I built one of these for my back yard this past summer. Make sure you check your local county ordinances and build to spec. If not, you running the risk of getting a visit from the fire marshall and quite possibly a fine. Oh, and have a fire extinguisher handy too just in case a fire gets out of control or, someone sits too close and sparks up.
These blocks where on sale this last Veterans weekend. About $2 each. I found I needed 17 per row, rather than the 16 per row you used. Either way, I am very pleased with the results. Thank you!
If you want ot keep standing water out of your pit then you need to leave the center of the pit unpaved. (unlike shown in this video). Then dig out the opening about 6-8 inches. Refill the area with 3-4 inches of drainage rock and 3-4 inches of fill dirt. The pit will then be able to drain the water properly.
@lynlee013 Good question, all the parts except the steel fire bowl would cost less than $200. However, the steel bowls come in a wide variety and cost changes significantly.
@lynlee013 by the time you spend the time and money building one of these you could purchase a nice portable fire pit from an online retailer for much less.
Watch a Pre-January 8th copy of Inception. Listen closely when the actors say imagine, reality, and safe, or point pistols. You'll hear the words, Loughner, offin' her, part of the word Giffords, and much more. Some even say they hear, do it.
@Balgore8 You could, but it would take quite a lot to knock something like this over. Not using mortar also allows you to move it if you ever want to.
what in the dam heck do ya need to build this for, i just lite a fire wherever i wants in the yard N use some rocks round the out side if i wanna get fancy
The point of mentioning the fireproof block was if you were not going to use the metal tray, and use it for an open fire pit. The fireproof block would keep the outer block from heating to a very high temp and or possibly damaging the outer stone long term. If you were going to use the metal tray. then the fireproof block is not needed.
Thanks, I wanted something that looked more permanant than a table firepit. it is a bit late now but we can see the city's fireworks from our backyard on the Fourth of July and NewYears and a firepit would be such a great way to spend the night.
I checked with my local Lowes and they don't have those stones either. Kinda lame to put it on your webpage when you don't even carry the product you are pushing.
@phil74501 I know you responded a year ago, but I was thinking the same thing. Then I found them in the garden section. Lowes has a very different catagorizing system than Home Depot, LOL!
It looks like a well. Is there a kitty down that well?

Can this be done with natural gas? just place a gas ring in the center of the bowl?

Would it be stable without mortar?

Actually, this is pretty easy and cheap. Looks nice.

Don't mix the ashes with compost or in the garden bed. Too alkaline.

Home Depot has them, Pavestone. 1.80 each. You can also by at surplus stores (residual scrap) there are ones in some towns from Habitat for Humanity.

Dry connecting the bricks...? Really? That seems fragile... What if I want to secure them more permanently, is there some kind of mortar I can use?
Balgore8 11 months ago
@Balgore8 - you could use construction adhesive or mortar / thinset.

@Balgore8 standard mortar mix (green bags) are your best bet.

They cut the video right where they were going to have to cut the bricks. Not an easy job for someone that doesn't have the right saw.

They failed to state the diamitor of the fire bowl. It's hard to believe that the bricks didn't need to be cut.

why put a lid on fire?
TheCyoruk 1 year ago
@TheCyoruk so the ash and other debris that may pop from the firewood doesn't kill you or set anything on fire
rioishikawa 1 year ago
@TheCyoruk it prohibits sparks from flying off into your surroundings and setting fire elsewhere.
