Watch crows from a safe distance and listen to the calls they make and then try to imitate them later. Record them for future reference. carefully note their behavior as they call. If they fly away in a panic-know this call but never imitate it.It is more effective than a scare crow!
You cannot just blow into a crow call like a trumpet-you will never get a true crow tone. This sounds like a young crow just out of the nest. Even so not fully accurate. You need to listen to actual crows an dtry imitating them. They do not sound high pitched at all-notice?
@holladaysfantasy Thanks for the tip, tried that on some others & It makes them squeal so It doesn't work on every different one, just try different ways I suppose ??
@gunvidder I have tried 4 different brands/models and more air pressure works on all of them for me. Also try "growling" into the call and/or rolling your tongue while using it for different sounds. Listen to the crows and try to imitate the sounds they make. I have the H.S. Strut Hammerin Crow call and it works great.
@holladaysfantasy The growling bit is the hard one, sometimes it's easy & just happens but mostly It just doesn't happen. Some calls are easier to get the sound, all down to the individuall I think ??
just got my caller today the same one as in this video ,when you blow it purr like a cat ,and it will give the growl sound ,and a short hard blow will give the sound of the jackdaw ,have you got yours apart yet maybe you could let me know
@cressy7isback i put it in hot water for 10 min and then slowly pushed the mouth piece through the horn in the vice with a cloth on the jaws and then you can part the mouth peace more towards the tip were you blow and it is a bit deeper ,
@vault41 How did you guess Anyway I'm not the only one who hasn't a clue, that's why I tried several calls to find the easiest to learn how to do it properly. No one is an expert before their first attempt. No one can become an expert with a bad call & I have found that there are many calls that need an expert to get the best from them. That no help for someone looking for their first caller, doesn't know what to expect & needing all the help they can get to avoid sounding like a Duck or worse.
I still prefer the sound of my Buck Expert 68XT. REALLY easy to use, just have to blow like a "vrrrraaa - vrrrrraa" for a calling, "vrrrrooo - vrrrrrooo" for anwsering, and a "rrroooo - rrrrooo" to do the male. Sounds always right! 1st try, 1st hit! If it's hard to use, I'm a crow caller god! loll Only 27$CAN here.
Don't give up! I was pissed off when I bought mine because it sounded like a duck! The instructions were not written very well, in my opinion, but it works. The 'diaphragm' action didn't work that great, but if you actually growl into it from your throat, as opposed to blowing into it. I think the secret, like so many things, is in persistance and practice, M8.
It is a good call, I'm sure like most other calls you must just practice with it. Some calls will just work better for certain people. I have had very good luck with it. At least here in the US it also is a very cheap call, that makes it well worth trying.

Blow harder. You need a little more air pressure to make it sound proper.
