit area and used to listen to CKLW when I was in grade school. Fond memories...

  • I grew up in CLEVELAND & listened to CKLW religiously! Also, HUGE MEMORIES for me as well!

    Daryl

  • kimmarie801 same here...i had a good time in the 70's i was born 69..

  • WoooooooHoooooo!

  • Joe Simon was and is one of the best all time soul singers. He has never received his due recognition.

  • yeah!! this is my granddad's stuff! Thanks for posting it. It made me smile and think of him.

  • I wish i could take a trip in a time machine and go back to the 70s because of the music and the cars. This music was awesome. If i knew where in this world they play music like this id fly there,Guaranteed

  • I was a teenager in the 70's and wished I could go back in a time machine to the

50s! Grease- like the movie with John Travolta...the late 60's was good music to grow up with, I danced alot lol

  • Can I go back with you? :)

  • @nailclippers3 fun time

I could not say what the first disco hit was ~ this is a fav tune ~ no longer have the 45RPM ~ but I did not consider it disco ~ Kool & the Gang or Donna Summer maybe ~ think I will research it

  • WOW!! That piano is ORGASMIC!!

  • Joe Simon is a Bishop now. But I remember I was about 4 years old and I went on stage with him in Detroit at a place called "Phelps Lounge." He was the Bomb!!! He's still sings real good. May God Bless him.

  • I love to get up and get down on this song

  • Correction! This is a great classic by Joe Simon...not Joe Tex (though he has great songs as well!). Thanks to debbiebarden123 for pointing this out to me...God bless you all!

  • I think this great song by Joe Tex fits in many categories...has anyone considered that it also has a 'country' feel about it, too?

  • this artist is named joe simon, not joe tex....although, they(in their own rite)were very talented individuals. if there is a "country feel" to it, i certainly couldn't hear it....

  • You are so right! I apologize! Thanks for pointing that out to me...I still stand my stand that it has a country feel to it because R&B influenced the country music scene as well. You are again right, it was R&B that influenced country music and not the other way around. I love music and never mind being corrected. Thanks to another great music fan!

  • U can call him Rev Simon he's a preaching man now:-)

  • Okay, just to set the record STRAIGHT once and for all. Issac Hayes to Joe Simon were considered 'soul' music. It wasn't until Donna Summer that a black artist was considered 'disco'. Hot Butter's 'Popcorn' was the first electronic 'pop' instrumental to out sell Wendy Carlos 'Switched On Bach', and lay the groundwork for Kraftwerk to be accepted. The FIRST 'disco' marketed song in NA was El Bimbo's 'Bimbo Jet'. This was the song that opened the clubs, and made leisure suits acceptable. Honest.:)

  • Is that, Is that the Rev. Joe Simon???? Must be 77, again and I'm in the Army, hah, ha, ha, ha. Sure do miss the Rev.

    Sybenett-

  • Actually i remember the first disco song to come out was 1972s hot butter popcorn .Trust me,i know lol

  • Thanku for he lovely post:)

  • This song always remind me of being a 16 yr old teen getting out of school and being in the bus with my friends hearing this jam driving into Downtown Los Angeles.

  • Very cool. Mike, you have once again proved yourself the master!

  • Awesome, MusicMike! I was thinking that "Keep On Truckin'" by Eddie Kendricks was the first disco song. What do you think? Thank you for posting this gem.

  • I'm a big fan of this channel. What a pleasant surprise to see this gem on here!

  • 1974 "Rocking Chair" Gwen McCrae where does this fall in? Joe Simon nice !!

  • Hi Music Mike You're right This song was a HUGE hit back in 75 and now sadly forgotten. I remember we used to like to dance The Bump to this one Ha! As for the first disco song I really dont include early sounds of Philadelphia as disco That was such a unique style within itself The first disco record that I remember that had an infectious beat like NEVER BEFORE was The Hughes Coorporation's Rock The Boat IMO Rock The Boat was truly the first disco hit. Thanks for Joe Simon and this gem!

  • MusicMike, did the follow-up to this song, "Music In My Bones" gain any popularity in Canada. When Soul Train was just a local Chicago TV show (before Don Cornelius)this was a sho nuff jam which I liked better than "Get Down". It's also the '45 I bought. Honestly, though I think the latter was pretty much just a reprise. They're both from the same LP.

    Thanks for the great post.

  • That was the jam. My little niece who's 7 loves this. Sang, Joe Simon. Underrated.

  • The intro jingleto this video called "60's Bells " was very popular for radio stations to identify themselves back in the day . I listened to radio station KFRC in San Francisco that used the same intro . " KFRC San Francisco . " was sung over the air to I.D the station before a song . My favorite DJ was the late , great , and immortal Dr. Don Rose , who worked every morning from 6AM to 10 , from 1966 to 1986 . His morning show was hilarious ! RIP Dr. Don .

  • @Medic83301 I am trying to remember KFRC It's really vague. (I remember KDIA formerly KWBR; KSOL formerly KSAN, & KYA) Please refresh my memory a little.

  • @shelovesrb7777 : It was 610 on the AM dial when I lived there and along about late 1975 , they had an FM station that simulcasted from the AM station after 8:00 at night . I think it was on 106.1 FM before it moved to the old KYUU spot at 98.1 FM in the late 90's . Do you remember Dr. Don Rose ? He was my favorite DJ at KFRC , never missed a morning that he was on the air !

  • Did a little quick internet research on Dr. Don. Looks like he was on the air during the years I first left home. Thanks, I still love Bay Area memories.

  • love this one!!!! Thank you

  • Hi Mike! Loved the whole production!

  • A great song that should get a LOT more airplay!

  • Oh, MusicMike, you did it this time. I group up listening to CKLW. Hearing the theme/intro brought up this sudden feeling in my chest....nostalgia, I guess. Thanks for taking me back to me teen years. (Oh, and thanks for the Joe Simon hit, too!)
