ISO certification is a business system that documents a process that allows companies to control, track, refine and develop an operational system. Some of the largest corporate polluters are ISO140001 certified, what does this mean? Just that they have a documented process that relates to their emissions. Under ISO 140001 companies can plan to increase their pollution each year and as long as they achieve their documented targets they continue to comply with the ISO systems based audit.
The over all aim of ISO 14001 is to help companies to reduce emissions. These companies must audit, review, document and comply with applicable legislation in order to be complient with ISO 14001.
The decision to adopt ISO 14001 is voluntary by any business or any size. However, countries in particular government can make the adoption of ISO standards mandatory if they so wish. Especially the likes of ISO 9000 standards or ISO 18000. Enterprises who do adopt ISO 14001 use it as a tool to implement their EMS. However, not all enterprises who do implement it are happy with it. Moreover, the costs involved with it (i.e certification) out way the benefits to be derived form it.
It is an initiative that came out of the Rio Earth Summit.
It is certainly not socialist because it is something that is chosen by business and paid for by business. it has nothing to do with government. The only government influence, if you can call it that, is that the businesses have to make a commitment to comply with legislation
