@TheFrameoff I enlarged one of the primary air inlets enough to get my propane torch tip down inside the burn pot. I pour about 1/2 cup of kerosine in pot (usually, I place a piece of used paper towel also to act as a wick). I place pot in position and open oil inlet valve and wait until I see oil flowing into pot (it can take a while if it is very cold). Then I insert lit torch down through hole and light mixture and adjust fuel flow as desired. Hope this helps.
@TheFrameoff hi i built one of these heaters, i havent installed a secondary drum inside yet, i get a far bit of black smoke, it runs nice and hot, 700 degress in no time, i copied spikes plans, why do you think it smokes black, a rich mixture, but is i turn the oil down it aventually goes out, any suggetions thanks
@MCFD1127 Good luck on your project! Please post so I an see/learn too! FYI - I went back to the smaller drums. The large brake drums took way to long to provide any substantial heat, whereas I can get very good heat from the smaller brake drums in about 15 minutes. Regards.
Hi, I am going to have a go at making my own WOB.
I will be using different materials for the main body instead of brake drums that you guys have used. I am hopeing to incorporate a water heating jacket to exterior and also an internal water heating chamber that will act as a secondary burning chamber. I will leave areas of the main body exposed to have heat for my workshop, I know it sounds funny to be taking the heat from the workshop and using it to heat water, but our winters are mild.
@gersher1266 Even without the inner brake drum, it would take longer to heat simply due to the increased mass of the larger brake drums. The thought on the inner brake drum was to create another combustion chamber. Hot, unburned gasses would be caught in the inner brake drum and have another opportunity to be burned, instead of just going up the chimney. The benefit of the added mass is that once up to temperature, I can let the fire go out and still have substantial heat for over an hour. Txs!
@Kntryhart Super burner! Do you have accurate dimensions of the all parts including the number location on the tube and size of the holes etc. Thanks.
@Widget1952 Suggest you review ozzirt's videos and related links. He has done a super job explaining how he built his unit. He has 12 years of experience with this type unit. Not taking advantage of his knowledge and experience would be a mistake. I do not have plans. I looked at other units on YouTube, then built this. If you have specific questions, I would be happy to supply the info. My other waste oil heater video gives pretty good construction details.
explain the ignition system you have for it. Please and thank you

do you think that the internal drum is making it take longer to heat up , If so I dont see the need for this new modification.

This is impressive to run that long and have that little carbon is impressive.

@marthale7 Yes, I have been impressed on how well it operates. There is no smoke, no smell, it burns very well. Thanks for the comment!
