ha, I've tried, and its not easy. The thing is the only real piano in the song is the crazy little bit during the vocal breaks, which doesn't really justify changing the setup, to me. It is somewhat due for an update though, I've learned a lot more of Karn Evil (first half of 2nd and 3rd impressions), and most of Tarkus (which does have some 2 handed craziness on piano).
What do you think of the new XK1 that they released? It's like half the price of the XK3c and seems like a good starting point for a poor college student like me.
However, it only has a half array of drawbars, which worries me. Seems like it would cheapen the experience of getting into Hammonds if it lacks certain capabilities of the more expensive version.
Dude you're the guy that sent me that link to the site with all the ELP transcriptions! I can't believe I stumbled upon this video. Sweet organ by the way, I've got an XK-2
Okay, sorry... after doing a little research, I can see that my questions don't really make sense. I didn't know that all Hammonds are electronic. Just disregard my previous posts. :)
What I should be asking is, what's a good but inexpensive starter Hammond? Should I go for digital or not, and are modern Hammonds as small as your average digital keyboard (I don't have a lot of space)?
Heh, well its a real hammond. What you see on the bottom is a Hammond XK3 and the one on top is a MIDI controller acting as a second manual, so all the sound is generated by the Hammond. I can get a GREAT tarkus sound out of it too.
Well, that is to say its a digital keyboard made by Hammond. It uses the same sound generator as the new B3, but its just a keyboard. New, its not really within a college student budget (I'm a college student myself), but I got mine on ebay, and it only cost me about a third of my summer earnings!
Very good, you can definetely deal with KE's masterpiece, but there are many wrong notes in your transcription (for example the contrapuntal part of the intro is a little bit messy).
You shouldn't go ahead with the practice of the number until each bar is "approved"....I know it's difficult, we all want to play the whole piece as soon as possible!!!
Dude, if you can play that piece you have serious talent. Get a job!! (doing that).

That's freaking great. Where did you get a keyboard that does such an accurate Hammond sound?

Ahh, sorry. Both look like digital keyboards. I'm not that familiar with organs, and I didn't see the body of the Hammond under the keyboard.
Is it possible to get a cheap Hammond anywhere - say, on a college student's budget? I'd love to try to apply my mediocre piano skills to it.

Geez, that sounds like a lot.
I didn't know that Hammond has gone digital. What's the cheapest non-digital Hammond Organ you can get, and how small do they come?
I don't really know a lot about Hammond. I just have a casual interest. What's the B3? Is that digital, or is it a real organ?

VERY Impressive. And without music. Few can duplicate Emerson's work. great job.

Thanks. Just to be fair though, I used sheets to learn it, just not when I play it.
bowserb61 3 years ago
I'm sure Emerson used sheets to learn it too.

Great job so far. It sounds really good to me. I'll bet you'll do great on the rest of it too. Keep it up man!

Cool,
You see, if you learn from Keith Emerson, your in good hands.
