@TheDragon1230 i used my old glass cleaning sponge and jammed it on the outlet part of my large wisper filter xD I had to clean it every week.. poopy goldfish lol
Hey a aquestion im gonna buy an air pomp and making a Gravel cleaner
now i gonna make a gravel cleaner connected to the air pomp the air pomp sucks the water into the bottle white the gravel, filter sponge and the straw i have some holes in the bottle to let the clean water out wil lthat work ?
Nice video, quick easy to understand instuctions. Didn't quite understand the charole set up? You just stuff the hose in that green thing and where does the water exit ?
By the way, most aquarium gravel is smooth so it doesn't have a lot of room for bacteria colonies. Dollar store scrubbies are a lot better. Much more surface area. And you don't need the charcoal unless you're removing odors (which you shouldn't have anyways in a healthy tank), or medications and discolorations.
Thanks so much for this video! I have a snail breeding tank and my filter for it broke and I really didn't want to buy another filter just for a snail tank. I'm going to empty it out and run the fountain pump into it.
Hey, I'm serious man. You try hooking up a 4000lph pump to a plastic coke bottle and turning it on! Come to think of it, I might give it a go. Would make a brilliant youtube vid. NASA, I'm coming to get you :-)
@Elitetank87 haha yeah. I lost it when I heard that, too. If you have any fountains lying around in your house. Ooh, I have that marble thing in my hallway and the Roman thing out the back, but they're both being used to store my excess champagne at the moment.
I had to remove the fish from my garden pond before it got filled in. Since my nearest pet shop is 50 miles away and the pond used a couple of pumps, this looks an ideal solution to my filtration problems. Just one question. What would be the proportions for size of bottle vs power of pump? I reckon the biggest pump I have would cause a 2 litre coke bottle to explode.
Ironicly, the powerhead that i needed to do this was more expensive than a filter 15 gallons larger than the one i was planning on making a filter for.
it works great and oxygenates my tank too! i was lucky to know that i had an old fountain pump in my garage except i was confused about how to keep the water from leaking out of the bottle when i cut it open so i first put tape around it and then hot glued it and it leaks but it doesn't leak. like when i fill it it leaks but when it's in action filtering it doesn't so that's kinda cool. but thanks i really needed a way to get bennificial bacteria in my tank quick!!!
these used to go by the name "corner filter" in the old days. They do work well, but they get clogged quickly. I am still in search for that wonderful filter which filters well, yet has little to no maintenence. I've yet to find it.
Awesome vid, and a great idea but you should probably put the filter further away from the filter output so you dont suck up clean water. keep making vids!!
Thank you for making the video. WEll done. Short, sweet and to the point. As a matter of fact I have a pump from a fountain lying around the house. All I need is some activated charcol and filter mesh!
It depends on the quality of the sponge I guess. I personally had success using a sponge bought from a supermarket and used it in my HOB filter. However, some people say it's toxic and will kill fish, again this once again reiterate how the quality of the sponge plays a role...Best thing for you or anyone else is, don't be cheap. It's better safe than sorry, go to your LFS and buy a proper sponge or a filter pad.
Gravity pulls the water down to the filter, ok now...how would water (in the filter) flow back into the tank if the filter is placed below the water line of the fish tank?
That contraption looks like a disaster waiting to happen. Hope you have good homeowners insurance when it floods your house and buckles that $3,000.00 hardwood floor.
A GREAT back-filter costs $19.99 online. Just plug it in and sit back. It will last 10 years and never cause you grief.
@coochie2u do you know ANYTHING about aquariums, first of all that tank cannot be larger than a 30 gallon tank with weighs no more than a piece of furniture. Second, back-filter?? Do you mean HOB filter...and on plugging it in and "sitting back" any filter needs at least monthly rinsing and media changes about every 3 months.
Thanks for sharing. A good sample of something easy to make and very helpful. Cheers. I will start gathering the items you have described and will try to duplicate your work.
