  • 1968年、サド&メルオーケストラの勇姿~分厚い管楽器群~それにしても、ペッパー・アダムスの吹き上げること!!~ピアノはハナさん! #jazzm

  • look at all of those hip glasses..

  • Pepper Adams' solo was unbelievable - I must have watched 2:00 to 4:40 about 10 times now.

Does he have electrical tape on the top of his bari though? haha

  • 1 person had to play this song in band ( I did also but i like this song)

  • I had this uncomfortable dream ..... I was playing in a band with Pepper Adams and I had to follow his solo ....

  • How can one band have so many geniuses and charismatic dudes????

The bari player is INSANE! ...love those glasses too!

  • Awesome musicianship--really classy and always swinging. A once in a generation phenonemon!

  • Does anybody know where I can get this Video?

  • Richard Davis rules!

  • When I heard this big band for the first time I began to dance in the street. This is real jazz. Huge thank you to you guys.

  • Love the sound of that bari!!

  • C Y M B A L S

  • Oops, I meant Slingerland drums, but who cares ? Mel had THE sound.

  • That was something. Mel played a time on a crash ride, a 20 medium ride and a swish knocker Zildjian for the drummers who ask. I have only one LP of TJML with UMO and I'm impressed by his sound, deep and powerful without hitting hard. He heard this sound and produced it, the Gretsch drums don't explain all ! I'm also very impressed by Thad's compositions. Does a song book exist ? I agree, this is ZE Big Band (in french).

  • Not to forget that Mel loved and used those calf skins.

    His drums always sounded great.

If you want to hear some of the best sounding drums Mel had, check out the album called "Naturally".

It has THE best version of Cherry Juice I've heard yet ~

  • Or it could be: Thad Jones, Mel Lewis (ldr), Jerry Dodgion (f, as), Jerome Richardson (as), Eddie Daniels, Joe Henderson (ts), Pepper Adams (bar), Danny Moore, Al Porcino, Richard Williams, Snooky Young (t), Thad Jones (fh), Eddie Bert, Astley Fennell, Jimmy Knepper (tb), Cliff Heather (btb), Roland Hanna (p), Richard Davis (b), Mel Lewis (d)

  • Here's the line-up direct from the DVD cover.

tpts - Snooky, Danny, Jimmy Nottingham, Richard Williams.

tb - Eddie Bert, Benny Powell, Jimmy and Cliff.

sax - Jerome, Pepper, Jerry, Seldon Powel, Eddie.

bass - Richard Davis. Piano - Roland.

Thad and Mel drums and flg, or course.

Tunes on the DVD are Central Park North, Come Sunday, Groove Merchantr and Once Around.

    This was filmed in 1969.

  • The DVD must be wrong. That's Al Porcino on trpt. not Jimmy Nottingham and Joe Henderson on tenor sax (not Seldon)

  • Recorded from a European tour in late 1969: Thad Jones, Mel Lewis (ldr), Jerry Dodgion (f, as), Jerome Richardson (as), Eddie Daniels, Joe Henderson (ts), Pepper Adams (bar), Danny Moore, Al Porcino, Marvin Stamm, Snooky Young (t), Thad Jones (fh), Jimmy Knepper, Benny Powell, Julian Priester (tb), Bob Burgess (btb), Roland Hanna (p), Richard Davis (b), Mel Lewis (d)

  • Great baritone solo indeed. Pepper Adams was one of a kind. Thanks for this great video.

    Bruno "Brewd" Leicht

  • Man, this gave me goosebumps! I sure do miss Pepper.

  • Its a joy to watch Mel Lewis playing and to hear his great, full sound.

  • I love the sequence of looks given from about 3:45 to 3:53... I have to wonder what that was all about... looks worried, surprised, and then ticked like well thank god you pulled yourself out of that one... I have to wonder what it was all about! Awesome video and music....

  • Where can I buy this video ?

  • I'll second that. Please share!

  • we were all so young ...we were all so beautiful...once upon a time...long ago

  • Brings back memoeries of hearing the band time and again in the 60's and 70's at the Vanguard. Damn still sounds great.

  • They didn't call Pepper Adams "The Knife" for nothing! JYEAH

  • One of the greatest big band charts of all time.

One of the truly great bands of all time, as well.

    Mel Lewis was a Master.

    Superb ~

  • The Jones/Lewis Orchestra is still total magic.
