I love the your book, and your tutorials are outstanding. I also love that whenever I come across a need, chances are excellent you have made a video for it!! A mega thank you!
it is a sprial but that is what some people call it but us old sea dogs call it half hitching if you would like to see tie some knots go to my you tube site OH-KA-NOI bone carving and more i do more than just carve bone i also carve wood and paint and a bunch of other junk since i am retired found lots of time on my hands now to put that knowlege that i picked up over the years to some good use. on my second video is the knot tying hope it will help you
yes this i know i guess that is one reason the French bowline is actually a Portuguese bowline, and a square knot is also known as a reef knot and a two lovers knot is also a true lovers knot yes i agree on this with you but some knots have had one name for 2or 3 hundred years or more then someone up and changes it now thats what i am talking about. thanks for the heads up and i hope that i clarified a few things, cause you did clear up a few questions that i had thanks again
@RichardOhKaNoi Ah, now I see what you mean. But I degrees, I'm not sure what type of half hitch knot you speak, but this is no type of half hitch I know. The only two name I know this knot by is the Clover Hitch, and the Spiral Hitch.
-then your a closed mined idiot like a lot of people who have no curtsey's what so ever calling a complete stranger names is not cool please dont insult people what is the matter with you i am a 65 year old great grandfather show some respect for the retired navy man who fought in three wars. ok and like i said there is only one proper name for anything you are either right or wrong no inbetweens
@RichardOhKaNoi Actually, sir, many knots have more than one name, just as many animals do, for example the Camel Spider, also known as a Sun Spider, which are in fact the same spider. The reason for this is because back when the knot was new not everyone knew the proper name for it, so they started referring to it by another name, which then caught on. A clover hitch, when repeated, is then sometimes called a spiral hitch. Although a half hitch is much different than this knot.
richard (DICK) some might say your proper name is (OLD SALT) but i think OLD FART suits you better.TIAT name for this knot is right. o-yea i dont care where you have been or what you have done.
no i will stick with what i said the proper name or term is always used, other made up names should not be used you are eather correct or incorrect and it is not bad manners to tell the truth. yes we used half hitches on dogging wrenches and a few spars or on some surfaces. it looks good and very nautical. in addition with a few turksheads and fox and geese a real fancy man can do a lot, and the name fancy man is not derogitory it is a person who does fancywork.
nice video, thanks for sending the link tronclay, also nambla.org: tronclay thanks for those pics and your donation to nambla.org keep up the fight we won’t be pushed around by these pigs anymore- its appreciated our love is our right.

as a sailor who has spent 48 years sailing the oceans and tying knots every day making fancy work and ornamental pieces using various lines, i always tried to use the proper names for my hitches as found in ashleys book of knots or in the enycilopedia of knots. the true name is not a sprial hitch because that hitch does not exist. it is called a half hitch. if you are going to teach something then learn the proper names for things
Search the web for "Spiral Hitching" or "French Spiral Hitching", see the multitude of books reviewing, discussing the origins of, and dating the tie. Also its a series of clove hitches, not half hitches. And its not a "hitch" (a noun), its "hitching" (a verb).

@TyingItAllTogether what part of being a real deep water sailor and a bosn oops sorry thats boatswain to land lubbers of 48 years dont you under stand i have blead more salt water than most have ever sailed on. i started sailing in 1963 and i have just retired. knots do i know them. the answer is yes. i have made knots for some very famous people like mr and mrs macintosh (the owner of apple computor for there boat the Lizeron and i won 2nd place in the navy west coast deck olympics.
I checked out your videos. Not only do I think what you do is really impressive, I more so love that you're sharing it with others. As you mentioned in your "Bone Carvings and more by Oh-ka-noi" video some ties (same ties) go by different names. Best to you and your work.
@TyingItAllTogether thank you for your kind words , yesterday i was teaching some young people how to do fancy work and had a good time doing it. it is a shame that some people will not pass on to others things that they have learned . i have been passing on my skills to many others who are willing to learn. all i ask is that they share there skills later on. so that future generations can also have the knollage and skills to make various things. thanks again
the cool thing is i found out how to make this on my own a while back! i thought i found this cool knew way to tie string and make sword handles, but now i find out that it's actually a pretty well known not............................bugguh.
I did this but had two spiral hitches going the same way. Also used the spiral hitch to make a whip. All it takes is a little imagination, and viola you got a whip, crop, or cat o'nine...
If you want to know why he is going over the staff instead of looping and pulling the rest of the rope through.... thats a lot of rope and pulling it all the way through is much more time consuming that what he did.
@Skytroop Depends on what railing you're talking about. It's used on railings on US Navy ships all the time, from dog handles on hatches to hand rails on some of the the ladders. I guess for railings for paratroopers, it's not very practical.
@pcelf Allow me to clarify. It is not practical to loop the cord and pass it over the end of a railing when you have no end to pass it over. This half hitch can be done on such railings but not in this way. I have done this on numerous ladderways on the USS LCI(L)-713.
I have yet to see a paratrooper use a railing in exiting an aircraft in flight. no not a practical idea and that is not what I was referring to.
I've heard this is called a French whip, but then I heard it years ago so I may be wrong.

Same question asked here. Another clove hitch to tie it all together? Either way... 'Time to get my hands dirty'.
awarenessis 9 months ago
@awarenessis - You could end it as shown, with another clove hitch, or with a constrictor knot.
TyingItAllTogether 9 months ago
Is there a special way to end it or do i just use another clove hitch?

Also, you can change the direction and make it look like a "V" part way down. Just twist the cord the other direction.
