Well to be fair, Siri is in BETA and Apple already said it won't be able to open apps for now. Who knows if the iOS 5.1 will open Siri to 3rd party developers. But at least it can still open apple apps such as calendar, contacts, clock, safari, message, YouTube, weather, email, music, and maps. I think that's already good for a beta.

Siri is no doubt some great work but being able to talk to your phone like a person is nothing more than a gimmick. Why would i want to say "send a text to blah" instead of "text blah". The one main thing that Siri does have on Tellme is the calendar interaction. I hope that TellMe catches up in that aspect. Many a Apple Fanboi has posted videos showing how siri is better but it is just that they are using siri's commands instead of Tellme. That said Siri is more advanced but for a gimmick

The problem with the "app opening" command is that it is not actually useful. Voice command is really useful for task when you don't actually have the device in your hand (handsfree) or for commands that normally require an considerable amount of precision clicking, like creating a meeting or typing the particular thing you want to search in google. Having a Voice command is then efficient. But for opening a particular app, it is actually longer to ask for it than going and clicking on the icon.

The "teen anal" one which was deemed a huge fail was exactly what I had told all the fanboys all along - it was optimising for a web search. The original voice was used here, and as you see, it was perfectly fine when used in a proper context.
A computer voice in the end is nothing different from an isolated test of one person's accent in one scenario, which has already been proven to be a result of abusing the design of TellMe.

@Unimatrix5 I don't think anyone is pretending that TellMe is currently a natural language system, and it's obviously the way forwards as we strive to create simpler and better experiences. You're pretty much spot on, as an example of what I mean I wouldn't want Microsoft to start filtering "18+ searches" without providing the option to turn it off (and with Windows Phone, they seem to prefer to remove options altogether) since it will obviously backfire in many scenarios.

Uh dude you do realize there is such a thing as an Australian, English (UK) and American accent? Almost all voice activated products have an issue with recognising Australian Accents infact Siri only recently was updated to be able to recognise it and the Microsoft Kinect didn't even allow you to use the voice function in Australia for over a year because of this.
Using a computerized voice to control your phone doesn't prove that it works with an Australian Accent.

I can honestly say the public has rejected it. When Apple sold more iPhone 4s’ in one quarter, than Microsoft’s partners sold Windows mobile phones in the last year. The problem with the "app opening" command is that it is not actually useful. Voice command is really useful for task when you don't actually have the device in your hand (handsfree) or for commands that normally require an considerable amount of precision clicking, like creating a meeting or typing the particular thing you want to search in google. Having a Voice command is then efficient. But for opening a particular app, it is actually longer to ask for it than going and clicking on the icon.

For example, you can't tell TellMe in one shot to 'text simone i'll be late'
you can to first, highlight right funcitons, then say 'text simone' then say 'ill be late'

One phone obviously did better at deciphering what was being said than the other. One phone failed with a particular task using a particular voice and another did not. End of story. The "teen anal" one which was deemed a huge fail was exactly what I had told all the fanboys all along - it was optimising for a web search. The original voice was used here, and as you see, it was perfectly fine when used in a proper context.
A computer voice in the end is nothing different from an isolated test of one person's accent in one scenario, which has already been proven to be a result of abusing the design of TellMe.

@thechadaddy There is always progress in improvment, but I guess what you mean is that product design should not be influenced by the irrational perceptions of the masses, however in this particular case there is a flaw in Microsofts approach to Tellme (no AI) and whatever irrational perceptions arise from that must be a concern for MIcrooft.

You're pretty much spot on, as an example of what I mean I wouldn't want Microsoft to start filtering "18+ searches" without providing the option to turn it off (and with Windows Phone, they seem to prefer to remove options altogether) since it will obviously backfire in many scenarios.

Uh dude you do realize there is such a thing as an Australian, English (UK) and American accent? Almost all voice activated products have an issue with recognising Australian Accents infact Siri only recently was updated to be able to recognise it and the Microsoft Kinect didn't even allow you to use the voice function in Australia for over a year because of this.
Using a computerized voice to control your phone doesn't prove that it works with an Australian Accent.
