I tried walking back and forth like that with my dog. The problem is, everything is a fun game for him. Such fun, if i go forward we'll turn around yay x.x We did that for 1 hour out in the cold, then returned back inside frozen without any reduction in the pulling. It might work for lazy dogs though, many people seem to recommend this technique.
in sweden we have a very good dogcoach, called Fredrik Steen, and his methods are much much better than this. He thinks that different collars and stuff that you use to make the dog not to pull, is unneccesary. its much better to have control of the dog!
You know that the dog only stopped pulling because a pinch collar fu*king hurts? He won't respect you more, he still isn't focused on you. Really I'm so tired of this Cesar Millan shit!!! Just struggle your dog uand it will stop pulling or being aggressive? How stupid must an owner be to treat a dog like that...Please, people just inform yourself about dogbehaviour before you get a dog -_____-
WORKS! Remember While training - you are NOT "walking" the dog...YET...you are training "PAY ATTENTION 2 ME"!!! The "trick" is 1-getting your dog to FOCUS on you! 2- When he feels the tug, he is to LOOK @ U and come to you. Click (or "YES!") & Treat when he looks or returns to you. Repeat, Repeat. Repeat. Start walking, when he looks @ U, click treat! click treat. Repeat. Repeat Repeat. He will learn within 10 minutes what behavior you WANT. The next day DO THE SAME THING. SLOW DOWN, REPEAT!
Why do these people show us the "how to vids" with dogs that are ALREADY TRAINED??? Why don't they show us these nifty tricks with an "UNTRAINED" dog. These people create these "how to" vids under perfect condition (no trees, no fire hydrants, no sqirrels, cars, noise or other pets). Please show us how to teach a dog how to walk on a leash with an untrained dog that pulls?
This video is using a dog that doesn't even pull from the get go and seems to have the full focus on the owner and doesn't even show what collar is being used. How about adding that dog that is barking in the background to walk past the dog, or a cat running by, or how about walking that dog for a real walk in the woods or something with deer running by vs. walking 1/2 a block back and forth.
@meriam2 You don't know what you're looking at, apparently. The dog is highly responsive to the collar. Just as we're walking him by the truck, he pulls against the pinch collar. He does this once or twice, and that's all it took. It's subtle, but this whole idea that you need to jerk and yank for most dogs is a misnomer. The rest is just getting him conditioned to walk alongside her. This woman wouldn't have paid $300 if the dog HAD ALREADY walked on the leash, this well.
So, frequent about-turns seem to be the way to go, but, really, I'd like to see footage of how a lunging, hard-pulling dog is brought to understand the idea over time - a 1/2 hr. lesson w/ about turns every 20 ft starts to bring the concept across on that particular day, but how many weeks does it take to have it fully integrated into on-leash behavior - with strong distractions around? I'm not looking for a concrete answer, there isn't one for all dogs, but... a month? 6 months? A year?
@0bovine Hi, Bovine: I have some pretty serious "pullers" on our dvd, "How To Teach Any Dog To Walk On A Loose Leash, In Less Than 10 Minutes"... get it at Amazon.com, or you can watch almost instantly if you have access to Dogproblems. That said, I'll do more videos in the future with strong "pullers". The answer to your question is, depending on the dog: almost instantly" -- to a couple of practice sessions, if you're using the right training collar for your dog. Not weeks or months.
I'm sorry, but this dog doesn't look like a puller. It looks like the lady had to pull it to get her dog to walk. If you are ever in my neighborhood, please come and see me and I'll show you 2 dogs that are real pullers. I'll bet this won't work with them.
@Katz5054 I can guarantee that I can get your dogs to stop pulling on the leash, and I'm willing to wager any amount of money on it. Where do you live?

What did this teach us??
NOTHING. This dog is not a puller. Get a dog thats pulls like a steam train. Then teach it not to..
This was a waste of 2 min of my life I wont get back..... I didnt bother watching the whole thing.
