  • I want this video on my 526 phone.

  • Jason: This is a really helpfull video, as are all the video's you post...The way you communicate is very stright forward + easy to understand...Thankyou for being so open + honest, its much appreciated...Hope you are happy + healthy...Good vibes comin' at ya from the UK :-)

  • Thanks for all the theory - and the great playing. it's practical and inspiring. I'm going to find your scales videos - thank you again!

  • Another great job! Thanks for giving away so much ... a lot of it is now coming together for me since discovering you on YT a few months back. You are a really excellent teacher.

Can you recall which of your vids it is where you break up the scales and permute the internal components? You mentioned in that vid about keeping a notebook with all the variations.

    Cheers, Mark

  • Hey I think its the in all the ones having anything to do with scales or scale exercises...

  • Good to hear from you J. Been a while.

  • Found it thanks! It's your vid #36 ... so much work to do ...

  • Why do you shave your armpits? Armpit hair catches sweat and prevents it from running down your under arms, I think you should let it grow out

  • It's a key thing to become such badass harp player ;)

  • Good Lesson. Thanks.

  • im frustrated i cant get the same sound of the scale on my harmonica that i hear in the video

  • You are not done with the devil you are the devil no one plays that good who isn't the devil himself or an angel

  • the proper improvisation out of it

thanks for your work and inspiration

    markus from latvia

  • wow im discusssing with thegreat jason ricci abot scales

d minor scale is derived from the F major scale its the sixth mode of it and this is caled aeolin mode if i remember correctly

the dorian mode we discuss here is derived from the c major scale and is the second mode

i believe they are called diatonic modes

melodic minor and harmonic don"t belong in there i think

now i got one more question about playing

i dont have any problems playing the mode over two octaves up and down but i dont get

  • hey the dorian scale is not d minor

  • Hey...It can be as well as many other scales can also be in d-minor...

  • am I missing something, seriously?

    Thanks

    J

  • as you said the dorian scale is DEFGABCD

    the d-minor scale is DEFGABbCD

but not much of a difference

    real inspiring playing man

you make the harmonica a real instrument

  • Right! but arn't there many minor scales...? Melodic Minor, Harmonic minor DORIAN minor etc....Dosen't that still make the doriand minor "A" D minor scale? I know and use the scale you tabbed out above but I wasn't aware that it was reffered to as simply the D minor scale or those intervals period as being the "minor scale"? Know what I mean? i thought every minor scale had it's own name? I'm fucked up I guess..

  • No, I believe you're right.

DEFGABCD is the dorian D minor

DEFGABbCD is called the "natural" D minor

  • Shouldn't we talk about a flat 3rd and flat 7th as the character of the dorian? Help me I'm not sure.

  • great great stuff

  • This is a great lesson and its got me exploring 4th position (aeolian mode in A on a C harp) and 5th position (phrygian mode in the key of E on a C harp.) Thanks.

  • Hi Jason, can u tell me the name of the minor tune u mentioned? thanx

  • Allen George Smith rocks. The man whose middle name was Harmonica. He was a musical innovator on harp who took 3rd position to a new level on both Diatonic and Chromatic. I like that you mentioned listening to him in the start of this video.

  • Thank you Thank you. Especially for the talk about scales and developing independence and "your own voice" through them. I will be a good girl and practice my lips off!

  • Great odd lead in...'just hangin out', hehehe! Love it. More great tips and pointers...thanks man.

  • Great lesson on scales in third. Thanx for the tips!

  • Thanks again MR. P and keep coming back!

    J

  • Hey Jason

Fantastic lesson, sir! I've got a steep hill to climb, musically. Thanks for the inspiration to strive for the top. Comin' at ya from across the pond!

  • Thanks B1

  • Thanks jason,Where can I get the shirt?.. Mike..

  • It was custom made for me by A friend of Pat's up in Maine...but you can have one made for cheap on cafepressdotcom

  • Great job Jason. Really learned a lot, you are right about that one note being so intense, I remember hearing that same thing in a Supertramp song and I was like, WOAH! It had all of this reverb and it was just haunting. By the way, what is your Bending style? Kind of pursing the lips, or pulling your Tongue Back?

  • That Violin Concerto is all over Youtube...search Sibelius Violin Concerto op 47 1st movement! Jascha Heifeiz has the best one also Oistrakah...

  • Thanks Jay! This was one of my faves to make...

    J

  • Yer killin' me. You make this look so easy! HA!

Thanks for these posts!! They're great inspiration and very informative.

  • Thank you sir!

  • Great pointers on playing the draw 3 in minor. Thanks Jason.
