Don't we all have freedom of speech? Why these women were banned from country radio is beyond me. I love their music and their opinions wouldn't change that. I agree with another poster. Hank Williams gets praised for blasting Obama, yet these girls get slammed. It's an ugly double standard.
I think Natalie and the Dixie Chicks are Hero's. Its no surprise the whole world knows what a criminal George Bush is. Finally hopefully people will realize Natalie stated her opinion and after all this time, it's one that MOST Americans share now.
"As of 2009, they have won 13 Grammy Awards, with 5 of them earned in 2007 including the coveted Grammy Award for Album of the Year for Taking the Long Way. As of July 2010, with 30.5 million certified albums,[3] and sales of 26,733,000 albums in the U.S., they have become the top selling all-female band in the U.S. during the Nielsen SoundScan era.[4]"
Just look at what they have acheived...5 Grammy nominations in 2007 for this album...and 5 wins. These ladies are AMAZING!!!!
She only told the truth about Bush. But she kbnows how bad americans like to attack, Be lucky Bush didn't bomb your show with everyone else in the venue. You gals rock. Just TRY and keep yolur comments, especiallt political ones not public. I know it sucks and freedom of speech. That don't exist. Its a koke. Love you gals. Great voices and song lyrics.
150 People who saw this song for what it was, a great stab back at 'establishment' liked and 1 dislike from Geroge W. Bush under the pseudonym CokePrez01
funny how the entire world knew how Bush was full of crap and how he lied about Iraq being responsable for 9/11 and Hussein having WMD's...sadly in the us there is still a segment of the population who still thinks he was right, its scary when you think about it
@MsSparklesNGlitter Even scarier that you could show up years after the many things these girls did to get themselves tossed by the C&W genre, and think there is some ethereal connection between this, the most hatefully sold song ever produced, and the misdeeds of a president. GW was a scoundrel, no doubt. This didn't make the "last straw" from this pandering group any more than it really was. Who says it wasn't a genuine sentiment expressed in 2003? Natalie Maines herself.
@haysnoe LOL. Add up what they earned over 15 years, subtract the loss on their last tour, the cost of childcare and all expenses on that trip as well as paying tribute to Sony and over a dozen professional lyricists and songwriters who actually wrote all their last album (including this song), and each ended up with a decent income....... that ended over four years ago for all intents and purposes. Why else would they be trying to crawl back now. Rich? hardly.
@stephenmcdougald85 YES! Freedom of SPEECH for EVERYBODY! That includes the millions of ex-fans who voiced their opinion to their radio stations and slammed their wallets shut. Keep Hatin' if you want. It is a FREE COUNTRY. BASH these silly bitches all you want. It is your RIGHT TO BASH THEM IF YOU WANT.
The reaction of country fans to Natalie's comment is such a reflection of the bastardization of the church, the leading body of people who hand down hate from generation to generation. Christian's aren't even allowed to love one another if their dogma regarding worshiping Christ doesn't match. They must be considered "going to hell" and shunned. When Bush took office we had a surplus of money. When he left he had destroyed it all, with the blessing of the hate-filled right. How very sad.
its a shame that in a country that professes a citizens right to protest its governments actions and express that concern using their right to free speech( which is one of the cornerstones of our american constitution), the power of the media (controlled by conglamorates tied to the industrial military complex owned by a bunch of old men who managed to keep their sons and daughters out of harms way) tried to silence and discredit a supremely talented and gifted group of patriots who spoke truth
I respect the Dixie Chicks, one of the only bands to voice their opinions in this decade. Instead we have people like Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber who are only interested in making money... It shames me to be American when people get criticized for speaking their mind. Lets just be friends dammit
Im very sad and fearfull when i see the comments here... All the anger, all the hatred... Are'nt we playing the 'game' the governements ( ALL of them no matter where from) are trying to make us play = be judgemental, hatefull, angry at each other, trying to get OUR point across NO MATTER THE COST ???? Can't we just agree that wars are awfull and that there is MUCH and MANY other way to deal and handle things ??? I STILL believe in a world where we can TALK things out and UNDERSTAND each other
These girls are DAMN good...and Nat had the right to say what was on her mind. Bush was a stinking, bigoted dumbass and I am soooooo glad he is gone. Damn politicians try to control all of us and preach to us about what is right and wrong, while they cheat on their wives and take bribes, etc etc... Remember Ross Perot? They ran him out because he was going to put them all out on their asses if he got elected. Talk about devious crap!
I was a major fan of theirs which is hard cause back then I was not a fan of country music. We lived in a world back then when you were either hard core for the war or against it. They had a right to express their feelings about their thoughts on the war. Doesn't matter where she said it, she had the right. I might not agree or go completely 100 percent on her side, but no one in their life should ever have death threats and feel threatened for what they say. My heart goes out to her.
Natalie Maines immediately apologized for her comment in 2003. She spent the next several months while stateside calling it a JOKE. That wasn't her rhetoric while in Europe however. This disingenuous pandering on a subject that millions of americans were having to take deadly serious was why they were eventually tossed by their entire original fan base. Anyone who thought they might give her a chance got that dispelled after their 3 year bile spewing public temper tantrum. Gone for good reasons.
@Therealmensa Initially Natalie tried to explain her remark as a joke, but only to diffuse the situation to avoid backlash by redneck thugs and the even scarier Republican politicians & their controlled network. However, subsequently, when forced into a corner to take a serious stance on her original statement, she more than clarified it as Bush is a "dumb *uck!" You can't get any more clearer than that. Again, there is a bit of humor in her delivery, but the message is loud, clear, & truthful.
@luvindiemusic Cite your source for her being forced into a corner. Just exactly when did that happen? And her "clarification"? In her movie, I suppose? Watch the movie and you'll NOT hear GW's last sentence "Freedom of speech is a two way street". That would have reduced her "Dumb *uck" comment to what it really was; a vapid bitter response to being told the truth, not the humor you describe.
@Therealmensa She never apologized for what she said. She apologized, as do everyone who say things controversial, if she offended anyone. She NEVER said it was a joke. She should have said she was embarrassed that Barbara Bush didn't abort him. Bush sucks, so did his father and so did his brother, who I had the displeasure of living in Florida the entire time he was governor. Anyone bothered by what she said needs to get a life. It was her opinion, just like it's yours to hate her.
@kmel5150 Watch her own movie, you'll hear her call it a JOKE. Fact with a reference. I hated the Bush family most likely before you were born. That doesn't make her pandering disingenuous comment any less vile. It is one thing to hold a conviction. Quite another to pander for profit. Millions recognized her comment was belittling to them, then for her to call it a joke got them tossed by millions. Anyone still hanging with them let go when she started more bashing. She's gone for good reasons.
@Therealmensa Like I said, they can retire right now and live off the royalties of the album this came from. Whether she said she was joking around or not, SHE MEANT IT. And I saw Shut Up and Sing, too. And the first thing she said when she took the stage on the first show of their tour in South Carolina was " And I'm still embarrassed that George Bush comes from Texas ". There was nothing vile about what she said, she stated her opinion, just like Toby Keith and Ted Nugent are praised for.
@kmel5150 You cannot spin a statement she IMMEDIATELY called an insincere sentiment into anything now, so don't try. You also seem to think they are selling albums and making royalties. Not happening. Every one of you latecomers have already bought the albums they were going to . Sales are next to nothing for them now. You specifically argue AGAINST Maines' OWN description of her comment. Doesn't matter what she changed it to so you would buy their last album, it was insincere. She's still gone.
You people drive me crazy. She did what she thought she was right, just like President Bush did. I LOVE President Bush and in my opinion he did the right thing but I also have to give it to Natalie for sticking up for what she thinks is right. MILLIONS of people think the same thing they just arent in the public eye. We all have a right to our own opinion that is what makes this country great. THIS SONT IS AWESOME with no disrespect to Pres Bush.

I remember staying up until 3 in the morning just to watch this on the top 20 countdown when it came out. And I figured I had a 6th sense because everytime I turned the channel to VH1 it was right there or it was coming up next. 5 grammys and they are still kicking. :D
Do you know where they performed this??? Ditto on the crying part - of all the "girl groups" I've seen they have the most powerful lyrics and melodies - like say Travelin Soldier, Easy Sillence, That One and TOP OF THE WORLD!!!
