Once its Great to give Away the Money Money sucks, but there are to Mans good you can make with 1000000 think about Little junges Children you can live they a Chance to stay and grow up so i think it was a Way Harry
why is everyone so annoyed about them burning it and not giving it to charity or something????? Its their money, they can do what they want wtih it.. What about some rich people who buy fast cars and swimming pools? Is that not a waste of money where it could have gone to somewhere better like starving kids in africa??
@DarkDragonAdal It was just paper. So, it is not that big of a deal. Well, it is not like you would donate all of your savings to charity, right. I wouldn't at least. Better give a poor man living on the streets a place to spend a night.
@DarkDragonAdal "Should" they? Nobody tells the KLF what to do of their time or money, I'll tell you that. They go beyond ordinary people's fears and taboos. It must have been kind of funny to watch all these motherfucking hypocrites gasp "ohmygod! it is MONEY! they could give it to someone in NEED!", I'm almost sure that most of these people would never give to charity or whatsoever, if they have the same amount of money. They'll buy boats and dresses. So fuck that, burn it all, and viva KLF!
Idiots. It may be shit, but unfortunately money is valuable. How many starving children could have been fed on those funds? I don't see how having to 'give away' money means youre not in control of it. No ones forced to do anything with money. The act of burning it may be art but it's a self-absorbed pile of wank. All to give each other a pat on the back and to 'set themselves free' from the awful chains of living their terrible comfortable existence in a developed country.
@trobuff Why do you think there are starving children? Because of the capitalist system. The world has sufficient resources to feed everybody but because of the way society is organised, millions of people live in poverty.
Yes it's an artistic statement but what else can an artist do?
@DaveUndertaker I understand that the point of it could be to undermine the capitalist system, and the fact that the monetary system is the overriding cause of poverty is true. I'm all for highlighting that. But unfortunately the capitalist system is what we are living in, and while we operate in it I think we should try to use it to our benefit or that of others, as best we can anyway. I just find that burning the money as an artistic statement is uninspired and utterly useless.
@trobuff going on about starving children fuck you / they should have burnt the whole uk currency its people like you that winge about stuff you no fuck all about
It's very easy to think why these guys couldn't have just given this money to the needy, especially in our very material world. But this video is demonstrating what Jimmy said (the guy with the curly hair who looked like he just got outta bed!). Money shouldn't control us, it's a human weakness. It also characterises partly what the KLF were about.. however they needed to publicise themselves and this (amongst other odd balls) was unique and certainly caught everyones attention. Quite clever I
i just love that they randomally have an orange "K" army Truck drive past, its hilarious, they really created a KLF world during the height of their success.
In 1995, I burned ALL my money . But I only had £200. So I dont get all this adulation and hero-worship from ass-kissing fans .... I guess I was just not rich enough !
What the fuck did these guys smoke before doing this? I mean why couldn't they give it to somebody that actually needs it. Anarchy is a shitty thing " money doesn't control us, we control the money , let's burn it". Come the fuck on these guys suck.
i love the KLF but they have obviously sat up too late smoking dope discussing what money does to the world and decided to burn it. But guess what guys you still need it the day after cause how you gonna buy food or your dope...... yes idiots
Well, guess all their money didnt sum up to exactly 1mil. £ so they probably stil hav had money and dope for their needs since then, but now their historical to.
It was no hoax btw, & lets face it If they didnt do it someone else would have. & as for 'giving to charity' etc, I would like to think that it did a little more than just cause sensationalism, it was a great statement & someone had to do it. How many of you would have the balls to burn mill?
@LUKUS909 On your KLF money burning comment: How are you weak minded if you don't hate money? I don't. Money never did anything bad, people who couldn't deal with money did.
Also, what makes these guys heroes for burning a million? How about giving it to needy children?
Fact remains kids: burning well earned money is a dumb thing to do, whether you're an artist or not. Personally I would've kept everything myself, but they could easilly support starting musicians, or give to people in need.. It's almost insulting to other artists/musicians. It's just stupid. If you can't see that, then you are in fact narrow minded.
I was lucky enough to go to the KLF's weekend in Jura, and those boys DID NOT CARE. They spent money like water, because THEY COULD. So I think it was real. But who knows? They were scam-merchants from day one - so.....But I'll never forget mermaid girls walking out of the sea to the sound of "What Time Is Love" at 2000 watts. Now that, that was art.
In a way I admire them, but what would a starving person in Africa think of this? I would have admired them much more if they would have donated it to people who need it.
They did burn it. But... How did they take it away from us? I wont say Us actually, I'll say you, because I don't relate to this group you refer too. How did the KLF burning money in '92 directly remove money from yourself?
He he he . I worked for a Crawley based security company snappily named "Ratedale Security" in the 90's and was working on the armoured van that went to a Natwest bullion centre in Kent to pick the money up ! In fact , I packed those bundles of £50's into the large blue company cash bags . I was also at the depot when the lads came to pick it all up - in some shitty old Range Rover . Happy days. :o)
I wonder if most of the people who are moaning about this searched for "the klf" or searched for "burning money" and now their curiosity has been satisfied, they don't like it. I will probably waste more than a million pounds on pointless shit that i don't need before I'm dead. They just did it in one hit. Buy, copy or download The KLF - Chill Out album, it's amazing :)
In any case, Drummond used to say that he realized the potential disaster burning the money could pose should his son e'er get sick. So they knew going in it was something one may consider and reconsider... but they did it anyway. "Please accept the contradictions inherent within." Or something.
I love that people are still talking about this so many years later... well, I guess it wasn't too long... but... er, what? Oh yeah, and I love COMPACTASS1's comment, too... it's awesome. Just the sort of thing Cauty & Drummond used to write into their own tracks (See Voice of the Beehive's "Were those guys for real? I mean what's with all this JAMs shit?") and I wouldn't be surprised if he was planted by one of them. ;-)
FUCK MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!! The very symbolism of the primitive society that deliberately break away our natural sense of unity. We grow out of it, or I say let the humanity be doomed! Why the hell do we need money to assist each other in life? Why need money to have enough to eat? If we DO evolve spiritually as a whole and unify in order to survive, money must come to an end, period. Let wisdom and love guide us, not materialistic greeds or superficial governmental rules!
Dumb Fucks. They think they are being rebels but are just demonstrating being dumb and lacking in imagination.
How sad when they sweep all the remains into a bag and try to get it valued. You can tell they regret it even in this video, i bet they totally regret it now. Im sure all their friends do when they are drunk and talk about it like anyone gives a shit (yeah shut the fuck up moron, we know you burned a load of money' pffft what a bunch of dumbarses)
Any of u fkin morons who are all like "OOOO OOO OOO Thier burning money!!! " or "Its not real money" or even "give it to me" etc.......U PRICKS---HOW BADLY DID U MISS THE POINT??? They earned it.....fuck the established money ethos.....Keep control.....and fuck it all off...sheer brilliance.
Bill and Jimmy are nothing but heroes.
And u pussy MF'S will realize this when there gone.
I LOVE MONEY. with out it, WHAT DO U DO? lets be REAL, MONEY.....buys u LIFE. and more abundently! if u dont like money, want to burn it, ect, SEND SOME MY WAY. money pays for meds, food, bills( eltric, water)dr office, clothes, and then u have the finner things in life, a soft bed, beter quality of food, able to go on vacation, feel free to do more, thus live more. people say money cant make u happpy, well if it dont, send it to me, ill make it make me happpy
it was real money ...they made a LOT more after doing that....they became a massive act around the world, kicked off scenes of acid house and generally made some pretty good music,....then the charts got a hold on em.but ye, think about it ...burning a million then was a massive amount comapred to today ...it was basically an advertising budget for a band, theychise to burn it and made many times its sum after ...proably the best marketing ploy/staement of the 90's .
About them being a cult band in the US, in the early 90s they had several hits on the radio. There was a time where 3AM was on frequent rotation on top 40 radio and MTV.
I don't think very many people would have understood the irony at the time.
I can appreciate the concept of burning money for making a statement about having it. However when you start to think of it in terms of, for example, that money going to help children with medical problems, then burning £1m rapidly becomes utterly sick.
Apparently they regret burning the money now. Although it's such a great idea and such a fascinating part of modern music history I just think what that money could have done for people who really needed it.
All that aside, frickin' incredible band. Chill Out and The White Room are just amazing. Just wish they hadn't deleted their back catalogue, it's so hard to find their records.
One of the most pioneering & influential bands EVER. I love the fact that they never really reached more than a cult status where I am (western USA). The legend of the KLF is best this way because this makes you want to appreciate them and what they did more. If you know nothing of the KLF and say you are a DJ or love "underground" music, then you are nothing more than a poser. This band will be remembered and carved in history. Burn the beat!
If you're wondering what 'penkiln-burn' refers to it's the river that flows into the Cree at Newon Stewart, Bill Drummond's childhood home in Dumfries and Galloway. He possibly went to the same school as me yet no-one even seems to have heard of him in Newton Stewart!
6 months after the klf burned 1,000,000 of their own money the national lottery was launched in Britain.
I remember the fever and the excitement that gripped the nation. Everyone fixated on the 6 lucky numbers and the possibility of salvation. With a million pounds EVERYTHING would be alright, all your problems would vanish, life would be eternal bliss, "it could be you" The KLF burned the material dream and challenged all of us to WAKE UP...........
@slowikor No... that's awsome, sad is using that fire power to declare war on random countries for pathetic reasons... it'd be like if these idiots burned their money to power a firepowered train carrying and spreading horseshit and then thought it was some sort of messianic cause
Don't be a complete twat. You're now just lying because you know you're wrong. Show me one shred of evidence that it was fake. One link or quote, or news article, or book that states it was fake money and I might be convinced. Otherwise you are full of shit.
You complete muppet. You can't show any evidence, because there isn't any. You just made up that crap about the 'cameramen' admitting it was fake. Read anything about the KLF and it will tell you it was real. That was the whole point of the artistic piece you fool. Just do some research. I'm done with you, because you are clearly a lying twat.
I loved these guys and their work i still do! Jim is a great artist. I read about it back in 90's, i agree with their art but they could help out some ppl with that money instead of burning it could serve the anarchist purpose aswell if all the money was distributed into homeless or disabled people.
If they did not want to be ruled by money, why did they sign money generating contracts to begin with?? Why did they not stay real artists and produce and handle their own music, their own way with out music contracts?? Do they want to be known for burning the money or for their music? It was their money, so they could do what ever they wanted to do with it. So they did, Point!
yea. they left a dead sheep on the managers front door after he cancelled their contract for an unauthorized stunt. had a note saying "I died for ewe - bon appetit"
all of its on wiki and probably other places if you dont believe that site.
The US Govt throw US$700 billion at banks who destoy people's lives and no-one bats an eyelid, the K Foundation burn 1 million quid 15 years ago and everyone chucks a massive tantrum... Ah Drummond, Cauty, what strange times we live in... the K Foundation is dead, long live the K Foundation!
KLF live in the ethos of every person who shares music of any type. Just as the Justified Ancients transcended music, we transcend the logical future of the music business itself. We are the future the fuckers in suits deny and terrorize. We are the bringing down of the old regime of old boys and moneymakers. We are the coming of the storm and have been since the glorious death of our musical saviors.
who cares they burned their money. Look at all the hollywood stars and modern age celebritues.
They buy $10,000,000 houses in Bell Air and rappers buy 10 $300,000 sports cars. Are those any better? Where are you now, telling them they should sell there shitty beach house and give everything to the poor kids in africa... thought so...
KLF at least were honest with it and their action started debate, so it's better to burn it than to buy luxury items the world can do without
blah blah blah blah.... KLF WERE FANTASTIC MUSICIANS WHO DECIDED TO HAVE A LAUGH WITH NOT ONLY THEIR MUSIC BUT WITH THE INDUSTRY ITSELF, SAME GOES FOR THEIR ARTSTIC EFFORTS . THOSE WHO CRITISIZE NEED TO LIGHTEN UP, GET THEIR HEADS OUT OF THIER ARSES AND SEE THE BIGGER PICTURE. GO AND DISCOVER REALITY; MAKE STUFF, DO NICE THINGS, SEE THE WORLD BEYOND FASHION MAGS AND MONEY - DISCOVER WHAT HAPPINESS TRULY IS BECAUSE YOU SERIOUSLY NEED TO BROADEN THE HORIZONS OF YOUR SHITTY LIVES.
The pair of them craved popularity and success and they got it by any means...They worked the media as well as the public with catchy tunes! They were and still are so full of shit they should be art exhibits themselves. I take my hat off to them both...
Brilliant is the best way to describe their career.
To the people who say "but they only had a few successful singles", whatever. Piss off! Pay attention, and you'll see who decides on what's a "hit". 13 yr olds who see the latest video on MTV. What KLF accomplished in less than a decade cannot compare to anybody's career in the last 30, 40, 50 years....or possibly ever.
If they want to burn 1m quid, then good for them. They earned it, so they're entitled to do whatever they choose.

I hope those cunts get straped in a chair and forced to watch vid's of starving kids in Africa with fly's all around their faces, That million quid could have bought a load of fly squishers.!!!!

Everybody is missing the point. They talk about how important art is and I've seen all kinds of reasons posted here about why they did it. That's not important. Do you know how many homeless people out there could have been helped with that money? Or how it could have helped in so many other ways? I liked their music a little but, they are idiots! I don't see how this is art. They're standing there throwing money into a fire. I think it's all a desperate cry for attention. Not very intelligent.
it picks a hole in conventional capitalist ideology. if the individual is expected to support themselves by making their own money through work, then once they have their money they can do what they like with it. if people are suffering under a political ideal (and need to ask for the KLF's money) then that ideology is flawed. you're right, but the KLF are not the ones to blame.
But, I thought that this was a statement of art not a political statement. It seems to me that KLF was trying to prove that they are not going to be a product of society. Well, when they made their music and accepted money for it (from you and I) they became a product our society. I'm a capitolist. My point was the moral implication that it has. You say they're not at fault. I beg to differ. If they are against the institution, they should've declined money and did it for free.
whether KLF even meant to provoke the reaction they did, or if they are idiots or not is beside the point. the burning of one million pounds provokes valuable political and existential discussion.
I find it hysterical that people can criticise the KLF for burning a million quid and yet think nothing of the multimillionaire flash wankers on MTV cribs,,,why is the question never levelled at those with private jets, third mansions or five cars?
Watching this, I'm reminded of how traditional Chinese burn 'hell money' regularly, as offerings to close ones gone on to the afterlife before them.
Such 'underworld currency' is akin to toy money, all good replicas of the real stuff.
'Mobile phones' and 'tablets' are most recently available at incense shops near you.
Real money, burnable offerings, but similarly paper.
Willing self-deception everywhere makes the difference possible.

How much did they make anyway? These days most artists don't make that kind of money.
yousurfer2 2 years ago 2
Dumb Fucks. They think they are being rebels but are just demonstrating being dumb and lacking in imagination.
How sad when they sweep all the remains into a bag and try to get it valued. You can tell they regret it even in this video, i bet they totally regret it now. Im sure all their friends do when they are drunk and talk about it like anyone gives a shit (yeah shut the fuck up moron, we know you burned a load of money' pffft what a bunch of dumbarses)

it was real money ...they made a LOT more after doing that....they became a massive act around the world, kicked off scenes of acid house and generally made some pretty good music,....then the charts got a hold on em.but ye, think about it ...burning a million then was a massive amount comapred to today ...it was basically an advertising budget for a band, theychise to burn it and made many times its sum after ...proably the best marketing ploy/staement of the 90's .
bar none.

We are the Children of MU. We are righteous.
WE ARE THE FUTURE!

KLF = Genius
who cares they burned their money.

Not very intelligent.
pices1970 3 years ago
By the way, were any of you aware that they went broke shortly after this? Real smart KLF.
pices1970 3 years ago
it picks a hole in conventional capitalist ideology. if the individual is expected to support themselves by making their own money through work, then once they have their money they can do what they like with it. if people are suffering under a political ideal (and need to ask for the KLF's money) then that ideology is flawed. you're right, but the KLF are not the ones to blame.
Wannop 3 years ago 6
But, I thought that this was a statement of art not a political statement. It seems to me that KLF was trying to prove that they are not going to be a product of society. Well, when they made their music and accepted money for it (from you and I) they became a product our society. I'm a capitolist. My point was the moral implication that it has. You say they're not at fault. I beg to differ. If they are against the institution, they should've declined money and did it for free.
pices1970 3 years ago
did what for free?
made the music?
that's not what we're discussing.
whether KLF even meant to provoke the reaction they did, or if they are idiots or not is beside the point. the burning of one million pounds provokes valuable political and existential discussion.
