There have been castrati since the IX century and male altos, male sopranos and countertenors since the XIV century. Luc's great but this has been done for more than a thousand years. The oldest castrato recording dates from the 1904, search for 'Alessandro Moreschi' (btw I'm NOT saying Luc is an actual castrato, just making a point).
