Pretty sad ending, i really liked Sabre. I didn't feel too depressed because i knew that this would happen in the end, as much as i wanted to see Shirou and Sabre together it would go against their characters ideals. Although this is no where near as bad as the incredibly depressing ending of Chrno Trigger, that ending just straight up pissed me off.

She became a Heroic Spirit before she died, so when she decided not to participate in the Holy Grail War anymore (knowing that it's not going to grant her wish), she went back to her present time... where she dies. :'(

And by the way there's an additional scene were shirou and saber lived happilly ever after.. (It is found on the visual novel).
Well some anime endings are also sad for example like of tsukihime, and it's original anime maker team was also type-moon(the same goes for FSN) try watching that anime for sometime. Yes we all do want a happy ending, but again depends on the anime plot..
@LinksRoyal I hate it when writers do this. They create a romantic arc. Have us get attached to the characters. And then they rip our hearts out and make us regret that we even watched the series to begin with. It's just cruel.

she said no matter how many times she fails she will seek again the holy grail (much if you have the visual novel) but in the 5th holy grail war she finally understand the TRUE holy grail remember the false priest said "The holy grail is nothing but a curse vessel that could eliminate everyone but it's possessor" so knowing the outcome of the HG she finally understand about why did Emiya Kiritsugu destroyed it.
As you all wonder why saber ends up dead in the final episode, well i could answer that but not all the details, first of all shirou didn't want saber to disappear and tell her that she could live in a 2nd life by drinking the waters of the holy grail, but saber didn't accept that because of the king's duty she believed and no interest on living a second life. and the second one is she said that she couldn't be in spirit form due to shirous lack of magical energy...
She dies because the hero must be dead in order to be a heroic spirit and then being able to be summoned in the Holy Grail Wars correctly..
Saber couldn't be in spirit form not because of Shirou's lacking skills, but only because she wasn't an heroic spirit yet (Need to be an heroic spirit if you want to turn into spirit form, that's just normal =) )
She promised to obtain the Holy Grail in exchange of being an Heroic Spirit so when there was an opportunity of obtaining the Grail(Holy Grail War
I'm a big fan of this series and played through the game - and whilst they did a great job on the anime.. I just don't like the ending, though they stick to the game. I mean it's always the same - those who love each other can't be together and we get a bitter sweet ending. Always the same in this kind of anime. What really disappointed me is, that they didn't do a really good ending for Saber in the game. In the PS2 version they added a bit to compensate - but still I'm not happy with this..
why would this be a good ending. cant live with that they say that they love each other and she dies for no real reason and to watch what she says and her corpse hurt my soul..

I'm a Saber fan, but to me, this ending is the best out of all three of them.
It's just that at the end, Saber accepted her fate and didn't want to redo it, that enough made me satisfied.
