Wikipeda reports that there was a mistake on the maps and the reef was shown much deeper than it really is. Looks like this may not have been the crews fault and every cruise ship that has entered this harbour may have been at risk.

on 1994, 28. 09 was a stormy night on Baltic sea, big waves and all. A ferry called Estonia went to Stockholm from Tallinn, she sank on 01:30 am. Just like that ship in this video, she fell on her side and sank in 30 minutes. Except there were no one around who would have rescued the people. 852 people died and 137 survived. Survivors had to float on a rescue boat for 7 hours...Only 94 bodies were found in the sea and brought back to their loved ones.Not all ship accidents have happy ending :(

I was on that ship--top deck when it hit the reef. I thought at first they dropped anchor, but then it started listing to one side. Took them four hours to get us all off the ship; the crew had no idea what the hell they were doing. Then, once we were all off, the tugboat took the ship in the wrong direction--instead of beaching it, they took it out to deeper waters so it would sink. I'm convinced they let it sink deliberately to collect the insurance money. Douchebags.

I have been to Santorini. There is a platou where you lay down the anchor. If the vessel starts dragging the anchor will fall of the platou and start drifting.

Probably hit an underwater reef afterwards. It is very tricky beeing at anchor at Santorini.
