blow the cells empty of accumulated hydrogen gas is my suggestion .. good safety precaution .. other wise if you got a weak mixture of H2 and air in there and you introduce a spark somehow .. it'll rocket the electrolyte out and into your face .. should really wear a full face plastic protector around open battery cells at all times .. we're only human and it's only a matter of time before you go looking inside the cell with a bic lighter. Safety first - disfigurement last.
