trevor's talento start to fly on this album, then he is the famous producer of pop music as we know, good job,and i don't know he plays fret bass here,great...........
Drama was my second Yes album after an initial 2 weeks of 90125 hitting my ears. I'm so glad that I developed a love and attachment to both misunderstood gems, especially Drama.
"Run Through The Light" is pure Classic Yes. Questioning, spiritual lyrics, chunky bass, celestial keyboards, and Steve Howe's crystalline pedal steel on that magical, perfect outro...
@TheProgNerd Well said sir. I'll only add that if the musical currents were running in a different direction in the late 70's early 80's this album would have received a completely different reception upon release.
I like this album because it was a different direction and different sound yet in the same spirit of Yes, always finding new sounds. Yeah this album came out in 1980 and we are in 2011, but the sounds still is solid compared to stuff that Trevor Rabin has produced with the band (YesWest). I think Trevor Horn, of the Buggles fame, was a great mix with Yes.
Trevor Horn had already written most of the songs for this album when he was asked to sing after Jon left. He was hesitant, but figured since "the Buggles" were on break, he agreed. Chris Squire is (and always has) playing Bass.
@divinedgar you're right- pulled out my albums & it says Trevor Horn:Lead Vocals, bass on "Run Through The Light" (supporting Lyrics)...
Well, after near 19 yrs of CD's and mp3 players, It's tough to recall what all went on in most of the Greatest Classic/Prog/Alt/Rock groups ('til I pull out old VHS tapes I've collected. But all videos show Horn at the mic & Squire playin' bass. Excellent album, though it took me awhile to get used to the fact Jon & Rick left. I was 19 then. thx divinedgar
It's not necessarily the absence of Jon that diminishes this album's standing in the line up of YES albums - as much as the complete different writing. I enjoy this album, but when you think about the YES that we enjoyed in the '70s, the last real YES album was Tormato. They never really recovered the magic - even with the classic lineups.
'I do not like the reappearance of The Jesuits ... If ever there was a body of men who merited damnation on earth and in hell, it is this society of Loyola's. Nevertheless, we are compelled by our system of religous toleration to offer them an asylum.' John Adams, 2nd President of the U.S.A
The members of Yes don't often speak well of this album. I've heard Chris Squire say it was rushed and not their best. But I've always felt this was one of their tightest studio albums, just before they went to the "new" sound of 90125.
@Roostalee That's surprising that Squire would say that. I would have thought that he would say that this was Yes' most under-rated album. I agree that this is a very tight album and it sounds like they put a lot of work into rehearsing, arranging and recording these tracks. In addition, the album is very cohesive.
A huge point Steve Howe made about this album was the fact that they allowed him complete freedom to play whatever he wanted on the Drama album. I bought the cd two weeks ago and haven't stopped listening to it! I love hearing Steve playing his Les Paul guitars as they have a very very different dynamic and tone to his old ES175. Far more drive in the sound.
This is one of the best albums of Yes .. and this is a very good .. despite not Jon Anderson sing this very well produced by Trevor Horn, who also writes and sings is awesome ... amazing .....
@RICK3040 Sorry, but Topographic Oceans is the greatest Yes album of all time. I feel it defined their greatness in all facets of their music. Still in love with this band!
This is one of the best albums of Yes .. and this is a very good .. despite not Jon Anderson sing this very well produced by Trevor Horn, who also writes and sings is awesome ... amazing ....
This is one of Yes' most stacked albums. Great selection of tunes. This one is my favourite because I like Steve's playing on this tune-- it's catchy!
I bought this album years ago thinking Jon was going to be singing. At first I was very upset that he was not singing but as I listened to this album I fell in love with it! Many great songs!
I was in the army in 80 when this came out and jammed this CD a lot at Fort lenardwood MO on my big Boom box I had bought! It's funny how other guys couldn't quite grasp how good this music is! Yes is such a great band! I really started to appreciate them after this came out. I am also a Kansas and Rush fan so you all know what I am talking about!
@bassdoggy1 ... I fought every fan of Yes when this great LP came out. They said it wasn't Yes anymore... what a bunch of idiots. I´m also a big fan of Rush since their first album, is amazing what these three guys can do!!
@fresherstraighter .....Cool Freshstraighter way to stand your ground! After this LP I started to really listen to Yes and caught up on their older stuff and I have to be honest, I love this whole album the best it is actually is my favorite. I think the music is really cool and the lead vocalist is great. The Bass simply kicks! I mean Come on! I am a Camera! and machine Messia hehehehe It's awsome! I played the Sh@# out of it!
about the album cover (and all Yes covers): It was painted by Roger Dean. If you watch the movie "Avatar", you'll see how they blatantly animated his paintings (although I don't think they gave him any credit).
Steve Howe carried Yes on Drama. He was finally allowed to bring all of his talents to the forefront. Trevor Horn played some impressive bass on this song, too.
@MrDuojet -- actually, when I think of Drama, I think that Squire and White carried Yes the most as the bass and drum lines really stand out. Mr. Howe certainly put in a good effort too. Overall, this is one of Yes' stronger albums -- though underrated -- despite the absences of Mr. Anderson and Mr. Wakeman.
@MrDuojet A cover is always necessary. In concealment lies a great part of our strength. Hence we must always hide ourselves under the name of another society. --Die neusten ararbeiten des Spartacus and Philo in dem Illuminaten-Orden, 1794, p: 165
