I'm a diehard fan of Journey's classic glory days with Steve Perry and I've watched the 1981 Houston "Escape Tour" concert DVD to death. The funny thing is how in just 3 short years, they went from wearing nice suits on stage to zebra striped T-shirts and ripped 80s jeans =) Amusing....

What you guys have to realize is that Steve Perry lost his voice a long time ago and is not coming back. Arnel is the reason why Journey is still here so stop hating. (I have mad respect for Steve Perry though)
Steve Perry sang effortlessly, real singing without electronics to cover imperfections. He has a sweet sound. Arnel can sing too unfortunately, he is brought in to fill in Perry's place and thats a tall order. Back in those days Rock Bands had frontmen who could really sing and hold a note! He still looks yummy and Neal Schon too.
I have loved Journey for 30+ years. Steve has an amazing voice. I admit I'm not a fan of them since Steve left but their Steve years are awesome. Rock on Steve.
I really wasn't all that familiar with Journey when I actually happened to stumble onto this very show on PBS one evening. My brother-in-law at the time had the album Evolution and he wet ahead and gave it to me. And so was the beginning of my long journey with Journey. People can complain about Perry this or Arnel that, but myself I want Neal to grow his hair back and keep rocking.

I saw this tour. When Gregg Rollie left in 1980 and Johathan Caine joined, the sound changed for the worst. Caine wasn't as good a singer. When Rollie left, the Hammond left too. The sappy songs followed as well.

For those that think Perry is Journey, 1 you wre not alive back in the day. You have no idea of what was going down then, 1975 rock was turning into "Disco" radio would not play music with 5-9 minute tracks. We were being drowned with the Carpenters, Abba and the like. The first Journey was like " underground music" The media was against rock.. Perry was the turning point of a huge fan base sure, I have always like both Journey's. But the first three albums hold that place...
I think that Steve Perry can never be replaced when it comes to Journey's classics. The best that the group can do is make sure that they do the classics in the way people will always remember Journey.
However, Journey has moved on because they have released new material and are in the process of making even more new material. With that, the band has a chance to turn the page and add to their legacy without Perry. People need to move on with this issue just like the band and Steve Perry have.

I saw this tour. When Gregg Rollie left in 1980 and Johathan Caine joined, the sound changed for the worst. Caine wasn't as good a singer. When Rollie left, the Hammond left too. The sappy songs followed as well.

For those that think Perry is Journey, 1 you wre not alive back in the day. You have no idea of what was going down then, 1975 rock was turning into "Disco" radio would not play music with 5-9 minute tracks. We were being drowned with the Carpenters, Abba and the like. The first Journey was like " underground music" The media was against rock.. Perry was the turning point of a huge fan base sure, I have always like both Journey's. But the first three albums hold that place...

I think that Steve Perry can never be replaced when it comes to Journey's classics. The best that the group can do is make sure that they do the classics in the way people will always remember Journey.
However, Journey has moved on because they have released new material and are in the process of making even more new material. With that, the band has a chance to turn the page and add to their legacy without Perry. People need to move on with this issue just like the band and Steve Perry have.

Journey was always a great band, even before Steve Perry joined. Personally I like the Perry/Rolie years best, but they've had great singers in recent years, which has allowed them to continue playing fantastic live shows.
Each singer whose stepped into the Journey lineup exposes themselves to a tremendouse amount of critiquing simply by having to live up to Perry's legacy. That can't be easy.
