The Pitcairn Islands have an elected assembly responsible for almost all island affairs as well, despite having a population of only 67. George, you need to realise that democracy can exist in any body of people, no matter how small. It exists in the Falklands, and the majority (that is to say, absolutely everybody) have decided that they want to remain British. They speak English, not a variant as Galloway claims. If you believe in democracy, then you support the Falklanders. End of Story.
3000 troops...? Last time I checked (which was two minutes ago), we had 1600 troops, (with only around 500-600 of them being combat troops. Then there's the 150 or so Falkland Islands Defence Force troops. Yes, we have fighter aircraft, but it seems that Galloway is fudging the figures a bit. The Falklands actually have a population of 3000, with an elected assembly responsible for all affairs aside from defence. There are smaller democracies in the world, such as the Pitcairn Islands.
What about other islands like St. Helena in the Atlantic? Or what about St. Pierre and Miquelon off the coast of Canada? Do you think such places should be required to become part of the nearest country?

That task force was sent to save Thatcher's political career (in the same way in which Argentina people was manipulated by the Junta). Check the Falklands 2010 census. Most of the people now there (excluding military) were not even born there. It is ridiculous to avoid looking for a common solution.

Argentina was not a colonial power; the indigenous popoulation helped the war effort against Spain (which was the colony) for the independence cause and several restrictions imposed by the colony on them were abolished by the first independent government in Argentina.

@daverowbotham No, it not a typo. 1983. British Nationality Act 1983. Before 1983, the UK did not grant British citizenship to the islanders. That is why I do not fully understand the statement "the war was to protect our people in the islands" (or the self-determination) given by Thatcher (and others since then), when the UK itself did not recognize them as British citizens in the first place back then.

The real issue is the fishery rights benefiting the Executive Council members who beat the drum and pass the bill to the UK tax payer. My view, at least.

That is another argument to discredit the Executive Members talking about militaristic actions by Argentina.

Request a public enquiry in order to determine how many of the Falklands Executive Council (in charge of the fishery rights) members have stakes in the fishery industry there. The Pitcairn Islands have an elected assembly responsible for almost all island affairs as well, despite having a population of only 67. George, you need to realise that democracy can exist in any body of people, no matter how small. It exists in the Falklands, and the majority (that is to say, absolutely everybody) have decided that they want to remain British. They speak English, not a variant as Galloway claims. If you believe in democracy, then you support the Falklanders. End of Story.

3000 troops...? Last time I checked (which was two minutes ago), we had 1600 troops, (with only around 500-600 of them being combat troops. Then there's the 150 or so Falkland Islands Defence Force troops. Yes, we have fighter aircraft, but it seems that Galloway is fudging the figures a bit. The Falklands actually have a population of 3000, with an elected assembly responsible for all affairs aside from defence. There are smaller democracies in the world, such as the Pitcairn Islands.

@temporaldisplacement I do not accept that task force was sent in order to protect the rights of the islanders when they did even have the right to British citizenship until 1983. That task force was sent to save Thatcher's political career (in the same way in which Argentina people was manipulated by the Junta). Check the Falklands 2010 census. Most of the people now there (excluding military) were not even born there. It is ridiculous to avoid looking for a common solution.

Argentina was not a colonial power; the indigenous popoulation helped the war effort against Spain (which was the colony) for the independence cause and several restrictions imposed by the colony on them were abolished by the first independent government in Argentina.

@MrBillyt12345 You are wrong. Argentina claimed the islands since 1833, using non - violent ways.It's not something just "came up" in 1982. We claimed in every international organization and since 1960 when the UN was founded. We never stoped claiming them. Nobody said islanders won't be british if we recuperate the islands. We can discuss that and find a solution for them, but we can't if the UK still refuses any dialogue.

It concerns self determination. Britain makes no claims over the Falklands, it's up to the islanders themselves. If they want to become part of Argentina, that's their business, just the same if they want to remain British. End Of.

@daverowbotham No, it not a typo. 1983. British Nationality Act 1983. Before 1983, the UK did not grant British citizenship to the islanders. That is why I do not fully understand the statement "the war was to protect our people in the islands" (or the self-determination) given by Thatcher (and others since then), when the UK itself did not recognize them as British citizens in the first place back then.

@daverowbotham You can check the 2006 census of the island. More than 60% of the people living in the islands then were not born there (Santa Helena, UK, Chile, Australia/NZ, even Argentina). The self-determination case, in my humble view, considering that for 150 years these people were not considered British citizens, do not fly. The real issue is the fishery rights benefiting the Executive Council members who beat the drum and pass the bill to the UK tax payer. My view, at least.

Now India wanted it's independence, and it got it, as did all our former colonys *except* those who wanted to remain part of the UK. Sure, it turns out there is oil and fish, so what? @daverowbotham About back down, I think it is absolutely possible following US pressure (Suez episode). Even in 1982 US wanted no war. About nuclear arms, you can't use nuclear arms here. But that is another point: Argentina (like Brazil) have nuclear technology since 1974. They face each other and the last thing in their minds is to build a bomb (although they could do it). That is another argument to discredit the Executive Members talking about militaristic actions by Argentina.

Request a public enquiry in order to determine how many of the Falklands Executive Council (in charge of the fishery rights) members have stakes in the fishery industry there. According to Der Spiegel in 2006, all of them. Not sure now. But that is a clear conflict of interest and may help to understand all this paranoia about Argentina looking for a new war. It is manipulation of the public opinion by a group of rich people.

It is like if Mr. Cameron owns a participation in a company that would build a highway with public funds and he has a say on thr contract.These people are the main reason for which a better relationship is not developed: their own financial interests could be lost. Since the end of the 2001 crisis, Argentina is now the 25th ecomony in the word, put 1 M out of poverty, GDP growth average since 2002 is 7%. Sure, still way to do but there is a path. UK? 1.2 M un-employed in Sep08, 1.8 M in May09, 2.3M in Jun10 and 2.6 M now with a projection of 3M people out of work for next year as the GDP projection is just 0.9% for this year (best case).
