I remember working in a shop where in 10 years the only time the AS400 went down was by operator error or deliberate IPL (reboot for you younger folks).
Obviously that box was made back in the day when manufacturers made quality components. They certainly don't make them like they used to. What a great IBM advertisement!
Don't need spectacular hardware to do this. I had an old junker 486 SLC system running Netware 3 that got lost in a retail furniture shop for 4 years. No maintenance, nothing, just kept working. The new owners tracked me down and asked where the hell it was, so I called in and showed them. The room it was in had become a storeroom and it took about 3 hours to empty it out sufficiently to get the the old clunker server. For those in the know - Freedom & Cooks. :)
