This is so hard to watch, I feel a sinking feeling in my heart when he makes that impact. Rest In Peace buddy, what a way to go. At least they made a point of honoring him during the lighting ceremonies. What an honor. Poor, poor boy, he was only a kid.....
that curve was a serious defect. Sue the shit out of them, so it hopefully does not happen again. they should not race on that track until it is redesigned!!!!!!!
Shame on the idiots who built the track! That is a sharp curve and there are metal poles on the side idiots! At that speed, nobody think about potential danger? A cheap safety net or/and the metal poles covered with foam would save poor guy's life! Hope the family will sue the smart "engineering". From NBC quote "like no other place on Earth". Yeah, right.....
I'm not sure what you are saying is true. He was pronounced dead there, but that's different. More importantly, I believe he lost consciousness. This is very important because to him, subjectively, when his head hit the pole, that would've switched the lights out, so to speak.
See it the way you may want, but the section where the accident happened is not well designed and as a result of the poor design,...... super un-safe. I don't understand the reason why the poles area is not isolated. Just an stupid design.....of a some million dollars........who design the track?
the only thing they could really do is put a smooth wall up their so that u slide across it in case of a freak thing like that. this way, you might get unjured, but atleast you'll live to talk about it....
I have to agree, I mean the Olympic Committee doesn't always put the utmost into safety, but you're not going to pad cement enough that hitting it headfirst at 80-90 you're not going to die.
Yeah but almost anything would have given him a better chance then the steel poles they had lined up. Freak accidents do happen, but still I can't see how they thought nobody would ever come flying out of there.
i agree that the poles should have been padded, but honestly at the speed he was going even if they were padded he probably would have died anyway. the force is just too hard. poor guy.
Do you really think padding a concrete post is going to help? These people are going about 80-90 MPH........padding isnt going to help that.......im sure he broke his neck or had severe head trauma, death was probally instant. This isnt tiddlywinks, this is a dangerous sport and the participants are aware of the danger, just like any form of racing, its not the fall that kills you, its the sudden stop........
i dont know the sport of luge that well...but for goodness sakes why was'nt those beams padded out!??!?!?!?gosh shock n horror at some bastards neglect..especially coming off a bend at the speeds you would expect...someone needs fucking for this obvious lack of thought and consideration when this run was designed...RIP BRAVE ATHLETE.
those poles weren't padded because people are retarded and the ones who built it aren't the ones racing in it so as long as they have the mighty dollar their work is done
@WhackTheSack I agree. This is a perfect example of capitalism over safety of others. Also Im sure this vid will be taken down in about 2 minutes as the Olympic Committee has a group dedicated to taking videos of this clip down ASAP.
I purposely searched to find this video. The idea itself couldn't form what had happened. It's not dishonoring Nodar Kumaritashvili by posting what happened, just spreading information some people want to know. How, by utter curiosity, did you stumble upon this video?
He came down very steeply then at 0:12 ran into that corner which launched him.

Looks like he died when he hit the pole but yet the reports say he died at the hospital.

It looks like at 0:14 he has just realized he's leaving the ice track. I wonder how long that dreadful second lasted? At least it was a quick death.

only thing that would of saved him would of been higher walls, safety pads won't save your life at 140 Km/hr. i feel bad for that team

That is freaking crazy, should be some sort of safety device there, pads, higher wall, something.

@jasonha82 Pads would do nothing at that speed. It is sad that he died, obviously, but these guys know the kind of danger they're getting into.
