Pernell Roberts was garbage. He was full of himself and did not deserve the breaks he received. He sucks as an actor and a fake human being. I wish he was around so I could kick his ass.
Pernell was great actor and also Henry Darrow the unforgettable Manolito from High Chaparral. He is featured in a book about Puerto Ricans in cinema and TV by Miluka Rivera.
We can sit here forever talking about PR not knowing the complexity of the man Pernell Roberts. PR came from a humble family from a small town from Georgia with a huge inspiration to become an actor one day. PR got married four times, had one son, was the only child himself. PR is the only man I know that was able to have three ex-wives under the same roof to celebrate his life after death. I do believe PR was human, a loner that loved his solitude and was content with very little.
TheMainmannc - I do not understand your answer to me. Can you explain to me who is the she you are talking about. I know PR house in Malibu was a modest home and kind of messy one as well but that does not classify him as a giggolo cause I really do not think he was. He did at least four guest appeareance a year in different shows, live theater and then a steady income on Trapper John. I know he did not need too much to be happy.
HeatherGlen33 2 horas atrás- I will follow your advice and do some growing up as of now. Since I never had an opportunity to share a cup of coffee with PR, I do not know about his financial affairs so I can not make comment on that score. If the so called, four rich wives decided to take care of PR I assume he was worthed taking care off cause PR ex-wives were also brilliant women to allow themselves to be used and abused by a loser. The house in Malibu was his and he did have some money.
@ThePortes1234 thank you for that. All i stated was what he told me himself. and someone says what she did to me, She must of had her heart broken recently. and because he lived in Malibu people think oh huge house, he had a very modest house and from the outside it didn't look big at all..not all houses in Malibu are Mansion !!!
Henry Darrow doesn't make a whole lot of sense. "Gives up several million dollars?" Uh, Henry, in the days of Bonanza, I doubt he made even 1 million for all his work on Bonanza. Bonanza was created to show off color television and sell TVs. Not a lot of people owned televisions back then, and TV actors were not paid much at all. As for leaving Bonanza, he left because he was unhappy with the writing on the show. Many episodes of the later seasons ARE terrible, and some aren't shown anymore.
I remember that at the time people sait that he thought he was the star of the show and did not get recognition, but he was very well paid but he felt slighted somehow. Dont know if this is true but it is what I heard at the time...
The show really was'nt the same after he left, he later got replaced by ranch hand named Candy who pretty much almost became an unofficial member of the Cartwright family.
@360whiplash I was never a big "Bonanza fan", preferring "Gunsmoke" but the show was better with Pernell Roberts....way better. He provided some sort of balance that was lost when he left the series. Candy wasn't up to the job of replacing him in my opinion, and as you note he did become sort of another Cartwright. Pernell was interesting to watch and Candy? Not so much. He became a soap opera star if that says anything.
The series definitely was worse off for not having Adam. What a great and entertaining show it was. I visited the Lake Tahoe location once. Fascinating.
Unlike most people, Pernell Roberts was not driven by money or fame. He was an actor of substance with an amazing tallent and playing Adam wasn´t enough for him. All the Cartwright family where amazing but I must admit that after Pernell Roberts left , the show was never the same. Dan Blocker´s death was a huge blow as well. I admire Pernell Roberts for believe in himself and his tallent. For sure Pernell did not die as a frustrated man. He was absolutelly drop dead gorgeous.
@ThePortes1234 How does one worship a nice face? What about the character? Pernell was a fantasy. He had 4 wives. Count them. He left his horse in Bonanza, to travel with one wife at a time. They were all very wealthy. Check it out. The last still lives in Malibu. She lived a separate life while he continued to have affairs. Please. grow up. Feel sad for the wives who supported him. He was a fair actor, but nothing to remember. He some shakespear but that was to impress the ladies
I thought that the series lost a little bit when he left. He was the perfect compliment to the impetuous LIttle Joe and the bull-like Hoss. It was still a very good show, but just a hair below what it was.
@marcparella and denimore......High Chapparal couldn't hold a candle to Bonanza. They had romances with women, they just liked changing them, besides who needs girlfriends with the world's population on the rise. Save the world and become a hermit!
He did really well with Trapper John, much more successful post Bonanza career than Lorne Greene, and a much better role. He had to wait awhile for it. Of course no one could touch Michael Landon. Roberts must have figured a decreasing role on Bonanza.
@denimore1: I totally agree with you. 3 adult sons living at home -- no girlfriends -- asking their "pa" if they stay out late. And let's not forget that David Rose title music...woof.
Ben: Stood by his boys side was always ready to lend a hand and very generous Hoss: Kind hearted with great strength but was gentle with it. Little Joe Fast, witty and clever. Adam: Loved to get the Sheriff and acted bitter and moody all the time never willing to fight for what was morally right if it wasn't legally right.
@MrsOcta A couple of reasons to why Pernell Roberts left the show was that he was against white people playing Native Americans, Asians, etc. He thought that it was demeaning and felt that people of that background should play the roles. The other reason was that he got tired of playing a 30-something man who referred to his father as Pa and the fact that he had to wear a wig (Lorne Greene and Dan Blocker wore wigs) to hide his own image therefore, leaving Bonanza.
@westholmes2001 Also Pernell wanted to do movies and he felt that doing a TV series did not give him enough time to seek a movie career-Also i think the man did not like being on Bonanza anyway and wasn't happy
After doing my own research I have to agree with GinaMasera, Sorry Ghstwn. But it's apparent that Pernell would have never of gotten that chance and the man did just fine without Bonanza, Yes we will always wonder and wish about Adam Cartwright but we can't forget that Pernell was a great man and he deserves our appreciation and respect. R.I.P. Pernell, we love you and we greatly thank you.
i would have stayed. it would have been my cash cow. i would have had fun and enjoyed it. hey! it's tv and back then even with shooting about 39 episodes a year you still have plenty of time off to vacation and/or pursue other projects. he could have used the series to give him more clout so he could develop more serious acting projects.
@johnrunion He never fit in with the others anyway. The others stayed with the show because of money, I am sure...but they also were VERY connected as friends, almost like real family. I remember reading when Michael went to see Lorne in the hospital, he called him Pa. When Dan died, the other two were clearly heartbroken. I don't think Pernell (or Adam) was missed much at all.
@msymsed yes, i heard an interview with michael landon once and he said when pernell left they just took the leaf out of the table and that left that much more for the rest of them. it was sad however seeing pernell in four rode out; which has got to be one of the worst films i have ever seen. thanks for the reply/comment/info.
man, if I had a big paying gig like Pernell Roberts did with bonanza.....I would run it into the ground.....they would have to drag me out of that job by the feet while i scratched the floor with my finger nails. Hell, I'd even let Hop Sing corn hole me for that kind of money
Sort of like the original "Star Trek". That was also considered a failure but it lived on in syndication and was eventually revived.
"Ben Cartwright" was a great role for Lorne Greene, but "Commander Adama" was the role he was born to play. One of the most majestic and regal characters ever to grace the tube. Soldiering on despite immense personal tragedy and the weight and responsibility of saving humanity on his shoulders.
The short answer is always the ego trip. The rising young actor lets a little success get to his head and decides he's too good for television or that he doesn't want to get typecast.
That was a dumb move by pernell roberts to leave a top rated show like bonanza.he really shocked alot of people when he left.trapper john md. was no way as popular as bonanza.
@JettRink50 No, Roberts left because he felt the show situation was silly, and wanted to progress his career in serious acting. But, that didn't happen. He managed to find solid work again finally in Trapper John MD in the mid 1970's. All in all,..The "Leave Bonanza" decision was not well thought out.. The show was the top show of all time in 1965 when he left. He had the reins of a Golden horse in his hands, but instead of mounting it, he decided to step into the horse crap. It was his call.
@Ghstwn Unlike most people, Pernell Roberts was not driven by money or fame. Bonanza, although entertaining, was a one trick poney. Every show had the same plot - someone gets into trouble and the Cartwrights helped them out. He finally grew tired of this and returned to theatre to do some "real" acting. He had a successful theatre career before returning to another successful tv show and he will always be remembered as the eldest Cartwright. Seems like everything worked out. "WINNING"
@GinaMasera Interesting how you forgot to mention the time frame of his return to a successful series. Also all the guest spots on the major shows that followed his departure from Bonanza in order to bring in some income. And, how his theater career never returned in any signifigant manner. The scrips for Bonanza improved when Micheal Landon began writing, so they were hardly as you discrtibed for 14 years. Roberts could have easily been a part of that writing and directing had he remained.
@Ghstwn You keep speaking in terms of money and fame. Pernell was interested in neither. He was a strong advocate of civil rights and also had a problem with the show for the lack of diversity. He said in an interview that it was hard enough staying for 6 six years. I admire his decision to follow his heart instead of his wallet. If more people were interested in the quality of the programs instead of the money, there wouldn't be so much crap on television today.
@GinaMasera Well, if you can equate him into the same catagory as Muhammad Ali and the example he set for standing by your beliefs, and what he gave up for doing so,... then you have a point.
@GinaMasera Oh my. Roberts did not have to be driven by money. His 4 wives had provided that problem. The "real acting" fizzled out immediately. His "plays" were flops. He was far from successful. After a tour around the world, he was bored and took the Trapper John, show just to be on the small screen again. He was described by his co-actors as " sullen, aloof, quiet, and sardonic". You figure it out. Also check out the permanent eyeliner he had on upper lids. Sexy right?
@Ghstwn you make the most sense of any "in love" groupies who were crying and mourning in their little click. I made the remarks that his 4 wives supported him, and this allowed him to roam, and try to make a bigger splash. LOL I was "blocked" from that room, or whatever it is. I could not even give the names of his wives, and just how super wealthy they were. I am 82 years old, and I liked Bonanza, because there was no foul language..no nudity, or blatant sex. a family show.
I love Henry Darrow, by the way. As a kid, I wanted to grow up to be Manolito Montoya from "High Chaparral!" ... My favorite show, and favorite Western series theme song!
@fastertir I was 11 and visiting my grandma on her farm when I read in the paper that Dan Blocker had died of a heart attack in 1972. It really upset me because I watched every episode of Bonanza. Of course I had a crush on all the Cartwrights but each one differently. Dan Blocker died in '72 @ age 43, Michael Landon died in '91 at age 55 from cancer, Lorne Greene died in '87 @ age 72, and Pernell Roberts died just this year @ age 81. Four gorgeous men no longer gracing our earth.
@ToniHunterOne I remember when Landon was sick, when my grandma & I would be in the check out line of a grocery store, seeing all the headlines in the magazines/tabloids, etc. As a kid I had some odd notion that with all the technological advances going on, celebs, politicians (presidents, senators, etc) stars, millionaires, etc, had access to miraculous medical treatment that ordinary folks didn't (or couldn't afford). In the end, we all die the same way/from the same things. Such is life.
Isn't it curious how real such television characters seemed to us? I would have watched Bonanza in black and white on Irish television back in the sixties. Yesterday I watched an episode in colour, "Invention of a Gunfighter", made in 1964, featuring Guy Stockwell as guest star. In one scene showing Little Joe teaching the Guy Stockwell character how to use a six-gun, I was struck by the fact that both actors were left-handed, or "southpaws", as you might say in the States!
@ToniHunterOne Well-done. That was one of the most beautifully constructed and well-informed comments I've ever seen on here. I was a big fan, too, of the show and of its stars. We first saw the show on my grandmother's old black & white tv set in Glasgow, Scotland. We were children then and these wonderful role-models stood for a lot back then - oh, about three-hundred years ago...
I met Pernell back in 92, we became friends, He never liked working on bonanza, he was a Broadway star and felt like he was one of 4 stars, but wanted to be the main one, he never regretted leaving, didn't want nothing to do with it, wanted to do some of the writing, but wasn't allowed to do so, but Michael was, His stand in was a woman, didn't like that,,, he also told me that he never ever practice his lines, they fed them to him on the fly.
@TheMainmannc Pernell was never a star on Broadway. Who ever heard of him? His Shakespear was obsolete and was barely recognized. He had a handsome face while there are thousands of handsome faces on the big screen. He was a womanizing gigalo. He had 4 wives. Count them. All wealthy women. He lived on their money, while he traveled around the world. Check out his last wife still in Malibu. she led a separate life, while he sang at parties and had many girlfriends. Wake up.
First off, I Told what i know of him Personaly, i never said he was a Broadway star, he did, these were stories he told me to my ear, so if you have a problem with that then oh we.I Asked him one time if you hated Trapper John so bad Why did you take the job. He said because he needed to pay his mortgage. and as far as telling me to wake up...His personal life is his, none of mine or yours, and i guess if he lived off his wife, then she wasnt doing that good either, because he drove a V.W. VAN
He was a real Southern Gentlemen. Born here In N..C. and raised in Savannah Georgia. He and i had lunch on more than several occasions at the Chard house in Topanga, I would order him sweet acidophiles milk, he gave me an autograph picture and told me that i was the first person he has given it to in 26 years. From his mouth to my ears.
But after all their Bonanza careers faded Roberts was on TV as Trapper John so he did Ok after Bonanza. I was never a huge fan of Bonanza--old man Cartwright was a little too arrogant for my liking.
@seymourbbest what else did he do besides trapper john? Michael Landen went on to have at least two succesful shows. Little house and that angel show.
@JuanMacready - Little House won multiple awards and Michael (as well as the actors) made a fortune over the multi-year run. His 2nd show didn't run as long but also garnered a lot of fans. They might have been crap in your opinion, but most of us saw them as high quality shows; especially compared to the tripe (my opinion) that we have today that often offer little social value to our youth and adults today.
@seymourbbest also, Mr. Green went on to do battle star which was succesful in its own right. They all had a nice run after Bonanza except for Dan Blocker.
@gymer15 Not really. He was only a Cartwright for less than six years. The rest were for 14. Minus a little for Blockers death. So Adam actually died first in 1965.
Henry what a great actor

Ghstwn 11 months ago

The only 2 things good about High Chaparral were Linda Cristal and the theme song.

@ToniHunterOne it seems that everyone in Bonanza dies, maybe it's jinxed?
kissed61 1 year ago
@ToniHunterOne He didn't die of a heart attack but from a blood clot in the lung after a Gall Bladder surgery.

@ToniHunterOne

@ToniHunterOne Landon was 54.

@MasterEled Alright... three months shy of 55. Or, 54 years, 9 months. But hey, thanks!
ToniHunterOne 3 months ago
@ToniHunterOne Yeah, but it makes it sadder when you say 54 :p

@ToniHunterOne Well-done. That was one of the most beautifully constructed and well-informed comments I've ever seen on here. I was a big fan, too, of the show and of its stars. We first saw the show on my grandmother's old black & white tv set in Glasgow, Scotland. We were children then and these wonderful role-models stood for a lot back then - oh, about three-hundred years ago...
Thank you; nice comment.

AWW! I haven't seen Henry Darrow since the Zorro series when I was a little girl.

tampoco se lo extraño a Pernell Roberts, que luego de dejar la serie comenzo a criticar a sus compañeros. Muy mala actitud.
Pernell Roberts left the show then began to criticize their peers. Very bad attitude.
danielguerrerofanscl 1 year ago
But after all their Bonanza careers faded Roberts was on TV as Trapper John so he did Ok after Bonanza. I was never a huge fan of Bonanza--old man Cartwright was a little too arrogant for my liking.
seymourbbest 1 year ago
@seymourbbest what else did he do besides trapper john? Michael Landen went on to have at least two succesful shows. Little house and that angel show.
fastertlr 1 year ago
@fastertlr Pernell Roberts was on Broadway and toured with several musicals. Michael Landon's two shows were fucking CRAP.
JuanMacready 1 year ago
@JuanMacready - Little House won multiple awards and Michael (as well as the actors) made a fortune over the multi-year run. His 2nd show didn't run as long but also garnered a lot of fans. They might have been crap in your opinion, but most of us saw them as high quality shows; especially compared to the tripe (my opinion) that we have today that often offer little social value to our youth and adults today.

@ACLTony So glad he died of cancer at only 54.
JuanMacready 1 year ago
@seymourbbest also, Mr. Green went on to do battle star which was succesful in its own right. They all had a nice run after Bonanza except for Dan Blocker.
fastertlr 1 year ago
@fastertlr Geeeeeez, I wonder why Dan Blocker didn't have a successful run after Bonanza?
MelC54 1 year ago
@MelC54 I am pretty sure Dan Blocker died during Bonanza, so there was no after bonanza for him.

@Tmp2364 Yeah, no kiddin'!!!! I remember when he died, I was 18 years old .

@MelC54 Because he didn't have a successful heart near the end of Bonanza.

he stayed alive alot longer then all the other cartwrights
gymer15 2 years ago 9
@gymer15 Not really. He was only a Cartwright for less than six years. The rest were for 14. Minus a little for Blockers death. So Adam actually died first in 1965.
