@jasque Because for Vincent and Catherine to go to that next level would've ruined the magic of their relationship. It was the whole "impossible love" scenario that made the series so popular. When they replaced Linda Hamilton on the show it killed it because the magic ended.
Thank you for sharing, loved this series when it was first shown, happy memories of Vincents love for Catherine shame real life is not like that, least we can dream.
@panchelbel007 LOL ... true. I love that moment. Someone please tell/remind me why it is difficult for Catherine to marry Vincent and live down below? I mean there have to be tunnels for her to go to work and back home. Rent a cheap apartment for a home address or something. Or Catherine is simply afraid to leave what she is familiar with?
@jasque - They DID consider it at several points in the show. They bring it up at least in "A Happy Life" and "Orphans," each time giving excuses for it. Kind of weak ones, but they did think about it, at least. First, Vincent didn't think Catherine could really reach the potential she was capable of if she lived below. Second, Father didn't really approve of the idea (for reasons I cannot fathom). Still, it was all complete crap. They should have just ended the second season with that.
@panchelbel007 Exactly my thoughts. The reasons were so weak that I can't see why Catherine can't live Below and still work Above. Even with the decline number of viewers and expensive budget per episode, they should at least give us a happy ending. This show was beautiful compared to what we have on TV today and what a way to destroy our beautiful fantasy.

I love the story of Oliver Twist. And I love to see it given shape in this new form. Great. I'm truly grateful.
